14 h/c would GREATLY improve his putting if he stopped moving his hips. Moving hips leads to inconsistent contact and thus inconsistent distance. Putter head thru the ball at to the target hole or line.
Super helpful comparing a low vs mid handicapper. I was a 16 handicap at my peak and made a lot of compounding mistakes like you mentioned in your video.
Thank you for showing and narrating this! Always felt like a better score should be doable with better decision making - now you‘ve shown me it‘s absolutely key 🔑

This is pure gold!! Love that you had him access his good chip and maybe be more aggressive, maybe 52 degree
*For those of us in the back:* Laying up with two good shots is _always_ better than going for it and hitting 3 or 4 bad ones.
yes watch the bdog lesson matt links at top, i did and it completely improved my ball striking. i didn't think i was that far off going in, and the focus on the turn of the hips in that video and freeing up the body was incredible...and this video's focus on playing smart is a theme Matt has hit on over the years that i found to be really helpful as well.

Great Video! For those struggling with the short game - try using one club for everything below 100 Meters. It works great for me - we have flags on the range at 40, 60, 80 and 100 meters and I shoot at them as a warmup on every range session and warmup for a round. It became the best part of my game without that much practice...

I think this is a great tool for all clubs. Being able to swing any club at different swing speeds gives you a lot more options for a lot of different scenarios. It also helps give you a better awareness of the club head while making a shot.

Have a look at Pelz's book "The Short Game Bible". My son and I reguarly gap our 4 wedges with a 7:30/9:00/10:30 o'clock and full swing. We aren't changing our swing speeds, just changing the length of our backswing. Now we have 4 x 4 = 16 distances that are easily repeatable (with practice). Doing this dropped my handicap from 12 to 4 in about 6 months. He's a tiny 36kg 13yo and is off singles, largely due to a staggeringly accurate short game. Something like 65% of all shots in the average round are played in 100 or less. Cheers - David

LOL yeah that's how it's done ask them how old they are and how long they've worked there. Smooth
That is the big problem with high handicaps - no idea how far a ball goes. Yeah sure, one time 2 years ago from an elevated tee, downwind, downhill and a firm fairway it bounced hard and rolled out and finally went 250 yards. From that rough into the wind it's going 200 at best. I see it all the time and there is nothing you can say to convince them to take more club or a completely different shot. It's even harder with someone who delofts the club by 5 or 6 degrees and turns a hybrid into a 3 wood for most of their shots.

I always hit a bucket before the round but with no real intentions other than trying to groove my swing. I find it impossible to replicate the anxiety I feel when I'm actually playing. Hey. I'm moving to Chiang Mai soon from South Africa. Any recommendations on golf courses? Also is it worth bringing my clubs with or getting a new set in Thailand.
@thehairygolfer
Жыл бұрын
I'm going to Chiang Mai on holiday in November, they all look good out of town. The ones in the town look a bit rough and ready. As to clubs. The problem over there is import tax, availability and getting a decent fitter. Take your own. All golf kit out there - even tee pegs - are expensive due to import tax. The only thing that is cheap are golf shirts on the discount rail. Last years design. If you join a club don't forget you will still have golf cart fee, caddy fee + tip and most courses will charge you a maintenance fee when you play. Joining may not be your best bet unless you are loaded. On the other hand. You will be able to take advantage of 'Sports Days' when there is discount on green fees and once you have your resident status the Thailand two tier pricing will give you a discount over a tourist anyway. I wish I could retire there but the wife wont go.

B'dog says his 5 wood goes 250 but ends up 40 yards short, not surprising. Worry about just your carry distances boyfriends not what the trackman says your total distance is on the one good one you hit once. Carry distance give you a much better idea of what you can carry for obstacles.

@@RyanS89 everyone always says putting/chipping but as a kid that was very small and got my brothers old clubs which were way too big for me all I did was chip and Putt. I only played for like 2 years til I was 15. Picked it back up 8-9 years later. It was my driver, irons, and woods that were the big problem. Soon irons became long irons and so on until I got better. It was never around the green or on the green where I racked up strokes.
Whoa whoa whoa... hold up... let's all give bdog some love for getting to 14... I remember when he was WAYYYY higher when I first started watching this channel! Well done bdog! Gettin after it!
Step one always play yardage to back of green if you are high handicap. Step 2 remeber: Every mile of hour of wind into you is 1.5 yards off. Every mile hour of wind at your back is 1 yard. Every yard up in the air is a yard off your shot. Yard down is 1.5 yards. Step 3: 50 yards and in on a par 5 is a great posistion. Don't have to hit in two. But the main thing I have learned. To break into single digit handicaps. Get your putting and lag putting on point. 36 putts in 18 holes is your goal. Wind and sloap as a 4 handicap is always always always taken into account before I swing. Also red yellow amd green pins. My dad an old pro always said. If you are a high handicap always aim for middle of the green. You don't have the tools yet to flag hunt.

Exactly Playa. Data is great for your own assessment and your own assessment just shows it doesn't work for you. I would hazard a guess that 80% of golfers will not benefit from the brainless hit it as far down as possible and have 40 yard pitches over bunkers from the rough advice!!

@@GolfSidekick This is definitely one of the biggest problems. Hitting it as far down doesn’t work for Joe Shmoe who doesn’t practice that nearly enough. I disagree with the thumbnail. A 13 Handicap is Not a "hacker". That is a decent golfer. A hacker is a person who doesn't have much experience (only plays once or twice a year/doesn't work on improving their game), and they just hack at the ball (never knowing where it will go). But also I find handicaps to not always be accurate (kind of like the belt system in martial arts), it really depends on what course the player is rated on, I have seen some awful golfers that claim they are below a 10 handicap, then I come to find out they play a very easy golf course (flat, with forgiving greens, easy pin placements, no hazards), I realize the "Slope' Rating is Suppose to equalize the handicap system, but based on what I have seen, it is severly flawed system. To know your true handicap, you need to play some challenging courses.
