Hinduism in Indonesia is different from India, not just Balinese Hinduism, but Javanese Hinduism, Tengger Hinduism (Mount Bromo), Sundanese Hinduism, Kei Hinduism (Maluku), Aluk Tadolo Hinduism (Toraja, South Sulawesi), and Kaharingan Hinduism (Dayak, Kalimantan/ Borneo). Ancient Indonesian local beliefs before Hinduism came, many worshiped an omnipotent entity, One Creator, many referred to as Hyang. When Hinduism entered, ancient Indonesians saw that all the gods including the Trimurti were part of one divine emanation, namely from Sang Hyang Widhi. Indonesians are Hindus when they worship, they call it "Sembahyang" from the words "Sembah" means worship, and "Hyang" means the Creator. If you go to Central Java, you can visit the Dieng Temple on the Dieng Plateau. There you can see the Trimurti temples and traces of early Hinduism in Java. The word "Dieng" actually comes from the word "Dihyang/Di Hyang" which means the place of the Creator or the place of the Gods. The book Sanghyang Siksa Kanda Karesian from the 15th-16th century from the Sunda Kingdom (the last Hindu Kingdom in West Java) contains Hindu teachings and a mixture of Karuhun (local Sundanese) beliefs. What is interesting is that there are words as follows: "Kawula bakti di Mangkubumi, Mangkubumi bakti di Raja, Raja bakti di Dewata, Dewata bakti di Hyang" This means that the people must obey the Mangkubumi (local officials), the Mangkubumi must be devoted to their king, the king must be devoted to the Gods, the Gods are devoted to Hyang, the Source of Divine Light. So Hinduism in Indonesia is instead like Indian Hinduism which looks polytheistic, Indonesian Hinduism is more directed towards pantheism, everything in this universe, both real and unseen, is all from the emanation of the same light, from the same source, namely Sang Hyang Widhi/Sang Hyang. It's important to know why Balinese Hindus don't have Trimurti statues in their temples, because both Balinese Hinduism now and other Hinduism in Indonesia are a form of change that occurred in the 15th-17th centuries, where on the one hand, Islamization was getting stronger, making many Hindus unable to build temples for Trimurti again and forced to worship modestly like in jungle/forest, mountains, sea, rivers, and built simple places of worship is not as complicated as building temples, such as punden terraces (tiered terraces arranged with stones) which are usually found in the mountains. Apart from that, many local Hindus continue to worship in former temples which have been damaged due to Islamization, making it impossible for them to build more temples, especially since many temples have been converted into mosques and Muslim tombs/ cemetery. . Apart from that, in the 15th-16th century, when the Majapahit Empire was declining, there was a trend of strengthening local religion/native beliefs, thus influencing Hindu worship practices, which previously liked to build large temples and lots of statues of gods, became syncretistic with local beliefs and chose to build temples or places of worship. Hinduism is strong with megalithic culture, such as Balinese temples which are strongly influenced by Punden Berundak, an ancient local Indonesian place of worship.

In India's Hindu temples, you can wear any dress, Balinese, Western, Indian etc. It should just look modest, that's it. And you are allowed to enter. Bali Hindu temples have more strict rules. This is new for me and many other Indians. So don't get irked, this is normal. If he knew before I'm sure he would have worn full Balinese dress before entering.

@@rishabhrox1 well, i mean... like you said, if he know that, he can prepare himself better. If he did not know that before (as you can see here), is it good to claim that they are discriminating him? They are NOT discriminating him, he is just not well-prepared, but why did he make that conclusion instead of find out why he is not allowed? I believe they will explain it if you ask nicely. Also... no matter what your (or his) religion is, It is still their sacred place, they are the one who make the rules, and you have to respect that rule. Sorry but being Hindu foreigner doesnt make you special in Bali and doesnt make you any different from other random tourist. If being Hindu were a sole requirement to enter the sacred place, other random tourist can make fake claim that they are Hindu in order to join the ceremony/procession, and may unconciously disturb the place because they have no sense of belongings. So please learn their rules before accusing something as "discrimination" ... the word is a bit too strong for this situation.

@@fitriaahsani1286 Yes, you are right. But the tourist was also a bit nervous, maybe he felt ashamed so he could not ask more clarification. These things are normal when you look from tourist's perspective. This tourist was not arrogant, he just misunderstood and shared his feelings. When you are alone in a foreign country and this kind of a situation happens, you get very nervous and scared. Also, nobody is asking for special treatment, but definitely if a Hindu person is coming to Bali (from India or Nepal or Ghana or wherever else Hinduism exists), they have a special feeling in their heart for Bali. They come not just to enjoy Bali's outer beauty but also see how their Hindu brotherhood and spirituality looks like in another country. It is sad if Balinese fail to see this and reciprocate this warmth and feeling of community-spirit. This man came to Bali not just to show beautiful beaches and temples but to show how Bali's Hinduism to Indians (many of whom are unaware that Hinduism exists natively outside India and Nepal), forgive his mistake. You can see in the rest of the video he is very friendly with Balinese locals. So don't misunderstand his intention.

I am very disappointed in the Hinduphobic comments made by my country's brothers and sisters here against India for no reason. As a Balinese, I ask for forgiveness and pray to Sang Hyang Widhi for them to get better knowledge about India before speaking against them just based on what the news channels here tell us. I have been to India, particularly Delhi and Vrindavan (the birthplace of Dewa Krisna), and it was a beautiful experience for me to see the places where Hinduism originally flourished. Yes, Balinese way of Hindu worship is different because our cultural roots lie in Kapitayan, an ancient religion in which we only prayed to one god and had only symbolic figures and nature worship, no sculptures or idols. But when we hear the Puja TriSandhya (which actually consists of the Gayatri Mantra, Indians must remember it), we still feel connected to our Trimurti (Brahma, Wisnu and Mahesa) and all their companions who uphold our Agama Hindu culture and belief. More power to Hindu unity across the world. Om Swastiastu.

@@ankushyadav6814 Sorry, but this one thing that I don't like about Indian culture is that you guys don't have faith in your own way of life. Yes, Hinduism in India has many forms but that does not mean Hinduism of India is not true. It is very true. As a Balinese, I saw many wonderful things in India's Hindu culture, right from the architecture of temples, to the bajan and kreetan music (I hope I said it correct), it is all so beautiful and it made me realize that Bali is so lucky to have its association with such a beautiful religion and country. But seeing Indians discrediting their own selves gives me sadness, how can Hinduism be respected when its native followers don't have faith in themselves? Bali's Hinduism is different, and our way of worship is influenced by Tirta, Kapitayan, and Kejawen, among many other indigenous faiths that existed before Hinduism came to Indonesia. So you would find many different things in Bali's Hindu culture, but ultimately, when we perform the TriSandhya, you will find our connection with India too because we sing 'Om Bur Buwaswaha' just like you.

Balinese Hindus do not use statues of gods when worshiping, but use a type of shrine (without statues of gods) as a symbol of the place where god reside, it is called Palinggih (balinese) literally means "God's Seat" or Devasthanam (Sanskrit/Tamil) which literally means God's Place In Bali there are many Brahma Temples, Wisnu (Vishnu)Temples and Siwa (Shiva) Temples but you will not find statues of Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva inside, you will only see and pray facing the symbol where the god resides. There are several statues installed in the Balinese Hindu temple but they are not for worshipping, only for temple ornamentation. Additional information: Temples in bali are not only 200, but more than 1000 i think, that's why people call Bali as island of thousands temples. Java Island also has many hindu temples

As Hindu-Buddhist (Sanatan) was the dominating faith here in ancient Indonesia, the whole of the archipelago starting from Sumatra-Java-Bali were all Sanatani for from early 4th century AD till 15 century AD, till Islamization came (introduced by Gujarati traders) , and only Bali remains.

Please don’t spread misinformation, there’s no discrimination, but of course you need to follow the rules. Locals take temple visit very seriously, everyone work together on the preparations prior to the visit. Everyone needs to wear the proper temple attire, bring offering, etc. Furthermore this is, after all, the Mother Temple, so it deserves due respect. As you can see, even the family shrine is gated so it’s not just a place you can go in as you please. There’s a certain reverence one must observe in visiting the temple, and as a tourist who doesn’t understand (and doesn’t want to understand) you’d only be a nuisance to devotees.

He didn't spread misinformation. The temple authorities behaved with rudeness to him also. The tourist is at fault, but remember he is a foreigner. Plus, he comes from India, where dress code doesn't have to be Balinese (you only have to cover yourself up, even if it is western clothes and then you can enter temples). So his culture is different (not wrong, just different) from Bali. The temple authorities should have told him to wear headgear and all, and also told him that camera is not allowed inside. Because in Indian Hindu temples we have freedom to wear what we want (as long as our body is covered up) and we can also carry cameras (though once we are in the presence of our god's idols we keep them back in our pockets or close them).

BALI is beautiful and you have covered it nicely ! Some more interesting inputs for all to know! If you compare Balinese Hinduism ( South East Asian Hinduism mainly) with * NORTH INDIAN Hinduism then yes it is in many ways different. Hinduism /Buddhism ( Sanatani) spread to South East Asia from * EASTERN AND SOUTHERN INDIA and has a lot similarity with those parts. ** like almost all old traditional Village Hindu homes in Bengal have a family temple inside their house compound called Kula Devata, just like what you saw in Bali ! In India also Hinduism is multi cultural and multi dimensional . The North / West Indian, South Indian and Eastern Indian / Nepalese Hindu rituals and temple architecture is very different from each other. Naturally when Hindu culture spread to Indonesia in ancient times , it evolved with its own style of architecture of temples. Also like to point out not all Hindus are Vegetarians in India ! In fact all Hindus of Eastern India like Orissa, Bengal, Assam , Manipur and Nepal and even Kerala are predominantly Non Vegetarians ! I also feel that they are not discriminative to you but they just dont want to encourage funny tourists to enter their pure temple and destroy the peace, considering Bali gets lot of international tourists. They can not make an exception for Indian Hindus because they really cant prove that all Indian visitors are Hindus !

However, in Bali the cropping season is different, so this harvest festival does not have significance here. In any case, Rama is just a human character for them, not God. There is only one prayer here, Gayatri Mantra, no aartis for other gods and nothing else.

Yes sadly that Indonesia is changing. Many are still tolerant, but on the other side there are so many muslim fanatics now in Indonesian and they are wanting Indonesia to become a 100% Islamic country. Many of them today also use social media accounts and create hoax, propaganda and fake info about India and minorities in their own country. They will make a small minority problem and make into a large majority problem. They always show the negatives about India and try to brainwash their people, they will mock and bully other cultures, religions and traditions in Indonesia. They will repost a video thats located in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal etc. And say this is all in India, but its not. Also those people care more about Arabic countries more then their own country. The traditional Javanese culture is declining and becoming more Arabic

It is so much like Assam. Most of Assamese are non vegetarian, even the priests. In Assam Hindus don't consume cow meat but they consume buffalo meat(though a small population). Also in Nepal, though a Hindu country they consume Buff( I am not sure about it being cow or buffalo meat). Also being mangolian and low tolerance to milk, milk consumption in northeast is less.

not very sure how u are comparing India and Indonesia, India has faced masscre, r pe and conversion under Muslim rulers. It had to give up on a large portion of its land after being divided on the basis of religion. Its culture was severely destroyed. Despite this, it chose to stay secular yet some citizens of one so called 'minority' fails to respect the country, other citizens and has a so called idea to make the country Islamic. Has Indonesia faced any of this sort? (Genuinely asking beacuse I'm unaware of Indonesian history)

It's like Sunnis not treating Ahmediyas well, how is it related to Hinduism? 2) Just like u swept away with saying that terrorists are not Islam/Muslims as per ur convenience while they all do come from one religion, why can't Hindus get away but saying that even the caste system isn't written in the Vedas. It's just a mistranslation. The Varna system is different from the caste system. 3)What was given to Hindus to compensate for their loss? India has a lot of reservations from the past 75 years for those who were oppressed.

Indian Hindu is very diverse. Hindu in India is not everywhere the same. For example North Indian Hinduism is also different from South Indian Hinduism. Nepal Hinduism, Sri Lankan Hinduism, Balinese Hinduism etc. are all different, but still 1 Hindu. They differ in culture, way of life, traditions etc. However, the teachings of the Vedas, the Bhagavad Gita and the teachings of Dharma are the same. The teachings of Hinduisme or Dharma is not a one-way philosophy, Hinduism is universal, flexible and Hinduism is actually not a religion but a way of life". Dharma = "Way of Life". The original name for Hindu is not Hindu, but Sanatana Dharma The concept of Brahman (God) is the same.

No rules or law in Indonesia that forbid other people visiting other religions praying places. If there is then is just local rules, not by govt rules or law, and govt can and definitely will remove that local rules if there are people complaints And every provinces in Indonesia has their own traditional languages but we using national language (bahasa Indonesia), to communicate each others. The people of Bali are beautiful. So welcoming and kind. Indonesia is a country I have a lot of respect for the way they value their heritage and culture. Many Muslim nations wish to think of their history only from the time they converted to the new faith. They destroy their past and preserve only what matches with their belief. Indonesia is the only country that makes an exception to this.
