This is one of my fav movies of all time and I saw it in the theaters. I’ve NEVER interpreted that scene in that way! This is the first time I’ve heard that thought. I never thought the shark was recognizing her. I thought the shark was so smart that it was realizing that if it went for her it would get speared, so it waited just that one moment and when he dropped the spear and lept into the water the shark knew it was then safe to attack. Plus when he jumped in, the shark new it was 2 for the price of one.

Basically to add on, she was using herself as bait. But then shark in turn used her as bait. Had it immediately killed her, the shark would have been in range for the spear, and 2 there would have been no reason for the guy to drop the spear. I think the shark was baiting him.

So one of the things some people miss about the sharks. In the beginning Carter mentions ‘it took two to slow her down’ and Scott responded ‘you missed’ He clearly didn’t miss we see that. When he brings the shark into the lab he only shoots it once, it was awake the entire time because it needed two.

@azazello1784 The monster meets its maker trope is the most predictable ending in cinema history though. I would've gladly taken the "predictable happy original ending" over the silly, cheap, uneventful cop out we got that opened up a plethora of plot holes and ruined the overall narrative. Not just her surviving, but the entire third act was altered due to her comically silly death - as was the overall story as she was supposed to be the main character and the filmmakers were forced to go back and axe so much content and dialogue that involved Susan to make you feel more impartial toward her and so she'd seem like less of a central figure when in reality, it just made her character bland and uninteresting while transforming the movie into a silly popcorn flick. It's like Batman vs Superman vs BVS Ultimate Edition. They sacrificed quality to appease a few gore hounds.

23:46 It's called a Navy Crank Phone. It's a military invention from WW2, because in a water-rich environment, having a constantly powered phone could introduce a shock risk. So, when you need a connection, you spin a crank, which spins a magnet inside a coil of wire, creating electricity. The other half of the system is that the handset is sound-powered, so that the crank "calls" the phone of that you have selected on a separate dial, and then the phone itself converts sound waves into electricity to send along the wires. It's a pretty robust technology, so much so that it is even still used today on a lot of ships that spend a lot of time out on the water... think tankers, cargo ships, even military ships like the Nimitz-class aircraft carriers.

Although her intentions were good and she does have some character growth, it felt wrong for her to survive with a romantic interest when she had been acting selfishly for most of the film while the rest of the cast were dying. Her having the gall to use herself as bait (esp throwing her whole body into the water, away from the ladder) and to expect that she still had a chance of surviving honestly made her surprise death feel warranted. • @Poisonwc

The thing about Sam Jackson's death scene was that if it had been ANYONE else, we'd all have seen it coming because: 1. Carter warned him not to get too close to the pool; 2. He was the only one with his back to the pool with everyone else literally on the other side of the room; and 3. He was making the obligatory "inspirational speech".

It's confusing, because apparently the film crew built really accurate models of mako sharks - and then painted stripes on one to use as a tiger shark (despite mako and tigers looking very different in real life).

@@iapetusmccool yeah that’s one of the mistakes I’ve realized in the movie My guess is that since they were building these animatronics for 8 months they were in the middle of work to create a tiger shark but instead of wasting another few months they decided to paint one the animatronics with stripes to look like a tiger shark. Another difference we can tell are the CGI versions the Makos are a bit larger than the tiger shark

Such a fun watch, a perfect B-movie vibe but elevated by its self-awareness, cast and production value. The Sam Jackson twist was so well done - at the time (coming off 'Pulp Fiction', 'The Phantom Menace' etc.) he was _easily_ the biggest star in the movie so we all thought he was gonna be the main guy. (and bonus points for featuring _surely_ film history's only instance of "Chekhov's shark dodge" :)

A Great White Shark can jump 8-10 feet out of the water, the record even records is of 15 feet. Just imagine the speed n force of impact combined with there bite force with those sharp teeth. They literal cut there prey in half, even light bite made just to tests if things are food or not taken body parts n must of the time kill the victim by blood lost. PS: Thresher Sharks, the ones with that long pointed tail can jump 20 feet, and the Shortfin Mako has recorded jumps of 30 feet off the water. Half fun at the Beach n boats on open Ocean.

The woman that died at the end, indirectly (or very directly but without intention) she was the bad character, she wasn't thinking about everybody else , she was thinking about her dad. She and her friend violated rules that exist for a reason (I wonder if that happened with the coronavirus) and many of other people died. That was the problem for many with Jurassic park 4? The woman in charge (Dallas something) lived happily ever after with Chris Pratt when she was responsible for almost everything, She knew more and they told her over and over, and her secretary had a horrible death when she did nothing. At the beginning, in te 90s, i was also "aaah, i wanted her to stay with the guy" but now, coldly, it was the right message, can not provoke that and have a happy ending.

As I’ve gone through and watched quite a lot of your videos over the past few days, one of the biggest takeaways I’ve had is that yes, you are giving us your reactions, but you aren’t overtaking what you’re watching…if that makes sense. I’ve come across a lot of reactors that talk so much that I sometimes wonder if they’re actually even paying attention. I also love how you two focus on the little details that most people (including myself) would overlook. Funny, when I first saw Deep Blue Sea years ago, I thought it was so cheesy lol. But after watching your reactions, I’ve realized it’s not as bad as I initially thought. I don’t know if you guys take suggestions but I feel like Contagion might be a good one to react to. Anyway, I look forward to whatever you both have for us next! Take care and happy new year! By the way, Denise, you could make an audiobook just reading the alphabet and I’d buy it. Ah... interesting choice guys. Not too many people reacted to this cult classic. I used to watch it all the time on bootleg VHS back in the day. While this does have some really cheesy/cringy parts and somewhat horrible effects, this still does have some amazing and quite suspenseful moments. In a way, we relate to the sharks. All they ever wanted was to be back in the water where they belong, not to be tested like like lab rats for an experiment and be used. Also originally as some have pointed out, Saffron Burrow’s character was supposed to live but the test audiences didn't like her so they changed it. She was most likely the only character I had contempt for. Since she started all of this and the reason why everyone, herself included are all dead. Of all of the creatures to do this shit on, they really chose sharks LOL.

The thing about Samuel L. Jackson's death was; the movie trope of the one rousing everyone to do their best, is usually one of the survivors. When I saw it at the theater it was one of the first times this turned that movie trope on it's head. Everyone gasped and then after a pause, there was laughter, like wtf did we just see?!! But it served its purpose. It let the audience think no one was safe. Not even LL Cool J, who always plays mellow likeable characters.

Fun fact, that Louisiana license plate is the same as the one from Jaws. I'm not sure if it's the same exact prop as this was almost a quarter century later, but it was at least an exact replica. The plate itself("007" 981) was an homage to the James Bond film Live & Let Die, which is set in Louisiana, and the 72 and 73 on either side of Louisiana refer to the years that movie was produced and released.
