I was into the franchise beyond the films. The video games:Die Hard for Turbografx-16 (1990) was awesome. Die Hard:Vendetta (2002) on Xbox was dope and was considered the 4th story after the original trilogy. A limited comic series, Die Hard:Year One (2009-2010) from BOOM! Studios about John McClane as an rookie cop in the 1970s which almost became the 4th film.

Here's a suggestion, if you haven't seen it: *Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan* (1982). After a slow start it becomes an excellent thriller, and it has some iconic lines. (The previous movie, Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), is notoriously slow.)

I forget his name, but apparently the writer of the movie got the idea for John and Holly's relationship/argument being the heart of the story, because he was so stressed out from trying to write a compelling story he got in a fight with his own wife, went for a drive to cool off, and was so steamed he didn't notice a big refrigerator box in the middle of the road. So according to him it was too late to turn, so either it was empty or he was gonna wreck, and his only thought was "I REALLY don't want that to be the last thing I said to my wife."

If you're wondering why the Fox logo at the beginning looks oddly stretched, it's because it was intentionally done so. McTiernan wasn't allowed to shoot Predator in anamorphic to save costs. When he shot Die Hard in anamorphic, he used the non-anamorphic version of the Fox logo and stretched it to look ugly to stick it to Fox.

It's unfortunate that few Die Hard fans are aware of the brilliance and athleticism of Alexander Godunov ("the blond guy") as a dancer. He was a star principal dancer of the Bolshoi Ballet and his dramatic defection from the Soviet Union in 1979 was big news at the time. He died much too young at age 45, a mere 7 years after Die Hard was released. There are videos of his ballet performances on KZread that are well worth checking out.

Thanks for the festive rewatch! The "long-haired blonde guy" is Alexander Gudunov. He was a Russian ballerina and defected to the US. My favorite character of his is the composer in The Money Pit. He died at 45 years old.

I was going to mention the money pit. What a goofy fun movie.

The romance with Karl was the most compelling relationship in this video. I'm really rooting for you crazy kids to make it.

Also, I love how William Atherton was the go to guy to play the self-serving jerk during the 80s, appearing in films like Ghostbusters and Real Genius.

When I was in college working on my music degree, I was part of an avant-garde improvisational ensemble at my university, and a few years after I graduated they invited my band who are all ex members back, to join them in a Christmas concert where we projected Die Hard as a silent film, and we improvised an underscore. We made sure to kind of pass back and forth the ode to Joy motif that's present throughout the movie, and when the vault was opened we all played a very chaotic version of the theme, but otherwise it was all improvised for the whole film. Whole film. It's one of my favorite performance memories.

The fact that, like you say, this Alan Rickman's film debut, and yet the second you see him he has such presence. You know immediately he's in charge from how he's presented, how he carries himself, and that he isn't carrying anything. Everyone else is carrying things FOR him.

I mean, this was his film debut, but the man had a fairly brilliant career on the stage behind him. And nothing is better for teaching an actor how to have presence than live theater. On a stage you just can't fake it and there's no second chances.

Fun fact: the comment that John could be a bartender for all they knew is referring to Willis’ being one prior to his breakout role in this movie.

I saw this at 14 (88) with my dad. ONLY TIME we came out a theatre and said “That was the best action movie I ever seen…” Trust me, that said A LOT.

As the wonderful Cinema Therapy channel said, this movie is essentially a Christmas romance-rekindling movie between John and Holly. Oh, and it also happens to be one of the best action movies ever made.

Man I do enjoy a film that has a “perfect” plan for the villains. All apart from the one unknown. When done right it can not be beat.

My mom allegedly had a friend who was in the area while this was being filmed. I don't know the full backstory, but he had a walkie talkie and was able to get on their frequency, figured out they were filming a movie, and kept calling "Cut!" at random parts ti where someine had to say "Okay, who keeps calling cut?"

Every year me and the wife do a Christmas Eve double bill: Muppets Christmas Carol followed by Die Hard. Always the best.

It's not a big part for him, but I always enjoy seeing Al Leong. He's better known for Big trouble in Little China and Bill and Ted's excellent adventure, but he's got nearly 40 years of credits and is always a treat

This was just as enjoyable as a new reaction. also, I rewatched Die Hard right after rewatching all off Stranger things, and in the 3rd season the russian tells hopper "you wont kill me youre a police man, police have rules" and i was like, dang I did not catch that reference.

They didn't have faith in Willis that he wasn't even pictured in the original poster ads, but once the film hit you couldn't miss him. Worked at a theater showing this back in the day, which was released in July (Hence the Christmas movie argument). IT'S A DAMN CHRISTMAS MOVIE!!!

My guess is that for many people outside the United States, this is, was, and has always been a Christmas Movie, due to the fact that in many countries it didn't open in July. In my country this opened late in October, and ran in theatres all through Christmas - thus it is without any doubt a Christmas Movie!

The movie is based on the 1979 novel, NOTHING LASTS FOREVER, which is a sequel to the 1966 novel THE DETECTIVE which was turned into a Frank Sinatra movie in 1968. In the book, he's called Joe Leland and not John McClane, and Holly was actually his daughter and not his wife. The novel's ending was a lot darker, as Leland shoots Gruber in the chest, but Gruber grabs Holly by the neck of her sweater, where they both fall to their deaths. Leland becomes devastated by his loss. While being loaded into an ambulance, Karl survives and begins to shoot his M-60 machine gun into the crowd, killing various reporters, while Powell fires an M-16 at Karl, successfully kiling him. But one of the bullet's from Karl's gun hits Leland in the thigh, where he's loaded into an Ambulance, but dies of his injury on the way to the hospital.

That does NOT sound like a Christmas story.

Not sure if this was mentioned, but the actor that had candy in lobby improved that moment. He was supposed to die sooner in the movie but because of his improv with the candy, the director bumped him being killed off later on in the movie.

I kinda find it interesting that they had to contractually offer the John McClane to Frank Sinatra because he was in a previous movie: Hart Bochner, who plays Harry Ellis, is the son of actor Lloyd Bochner, who co-starred with Frank Sinatra in The Detective (1968), based on the novel by author Roderick Thorp. This film is based on Thorp's novel "Nothing Lasts Forever", the sequel to "The Detective." Because he had starred in the big-screen adaptation of The Detective (1968), Frank Sinatra may have been offered the role in its sequel but at the age of 73, he may have had to turn it down.

The long haired dude (Alexander Godunov) was also in The Money Pit w/ Tom Hanks which is another great 80s classic, and Alan Rickman in Quigley Down Under and Prince of Theives were a couple of my favorites growing up

One of the other great parts of this film is they made him a smart hero, Stallone and Arnie, were these massive dudes. Willis had to be smart in most of his fights in this film. OH! The long-haired blonde guy, was aparently a real jerk, IIRC no one showed up at his funeral. Yea here's the quote fron IMDb. "Godunov's ashes were released into the Pacific. His mother, brother, niece and nephew, who still live in Latvia, did not attend his service."

I love this movie so much. Having such an emotional heart wrapped in some of the best action in cinema history... True classic.

One of my favorite Bruce Willis movies that doesn't get much love is Hudson Hawk. It is not serious. It is a lark. You get to see Willis' whimsical side like his Moonlighting character. The plot is kinda cheesy but that's what makes it enjoyable to me. I especially love how he and his partner keep sync by singing old tunes.

If you like Bruce's quick witted lines, watch Moonlighting (TV 1985-1989). He even had plenty of hair and put out an album.

I've honestly wanted to see this format for a while (Rewatch instead of First Time). I wanted to see how your reactions changed, and the film selection has opened up immensely!

I like to think of this movie as a prequel to Family Matters. Al had to go into FBI protective services with his wife after killing Karl. Fittingly, Al became Carl Winslow, never forgetting the man he shot. His wife was pregnant with Eddie. This is why he was never in any of the sequels.

I was on the fence, but you guys convinced me, this is indeed a Christmas movie.

The ambulance van at the end was to fix a plothole. (Notice it was not in the truck when our bad guys emerge). But this perfect plan had no exit strategy, so the screenplay had to add the van scene in the parking garage. (This would have been how our villains escape)

Hooray! Die Hard and NicGuys combo. Can you please not leave it so long between reactions? It's too long to wait! Also, if you want to watch a so-bad-it's-fun movie for Christmas try Santa's Slay. It super campy fun and full of bad puns and cliches. I love it.

Other fun fact, speaking of dropping. The scene when he’s in the ventilation shaft and he drops, he was supposed to grab onto the first vent, but the stunt double missed it and grabbed onto another one, which is the shot they kept in the movie

I just recently saw "long-haired blond dude" when rewatching The Money Pit.

I don't know how often I watched that movie until I finally noticed a very small, but important detail. Karl, the big long-haired blond guy? When McLane wraps him up with the chain, he manages to get a hand between the chain and his throat. He probably got just knocked out when he hit the wall, but he didn't choke. While the timing is tight for him to wake up, free himself and leave the roof after the hostages ran past him, it's not impossible.

This is one of the greatest films of all time and I will stand by that The second one is kinda meh but the third one is absolutely fantastic because Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Freakin' Jackson are great together Never seen the other two and have no real desire to honestly

The 4th Die Hard is pretty good. It's not as legendary as the first and third films, but it's still very, very solid. As a Die-hard fan, I highly recommend it The 5th Die Hard is a fucking garbage. Don't waste your time on this piece of shit

Love Die Hard! You know what's funny is that no one seems to question if Lethal Weapon is a Christmas film. I mean that film actually has the song Jungle Bell Rock playing during the opening credits! (Well, up until the hooker jumps off the building to her death). And when you first meet Riggs he's working undercover at a Christmas tree lot. And it actually ends with Riggs going to Murtaugh's house for Christmas dinner!

Guys, i have to say that you just revived my interest in films? my nana was an amazing woman, an accomplished physicist, and an absolute cunt (in a good way) but what she loved was 80s films, and her sheer enjoyment of them was a thing to behold! this one, the pilots parody (where he fries an egg on a woman's belly?), the total recall one, u name it - she loved them! she died 2 years ago from cancer and i recently discovered her dvd collection of flicks i burned when i was at school and after a good cry a put one up and lets say i cannot watch them alone but your love for film made it a lil bit more bearable. so thank you.

If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend you watch The Movies That Made Us, Season 1, ep 4. You get to see the behind the scenes on how Die Hard was made (and how close it came to never being completed). For instance, its praised for how clever the plot is and how well written it is but they were literally writing as the movie was being filmed. It's crazy how well everything worked out.

The Yippee Kay Yay alternate when I first saw this movie was: "Yipee Kay Yay Kemosabe!" Which makes more sense than most i've heard of haha. I've read the book Die Hard is based on, which is also a sequel to another book that was made into a Frank Sinatra detective movie haha. The book is kind of similar, except it's a Texan oil company instead of Japanese Tech. Also the cops daughter works there instead of his wife. It's called Nothing Lasts Forever
