DIFFERENCES BETWEEN TRADITIONAL RP AND MODERN RP: Perception & Sounds | Standard Southern British

This is the first video on the differences between TRADITIONAL RP and MODERN RP. The former is also known as HEIGHTENED RP and the latter as GENERAL BRITISH or STANDARD SOUTHERN BRITISH. Today we’ll be talking about how we perceive accents on a social level and how some individual sounds differ between these two accents. Next week we’ll look at elements of connected speech and intonation

    Another great video! I admire the amount of work/research you put in your videos, and I love it when you throw in a personal detail, view or experience. As for how you sound, I wouldn't worry if I were you. Nobody likes listening or watching themselves back. What attracted me to your channel was, besides your expertise, your accent, diction and pronunciation. You don't sound (or look!) cold or unfriendly at all. Quite the contrary :)

    1. Oh, Sam, it is literally impossible for you to be seen as a posh guy. You know very well that we perceive a person through their manner of being, non-verbal language and gestures, not just through the way they speak. And I see you as a friendly, kind, life-affirming person. As a foreigner, I don't care about accents that much and I don't judge people that way. Your videos, so clear and well delivered, teach me a lot and that is all that matters. 2. In Poland, we lost a lot of local accents after WWII (borders changed, people migrated and mixed, villagers were ashamed of their culture, communist victimised intelligentsia). Now, only some parts of Poland preserve their specific accents (mountains, Silesia, east wall). Normally, I can't say - only by their accent - if someone is rich, poor, well educated or not. Of course, there are other ways to asses. And young people use slang a lot and I know I'm old when I don't catch what they are talking about. It's more important than accent. 3. I can't hear the difference between ea-ee sounds in the video.😢 It is all so subtle for me... Thank you a lot.😘

    1.That's a wonderful comment to read, thanks! 🤩😍 And it's great to know people see my videos and me like that, thanks! 😊 2.I see! And that's a good point: slang is also an important part of how languages evolve 3. Don't worry at all: it is subtle indeed and I probably don't do the diphthong as accurately as I should because I only ever do the modern /ee/, so just keep doing that and forget I've ever even mentioned the diphthong 😜

    Thanks for this video. I have been learning English with a kind of RP pronunciation, given that I have payed attention to the phonetic symbols given in diccionaries like Oxford and Cambridge. I was worried about the fact that I could sound rather cold and pretentious. On the other hand, however, I like the way RP speakers, modern and traditional, speak and I would like to continue perfecting this accent because, to be honest, I feel much more comfortable with this accent than the other ones, and besides, I don't want to mix accents, for fear my English could end up sounding of low quality in the long run. As you can see, I have a kind of bittersweet perception about the accent I am learning. Thanks for expressing how you perceive your own accent, because when I pay attention to mine I feel kind of discouraged by the kind of emotionless style I have, despite the fact that many people people have told me that my English sounds quite well, including some teachers. By the way, some of these last ones told me that I sometimes sound like someone working for the BBC 😂. I really hope your channel becomes a success and I would be grateful if you could make more videos about RP with advice about how to make it sound more friendly.

  • @EnglogicSam

    @EnglogicSam

    3 ай бұрын

    I completely understand how you feel, Juan! First of all, you are doing the right thing not mixing accents. You need to learn and speak the accent that YOU like. The more RP you sound, the more foreigners will perceive you as snooty, that's inevitable and you can't do much about it. You will also find those who will admire the level you've reached: you can't please everyone. Native speakers will probably make a mental note of it but won't give it any thought. Over the years (and I'm still learning to think like that) I've realised that it's perfectly normal for people to make assumptions based on the way I speak, but then if they don't try to go past it and get to know me, it's their problem, not mine. Pure traditional RP doesn't sound friendly and we just need to accept it. Modern RP, on the other hand, can to a certain extent. If you watch interviews with Jonathan Bailey, as much as I love him, he doesn't sound friendly in most of them, also depending on the context and setting of the interview, because his accent tends to be on the colder side. I know mine is not much of an answer but this is a good idea for a potential video for me to look into, so I'll keep you posted 😉

    Very good video. Thanks for it. I asked you this because there are a lot of books about RP or general American English, but there's nothing (at least I don't know literature about) related to modern RP. And talking about connected speech... I asked you how you pronounced "my eyes" or similar combinations... I watched your video about it (through the link you shared) and I could see that you used jod sound /j/ in those cases. I use the same sound, but I asked because sometimes I've heard pronunciations like:"I saw a horse outside" /ai sɔr ən ɔːs aʊtsaid/ I know there are a lot of pronunciations like this which are not following the traditional model or kind of rule ( I mean rule... general or typical uses). So I thank you again. I hope you can give us more information about certain things of modern RP. 👌🧐

  • @EnglogicSam

    @EnglogicSam

    I see what you mean about that sentence. Now you know why we put /r/ between SAW and A 💪 the reason why some people say AN before HORSE is that in regional accents H is often dropped (don't do this in English exams or, well, EVER 😜) so if you drop the H, you need to use AN because the article is now before a vowel 😊

    Very interesting! I'm a native speaker of Southern British English, but I've lived most of my life outside the UK. I'm a professional translator, so my main interest so far has been the written language. I've recently begun to teach English to my Brazilian niece, who needs to learn it to speak to her Austrian boyfriend. Our shared language is Italian, but I understand Portuguese, so we are using the three languages, as and when appropriate. For example, Brazilian PT, like English but unlike Italian, has both a clear and a dark L (Lisboa/Lisbon vs Brasil/Brazil). I've noticed that my personal English accent is very close to "modern RP", but with some traces of "traditional RP". I pronounce "foot", "put", "look", the old way, but "soul", "coal", mole", the new way. I also noticed that I pronounce "fool", "pool", "rule" with a U sound similar to Italian or PT, while the sound in "mood", "food" and "crude" is more "central". Thanks again for this input! PS. Best wishes for 2024!

    What a great video, Sam! Thanks I suppose that now the so called "posh" speakers are stigmatized, which is wrong. If they say that no one can be judged by the way they speak, then don't judge the ones who were lucky enough to be well-educated. You don't sound snobbish at all! It's neither an insult nor a compliment, just a fact. No offence intended. I imagine that you have heard a traditional, clipped RP accent and a more modern toned-down version of it. Your accent is nothing like either versions of it. Many, many speakers believe they have an RP accent, either traditional or modern, but like many contestants in singing competitions, what they hear in their head and what comes out of their mouth is very different! The problem with trying to imitate an RP accent is that people believe that by focusing on individual sounds, they will be able to imitate it. There is nothing further from the truth. Actors being taught RP look at individual sounds but gain proficiency and authenticity through intonation as well. Indeed, most acting coaches focus more on this than individual sounds. RP has a very unusual intonation pattern. As you say, there is nothing wrong with different accents and there is nothing wrong with yours!
