Different Pop Up For Beginner To Intermediate Surfers | Common Pop Up Techniques | Pop Up Cheat

Спорт

There are many different ways to pop up these days. Some are good for beginners, some for intermediate and others for advanced surfers. The pop up that best suits you will be determined by the board you ride and how flexible and strong you are. There are some techniques that are bad and some are good, and then there are others that work only on big boards and some that work on all size boards. Have a look here to see which one would suit you and have a look at some of the common errors too.

    This is HANDS DOWN the best explanation of this on KZread. First video to show how your back foot lands or the technique with the knees onto back foot the pro's use. Some other bloke somewhere adds on some good info that would add onto this. He says where you place your knees when laying down, your back foot will land on. If anyone has the link to this one as well.

    Thanks for the video, it’s given me some food for thought, for having been surfing for 40years, the pop-up is what still gets me. These days even more so as I experience pain in manoeuvrability. All I know is that I need to get up quickly before I start getting too low into the trough. Repositioning knees etc can sometimes be too time consuming. I try to observe really good surfers who make the pop-up look effortless and consider their move to be more of swinging the board to underneath them instead of getting up onto it. After 40 years, I’m still working at this and ultimately need to spend more time on the grass to develop that technique. Cheers bro! I appreciate your insight

    Thanks for the feedback. Yes it’s a lot better if you can pop up quickly and you should try do as much as you can to practice and prepare for that. But if you’re struggling with pain or maneuverability then maybe you could get a board with slightly more volume to catch the wave sooner to give you time to stand up or you can practice the cheat 😅😊

    Here's another variation that I've recently come across - move into cobra with feet up, then drag your feet underneath your body. It feels different to the more explosive versions and works well for me even though I'm not particularaly fit. Cheers!

    Try in a standing position, bringing your back foot up as fast as you can into tail pad position..Then rotate your foot in the standing position, see how fast you can get your foot up into the tail pad position, you will see how faster and accurate it is..If you rotate your foot a few paddles before pop up it's a lot faster and smoother, hip is also rotated as your foot is already in the tail pad position before you walk up the board...

    I have been doing the chicken wing ever since I started at surf school. But now having a shorter board I've been feeling the need to have a faster pop up to avoid nosediving or going over the falls. I'm starting to do the explosive pop up with my board on the bed and slowly getting the hang of it, but I'll definitely have to get back to calisthenics because 3 or 4 pop ups like these fatigue me right away.

    Good that you’ve been trying to do the more explosive pop up. It’s the best. You could also do the slower version where you place your back foot down but without the knee dragging through the water (like the chicken wing). Good luck 🙏😊

    If you watch pro surfers in slow motion (there’s videos out there) they are all basically going back foot, then front foot while lunging into a sprinter position. 100% of them do this. Some may start by popping off their knees , hey theyre all super fit and flexible. But the end result is , arse goes up , back foot lands or plants, front foot comes through and plants between hands. Stable as. Then up and pump. There is variations obviously and the movement will speed up or down depending on takeoff difficulty, but in essence they’re the same. If you’re getting older and can’t initiate the pop from the knees anymore then slow it down a fraction and walk up using the back foot on trackpad. Remember slow is smooth, smooth is fast. It’s pretty rare to see a good surfer, pro or local legend, do anything different from this.

    problem with front foot first is that you can't speed pump until you get your back foot onto pad. your knee ends up in front of pad on the rail which causes knee dents. it really only works for steep or hollow waves (especially if u r pig dogging) and just builds bad habits.

  • @shannonainsliesurf

    @shannonainsliesurf

    Yes this is true. It works mostly with backside barrel riding. Some people have the technique down and can be on both feet quickly with this technique, but it is very very rare!!

    I've got short, stocky arms and it's difficult to keep my hands on the board until after my feet land on a pop up. Is it ok to have a split second moment where no hands or feet are on the board, or is it critical to have the feet land before lifting my hands?

  • @shannonainsliesurf

    @shannonainsliesurf

    That is a great question. Maybe you should practice a few scenarios on the floor of your living room and see which is the best. You might be able to take one off but I would say it is crucial to at least keep one hand on. You could also send me a video of your pop up for me to check

  • @mtnrabi

    Great video, going through on all the methods. I went and practiced both on land and in the water. While on land I manage to do then “standard pop up”, I find it more difficult in the water on my board (just moved from a 7’ soft to a 6’4 fiberglass). I think I don’t use my knees like I should on the board like I’m doing on land. I’ll keep practicing. Do you know anyone who use knee pads when surfing? I feel like that could really help me.

  • @shannonainsliesurf

    @shannonainsliesurf

    Hi Matan. Thanks for the feedback. Moving from a 7ft to a 6’4 will make a difference with the pop up if you don’t use the knees. I don’t know anyone using knee pads. Usually the wetsuit knee pads are thick enough to help, but maybe you should buy some and use them just to learn the technique.
