I have created text in Inkscape and converted object to path as you demonstrated. After importing to Easel, the first thing I do is select all and combine them. Then I can resize proportionally. Another option would be to initially group them as opposed to combing so I can ungroup them later if needed to manipulate individual letters.

I use spetools bits mostly, because they are the least expensive out there....
