DIE HARD 2 (1990) MOVIE REACTION - OVER THE TOP FUN! - First Time Watching - Review

Ойын-сауық

Welcome to our first-time reaction to Die Hard 2 (1990) movie. Bruce Willis and his charisma absolutely kills it in this! The iconic NYPD officer John McClane returns in this sequel and man do we love the guy! The bad guys arrive on Christmas Eve once again!
"Die Hard 2" follows NYPD officer John McClane, played by Willis, as he finds himself battling foes once again, this time at Washington Dulles International Airport. William Sadler who plays the main villain in this film Col. Stuart was fantastic. His piercing gaze definitely had us creeped out and the way they set him up to be as competent as John McClane is phenomenal. Directed by Renny Harlin this one has a bit more over the top moments but it's still a great time!
We hope you enjoy our reactions, commentary and discussions as we explore this iconic action film.
So sit back, relax and Yippee Ki-Yay!

Holly's line "It's the 90s" and the sentiment that is echoed throughout, became something of a meme in the days before social media, and still sometimes heard today. Whenever someone is surprised by new technology, I always like to say "Hey, it's the 90s!", or even "Wake up and smell the 90s" for added comic effect. People who get the reference are dwindling in number though. 😅

@@OfficialMediaKnights Another thing about the action movies of the 90's, I say that because they called attention to the brutal deaths, and I think that happened because of the influence of director Paul Verhoeven, he is not the director of Die Hard 2, but Robocop and Total Recall, but his influence was noticed in the early 90's in other directors of action movies, you will notice how the movies of that time were very violent too, besides Die Hard 2, like Predator 2, Robocop 2, Cliffhanger, The Rock, have explicitly violent scenes, and it was rare in big studio movies, then a few years later they were lowering the level of violence, so that the films were more suitable for all audiences, otherwise money was lost if they were banned for over 16 or 18 years.

He's very different from Hans in that Hans was likably evil and had Alan Rickman's charisma. Bill Sadler plays Stuart as a cold-blooded zealot with little to no humor and who has a completely sociopathic indifference to human life, including those of his own men. Little to like about the guy, which is the point. I find it amusing, however, that given he's a right-wing army colonel disgraced for his illegal aid of Central American thugs and drug lords for the sake of fighting communism, he's basically Oliver North if he went terrorist.

A few thoughts... I used to work in the mailroom at the headquarters of a major bank. We had a metal detector just like they use at airports (looking for explosives or other bad stuff people might send to banks in the mail)... during training they showed us the scene from this movie where McClean says a ceramic gun won't set off metal detectors. The instructor said the machines don't look for METAL, they show different DENSITIES, so it doesn't matter if it's steel, ceramic, or plastic, if it's dense enough to be a gun, it'll show up. Die Hard is a Christmas Movie. Die Hard 2 is not. I can't explain it. William Sadler is such a good actor. One of those guys who's been in EVERYTHING and he's always good. Great video. Thanks guys. While it looked cool, I always laugh at how huge the plane explodes even though they clearly said, it was empty on fuel. Also, how John is kicked off the plane before the fuel starts to spill, and it’s trail is conveniently an inch in front of him, so he can light it without setting himself on fire! Still a great movie.

I’m reluctant to refer to anything as “the best” in general, as that’s such a subjective viewpoint, so I’ll simply say that I believe you’re seriously going to enjoy the third entry in the series- “Die Hard With a Vengeance”. The story is fantastic, and the cast is nothing short of legendary. I’ll spoil nothing, and leave it at that. You two are phenomenal btw. Im not one to watch reactions frequently, but the way that you two actually interpret what you’re watching, and see it well beyond face value is a very big breath of fresh air. I applaud you for that.

"Die hard with a vengeance" is a stupid, inflated, generic action movie that should never have been released under the "Die hard" monicker. You couldn't possibly spoil that movie, it's such a big turd that not even the great Samuel L.Jackson can save it.

@@erikthompson619 do you have some kind of personal stake in that film? You’ve jumped on more than one comment here dropping enough salt to clear snow off of an interstate highway. What’s the story? You’ve got to keep in mind, taste is a very subjective thing. Just because you don’t like something, doesn’t mean it’s bad. Just because you do like something, doesn’t mean it’s good. It’s all up to personal interpretation and connection to the subject matter. I follow TMK because I resonate with and appreciate the way they “see” the films they watch. They see things well beyond surface level. They truly seek to understand what they’re watching, and if you pay attention, you see very little (if any) negativity coming from them. Too much of that being spread around these days. It’s a much needed, and a very welcomed escape from all that. Taking a page from their book may not be the worst idea. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

13:45 You might not have gotten this, but when he says "Just the fax, ma'am", it was a reference to the 1960's tv cop show "Dragnet". The main character, Detective/Sgt. Joe Friday, was known for saying variations of the phrase "Just the facts, ma'am/sir" when a witness would ramble irrelevant information or opinions. The phrase made its way into pop culture and parody.

These are the movies that I think put Bruce Willis on par with all the other action stars of that era like VanDamme, Arnold, and Stallone... But the thing that sets John McClane apart is the fact that he's not some hulking figure, killer soldier, or martial arts expert. To make a point, John often seems to get no cooperation because of jurisdictional differences. In the first one he was a cp from NY in LA, and in this one it's reversed (which makes no sense for Holly to be flying in to see him in NY if he was an LAPD cop), plus you have Airport Police plus the FAA, and the military involved. John has no authority or input in the matter, so the remarks about no civilians in the tower would be realistic. Most people don't notice the blue and red tape around the magazines. Die Hard was a Christmas movie because it takes place at an office Christmas party.

*Artistic license, firearm operation:* If you fire blank rounds out of a fully automatic or semi-automatic weapon without a blank adaptor, you have to manually recycle each time you fire. Because without a bullet traveling down the barrel, all the gas is ejected through the muzzle, none will go through the gas tube to push the bolt back automatically. So when all the characters were rock and rolling with their submachine guns, that was pure Hollywood. If it was real, they would have had to pull back the charging handle manually each time a round was fired. (Either that, or have blank adaptors on their muzzles, but then there would be no way they could convince anybody they were firing live rounds!)

The most troubling thing about this movie to me is how we're supposed to be all celebratory and full of the Christmas spirit at the end, even as the dead bodies of hundreds of passengers still lie in the flaming wreckage of the crashed plane. In truth, that event would cast a pall over everything that followed, one which would remain raw and unresolved at the end. What's more, how did a plane whose fuel tank was supposed to be "bone dry" go up in such an incredible conflagration?
