BMW Doctor .. Well I hope that doesn’t happen to my N55? It’s my wife’s 335i! Actually, so far so good on that engine. Just did the VCG @75,000. Other than that it’s been great.
This engine's a beast, I"ve got MILVs, headers, 3.64 diff, and BPC tune... Love it

Your description was really accurate. Thank you for sharing all these informations. However, you missed just two points when comparing different N52 generations: 1- the downgraded versions of N52 (US specs) not only lacking the 03 stage manifold & the two DISA valves but they are not equipped too with the heat exchanger attached to the oil filter housing for engine oil cooling. This engine version is mainly dedicated to the 328i models designated N52N. 2- Not all new generation N52 engines equipped with plastic valve cover are lacking the 03 stage manifold. I have an N52K that was installed on a 2009 130i car is equipped with both: the 03 stage manifold with 02 DISA valves and the heat exchanger on oil filter housing. It is noticeable that these two are inter-related: 03 stage Manifold---->more Power---->more Heat----->additional cooling for engine oil is added.

So I got lucky I guess, I got a silver cover from (March) 2006 on a 530 e61, I am led to believe than not having direct injection they are both more sturdy and potentially accepting lpg conversions?

My 2007 E92 325i N52K have the oil heat exchanger installed. Could it be that the N51 is lack of the heat exchanger. I live in Denmark and all N52’s I have seen here have the heat exchanger installed.

Now I feel like a change and found 55 plate 130 m sport with 57k miles. My question to you is what should I be looking for at this mileage if anything at all. What up, Dean! I got a N52B25 2.5 liters 218HP. My car has magnesium valve cover and intake manifold looks similar to yours with 2 disa valves. Is there any way to improve power in this engine without turbo, cutting the head or opening the velves? If I gain something like 30, 40 HP I'd be glad with my bimmer. Happy new year mate!

I saw a dude with n54 intakes secondary cat delete and a tune running 260hp to the crank. Have you done anything to it since?
I had bad bmws that made me hate them but I have a e90 now 2010 with n52 and sure love them again thanks for showing what's best and save people money

I'm happy with my N52K because in the UK, it's £255 a year cheaper in tax than a car with the old N52. With the money saved I could buy a new valve cover every year!

Come again, I just bought an old e61 with an n42 silver cover, how is it going to be 255GBP on top, tax on my x5 for a 3l is already 256/y? So I am going to pay 500 quid plus?
BMW Doctor Can you tell me what aftermarket push button start I can use on my 2006 530i auto. The ignition tumblr is locked and trying to bypass it because the key still gives the signal to unlock the steering wheel but the key won’t turn from the lock position. Or would a bmw push button assembly work on my stock harness

A 125i E82 is a detuned (valvetronic) 130i and therefor has the N52B30 with both disa valves. Mine makes 262HP and 322nm. Pretty nice figures for the 130i cab.

Your right about the N52 first Gen engine that it is one of the best engine. I want to ask you a question about the N51. Can I swap the N51 engine for a N52 engine and dress it back up with the parts from the N51 engine it is also a SULVE engine?

So what’s the entire story with the bearing ledge wear? Only high revs during cold operation? Or is it lack of oil maintenance and cheap oil/filters?
U right bro , however the n52 with the black cover has improvements to the head so the ticking stops , and not forgetting camshaft was also improved cause of the bearing. My neighbour has a 2006 323i from new and bmw changed his engine under motor plan because off the same issues. So far his on 240000km only the ccv was a problem which he got someone to repair and re use his vavle cover. I believe the later n52 is more reliable , i heard a 2005 330i n52 and it had a very bad ticking noise.

that means you didn't look after it mate my N52 is perfect and sorry to tell you the ones with the black valve cover STILL suffer the issue I deal in this engine enough and have 17k subs of N52 with that engine who still suffer the issue with the bearing ledges and ticking
So how can you tell the difference when car shopping on line is it all pre facelift or is the 1st gen on the face lifted versions too ?
As someone else has mentioned here. I have a 2007 E92 330i manual N52B30A with a black cover producing 272bhp. What about this engine?? I didn’t hear a mention of it in the vid

Yes the update takes away around 30bhp as it restricts your engine to lower the power as bmw made to much power from the start so the new update stops that and makes it more emission friendly

How can a different valve cover effect the power, I'm looking at an 07 325i with N52, 2.5 litre and its 218bhp. Black engine cover, so supposedly n52n or n52k? Unless the official figures are over estimating....
Honestly surprised there is no decent aftermarket solution for the N51-52 plastic valve cover. There is an aluminum one, but I would not trust it. Plastic valve cover for N51 is now about $500+ so pretty wild.
What would the possible cause be on my 2011 BMW 328i making it fill the intake with oil? Also, causing it to blow heavy smoke out of the tailpipe?
Hey i have a 328I 2007 with a N52N , I bought a 3 stage intake to upgrade and i was wondering do i need to change my valve cover so ccv is relocated under the intake
From my understanding the SULEV models here in the US have the three stage manifold but that it's not activated. I know they were sold mostly in California and I think a few other states due to emissions. I have an 09 328i 6spd manual with the sport package and premium package and love it. Its fast but I want to make it faster and plan on doing the three stage manifold and down pipe in the future along with a blue chrome vinyl wrap. My dream BMW is a 440i MSport though with the B58 in it. Great video and I almost had bought a black with brushed aluminum trim 07 330i 6spd manual but someone bought it before I could. That was the bimmer that got away.😔

Hello I have a question about the 3 stage intake manifold I have a n51 which I originally thought was a n52 then I noticed I had a 3 stage so now I’m wondering if I need a tune to use the disa valves ? Or since I already have the 3 stage intake do I need to tune it or is it already using the disa valves properly ( I have a 2008 328i (black head cover) n51 which I thought was a n52 at first but found out it’s a N51 due to the fact my 328i is a SULEV)

Hi, I’ve got an f10 with N52 3.0L with newer manifold. My engine block is busted and I have made my mind to replace the engine with a used n52. In GCC, N52 1st gen is abundantly available however my car came with newer gen in 2011. Need your advise if I should put 1st gen n52 in my F10 or should I stick to the newer gen n52

I'd go for a first en, especially because you go second hand, swapping the engine means you could potentially address timing chain in advance, but the direct high pressure injection is the potential problem, I prefer the old engine because I can upgrade it to dual full with lpg and drive it for the money of a Fiesta.
Any idea what's cause people to have idle issues after installing catless headers on their n51?
How about DME..is it same or different. Is it MSV 80 can use for both n52 silver and black?

Glad you made this video, I found a 128i with the N52n. I still want it because I’m in California and most here are the N51 SULEV motors. Can the N52n be “fixed” ? Short of the valve cover and a tuned 3stage intake (which is needed either way) it doesn’t seem much worse

N51 has a stage 3 intake already. It’s quite nice.
I know my 08 3.0si Z4 with the N52 and it has the 3 stage intake stock and is supposedly 265bhp.
I recently bought a touring 2006 with the n52 1st gen magnesium cover unbeknown to me as new to bmw.when my mechanic saw it he got very excited and proceeded to tell me about this engine and told me not to even think about selling it.and it’s only done 120k and I must admit what a engine it is absolutely love it.

I have an n52 with 2007 black rocker cover . . Tappets are noisey . I have no faults in engine tried all your tricks just wondering with out faults is the oil pressure ok like would u get vanos faults if ledges were gone
I have the N52B30 in the 2007 E92 330i. Now with almost 150k km. Not a single problem with this engine, still on its first water pump, touch wood. I do only 8k km a year though. As we know, indirect injection with no carbon buildup, no HPFP, no turbo failure (normally aspirated) , no overheating. Only one year production run for this N52 in the E92 with 272hp. Then followed by the N53 direct injection also with 272hp. I like to think of it as a bit of a unicorn :-).

I have the exact same car Nexus. Apr 2007 build E92 330i with the N52B30A (black valve cover) sitting with 89k and not 1 engine fault in 3 years ownership.

I found online it's 243 hp My old engine was 525 ... 218 hp ... the new engine is so much powerful now

Hey mate awesome information,I have a 130i m and I’m sure it is a n52 g1 ... bro I’ve got a 911 carrera and my little Beamer hammers I’ve got m4 rims and four pot curved rotars,,, man it freaks people out, I can pretty much go around a ninty degree corner at bout 60-70kmlhr and floor it and within 2secs I’m pulling 80 outta the corner... I love it and these yokos on the 130 , better than the pzeros on the 911 . I’m going for a drive lol

Note that I have a check engine light due to the removal of the catalyst converter and the car runs lean, is it because of the engine change or the removal of the catalyst converter?
So the later N52s don't have the camshaft bearing ledge issue? That is my only fear about my early N52.
What are your thoughts of the 08 528xi n52, it seems tricky to find out which n52 mine is cause its just after the lci of the e60. Im pretty sure its the second gen, but still cant tell which one

USA model (it's 330i model 325i, from 2005), it is the proper n52, with the disa and engine code n52b30ou, or how it says on paper registration, n52b30a. I've dyno it and ora only makeing 195bhp. I belive i got the 215bhp version. How can i make it 255 or even 272bhp?

That’s crap I have a tuned ecu to fit all N52 engines regardless XI OR REAR WHEEL DRIVE and the XI version you can have more power then the rear wheel drive version

Well mate I know this isn't a m5 or anything close to the likes of it but realistically speaking what power numbers are we looking at it being able to make and what all can be done to the car to make it faster. Obviously after taking care of maintenance first and foremost. I've never seen or heard of anyone modifying these models here in the states.

Well my friend you haven’t met me !!! I am the guru when it comes to bmw electronics and especially the N52 engine I have many many people using the ecus already and kicking N54 engines arses it’s no joke The ecu makes 272BHP and 410NM on a XI model and it’s very very tuneable

all 330i came with stage 3 intakes. Either yours isn’t a 330i or someone is misleading you

I think he's saying the N52 Silver Top has 3 stage and the Black Top went to 2 stage. On the N53, it went to 3 Stage. However.. said that... the 323i Black Top is 2 stage and 325i Black Top is 3 stage
What do you think about N52B25 on E90 2005 ?
I’m confused.. I’m looking to purchase a 2008 530i and the vin check shows this N52k as having 200kw, which is more powerful.. I’m in AUS though so maybe we got lucky here 🤔 ..Any idea Dean?

N52 2.5L in Australia only has 215hp, are these detuned?
How about e90 318i I'm gonna get a used one from one of my dad coworkers low mileage and bmw did all the maintenance does the 318i have the gray valve cover if not I don't care I can fix it anyway

BMW Doctor well could I take the turbo manifolds off of a n54 and put them on mine? 260 bhp isn’t that much for such a heavy car. I just sold my 300 wheel hp Chevy cobalt ss.

@@racer2k5x43 Put it out of your mind, it's not a good idea at all. They may look similar but that's where the similarities between N52 and N54 end. N52 was designed to be lightweight, the N54 was designed to be strong. There's a video on youtube from BPC Motorsports that analyzes in depth the engine internals for both side by side. Bottom line, no matter what angle you look at it from, you'd be infinitely better off starting off with a 335i to begin with.
They made a few other minor changes including the throttle body, the n52n's came with the throttle body that has plastic molded over the butterfly valve probably to impede airflow and down tune it even more.

never removed the throttle body on them mate but thats very good to know clearly they was restricting it as much as possible and my guess is im sure more people will come who have taken this one apart and the original engine and let me know if there are any more restrictions the reason its limited here is because we never got that engine like you guys did there N52 only ran for 2 years here and they got rid of it completely

BMW Doctor great vid btw man! Also, The intake box on the us model N52’s are very restrictive with a flat triangular shaped filter as opposed to the euro spec ones that had a cone filter.

ChewbaccaFetus yes mate that too it was all to lower emissions as this N52 engine was way over powered and they thought it was this causing to much emissions and to much stress on the engine which it was all lies just to restrict vehicles even further
Does a 2011 come with a ccv breather or its just the pcv built on the valve cover

I got a 1st gen silver top. It's beautiful
You forgot the headers. They are a lot better in this early model. True 3-1 design with equal length piping. Later models have pressed sheet metal design and are more restrictive.
