I have Sisterlocks ( 7 1/2 years). I started with 3 inches of hair. It cost 500.00. I went to a consultant for the first 6 months. It would take 4 1/2 hours to retighten, and it would cost me 100.00. I went every 5 weeks. After that, I learned how to retighten it myself. I use a yarn needle. I’ve been doing it myself for 7 years.

God I love how the low ponytail looks!!!!

I would say to add that for braidlocs, that while it can look like traditional locks it can also look like sisterlocks if started small enough. Also if you start two strand twists small enough they can also look like sisterlocks.

I have Sisterlocks. You are charged based upon how much hair you have in inches and how dense it is. My installation was 1200 I had 9 inches. My retwist were 80 now they are 100 and I get them every 7 weeks. I’m about to start self maintaining them in 2019.

I ask because you’re not supposed to be charged on your installation based on how dense your hair is you’re supposed to be charged off of length because you can control length

Dev Coco yes, she is on the website. She is a certified and works in a shop. She did not charge me extra for my density, but said if the hair was exceptionally thick she would.

Dee N I’ve seen some people comb them out. With my hair texture I’m pretty sure that will be impossible for me.

I interlock my own sisterlocs. Don't be discouraged... you don't have to get a "professional". I also did my mom's. Again not a professional... I'm just really good at what I do.

My stylist charged me $100 to start my locs. 40-60 to retwist. She has been doing my hair for years and is versatile 💜

I have starter locs and i love the semi freeform look. I use oil and water to moisturize them and edge control every now and then when I’m looking for a more polished look. I’m almost 3 months in but I’m loving this journey already.

I’ve been interlocking for years but the palm roll is better if you want the smooth texture locs and no bumps going down the loc from braiding the root from interlocking. I can’t stand it 😢

I started mine 6 months ago with 2 strand twist. And they are pretty much locked. I went from interlocking to palm rolling and they seem to be doing well. I love your video hun and you locks are loc goals...thanks for the vid

Kendreka Bell I’m about to start my locs via two strand on my 8 year natural anniversary. Did u do them yourself or have someone else do them? I’m nervous about having the parts all over the place.

Another method of re-twisting is crocheting the locs which is basically using a crochet needle to tangle the locs together. It’s a good method to use if you have a lot of difficulty getting your hair to loc like I did, though it can be very painful if it gets too close to the roots😣

Cool video! I had my hair traditionally locd by a loctician and never went back. After a few years of experimenting maintenance techniques interlocked, twisted/palm roll, and lastly where I am now....just Separating.

I'm on my 6th or 7th set of locs & have entertained free-forming once I get past the starter stage, but I'm apprehensive about them turning flat like I've noticed in mostly all free-formed locs I've seen. Also, with my last set, I had to go 3 or 4 mos. without retwisting cuz I couldn't afford it, & by the time I did get a retwist, it was hard to get my new growth to lock, which I believed caused some thinking or inconsistency in uniform size of each individual loc later down the line.

So, was undecided on locs. Saw your video, and, I’m doing it. You are a beauty.

My mother has I guess semi freeform locs that are down to her butt and my dad used to have locs to him mid back as a teenager and I'm going to start my locs asap because they're just so pretty 🤷‍♀️

micro braidlocs are a cheaper dubb for sister locs and maintained via interlocking. I highly recommend it to anyone that wants the look of sisterlocs but prefer to do it themselves and save money

If you think about how long installation can take 12-20 hours mine was 30 hours because of how long my hair was 8inches

An alternative would be micro braidlocs, micro two strands twists and micro interlocks. You can find videos on all methods on here. I have had braidlocs twice, that I've done myself. Now I'm sporting interlocks that really look like sisterlocks. Also done by me.

When I think of getting locks. I think of something like your length and size. I really like your color and length. Girl this is gonna be a journey for me. I'm really tryna keep the faith, and I have not even started yet.

I had traditional locs for thirteen years. I loved it. I retwisted myself but went to a loctician for color and styling. She actually did a ambry , dark to blonde. And it was awesome. Had to cut my locs because an autoimmune disorder started making my hair fall out. Hopefully some day I'll lock it again.

Hi. Was the disorder in underactive thyroid? I'm asking as I have the condition and have just started locs......2 weeks in today.

I started my traditional locs with the 2 strand twist method....

I started with traditional comb coils and maintained with palmrolling. But for the last two years I've switched to interlocking.

Nice video. I have sisterlocks. Love them because of their versatility. You can start sisterlocks with permed hair. You just have to have 1-1/2 -2 inches of new growth. As your hair grows permed ends can be gradually cut off.

2:09 I guess there's a large range in prices. I've heard of people paying $1000-$1500+ for sister locs installations.

If someone is only charging any less than $700, I doubt they're certified. For the time, it's worth the money. Mine took about 22 hours over 2 days.

My sons started with coils, and we went to tst method as it got longer. I will start with interlocking in diamonds when I loc, and will twist once they bud. Such a great video to discuss the variations. A good video would be discussing which parting option is best for various textures and density of hair

Can we stop calling them dreads? Sister Locs, Interlocs, Traditional Locs, anything but Dread Locs. Our hair is not dreadful. Our hair does not cause great fear or extreme apprehension or a reluctance to experience. Either our hair is dreadful or its beautiful. I prefer the latter.

Dreadlocks is a term Jamaican call it, that’s the name 🤣. Most people don’t even know the history of it and the name origins, u think the Europeans called it dreadful 😒. Sigh*

I have braid locs for 5 years now and continue it with new growth I only retwist every 2-3 months my guy I do his they are traditional and they look the same no specific pattern but I hate people touchin my locs

New subscriber! I am a semi-freeformer. I never re-twist. But I separate my locs. I let a few combine, but for the most part, I separate and I have a little Afro at the roots of my locs.

My goodness your skin is just flawless and GLOWING❤❤😩 love your locs as well phew🔥❤ but rt I'm having a bit of trouble even identifying my hair type and I've had my locs for just over 3 years. My hair grows fast af and sometimes feels unruly. Being a truck driver weather conditions will absolutely mess with my scalp and it's a nightmare to deal with. If it helps I'm black-Filipino. Overall hair feels like wild/unidentified curls and overall soft when conditioned/washed. I do no other method besides retwist now because crocheting loose hairs has NOT worked. It has given me this kind of natural spiral texture that gives each loc it's own identity and I love that about it. Just wish it wasn't as frizzy as it is but I've grown pretty comfortable with it overall. I call them a perfect freedom lls

Thank you beautiful queen this was very informative. I've been stressing because I started with braids because my type of hair just wouldn't stay twisted because it's just way too soft. It's grown a lot and everything between the braid and my scalp is completely locked and most of the braids have come loose and some have started to lock naturally but the tighter braids still look braided in some spots but it's really frizzy. What can I do to get it to look more like locks? I'm Cherokee Indian if that helps give you an idea of the type of texture it is. I’ve had Sisterlocs for 11 years. I started with permed ends but you need at least 2 inches of natural hair to start. Also the permed hair never locs. Eventually you just cut it off when you are ready. I waited until my Locs had grown out a good bit first so I missed the “Big Chop” shock experience 😅.

Can you allow your hair to loc up, or can you start locs from a two strand twist state or should we take the twists down and loc the hair from there?

The roots, specifically, need to be moisturized because anything you put on your dreads stays there because of the matting. Very nice vid.

I just started my loc journey yesterday (1/12/19). My hair was already long so I skipped the little coils but I do have these skinny stiff locs all going to the back. I have a fade on both sides so I’ll only have locs in the top middle and back middle of my head. ( like a mohawk) so how long will it take for them to get thick and actually move around? 🤗🤗

My locs are still forming but I just spritz water on them too make them damp, and then I pour a bit of oil into my hands and run them through my hair

I have interloc. Between my 4 week retwist I notice loose pieces of hair in-between the locs particularly in the back of my head. What is going on with my hair? I've had my locs for 3 years now

I’m doing my own. I’m a stylist with a naptural hair bent.

Started mine with braids back in late 2013 :D And I still have them on the tips. I know I should probably cut them off but it's kind of sentimental at this point, y'know? Like, 'this is what got me started... Now look where I am' kinda feeling. My hair grows fast so when I started mine, my hair was mid back. My sister braided me up and the rest was history. If there's one thing I wish I could control/change is that I wish my new growth would grow INTO the dang loc and stop going everywhere else! lol Currently, my length is at my posterior and growing, I think I may be forced to start snipping pretty soon since I don't want it -Rapunzel long- lol

We needed to see more and longer pictures of what you were talking about-and especially your own hair!You grew locs for 11 years and we didnt get to see them. It was frustrating.

Locs can be startled with two-strand twists also or finger twister.

Thank you for this video it’s very informative but I jus wanted to share another method to staring dreads . My husband jus locked my hair3 months ago an he used the Bantu knots an an kept them tied dwn .when ever I had to go out I’d leave the knots in an wear kinky curly clip ins they would hide the knots, if they come out jus retest .Also doing the knots were good because I didn’t have to use clips which could b uncomfortable
