Did Tudor get this wrong? NOT worth the hype - AET Clips

Clip from EP. 15 - Overrated VS Underrated Watches - Rolex, Omega, Tudor, Patek
• 6 Overrated VS 6 Under...
The Tudor Pelagos is a well-respected and highly regarded dive watch. While opinions may vary on its design and aesthetics, its functionality and durability are widely recognized as exceptional.
Andrew has a few comments on the watch, but do you think that Tudor got it right or wrong with this watch? Is it worth the hype?

I don't understand the hate for the Ranger. Tudor did a great job with making it close to the original but adding subtle touches to it. I had a Pelagos 39 come into my AD, and I almost bought it, until I saw the Ranger in person. The Pelagos was to similar to my sub while the Ranger was much more stunning in person. I ended up with Ranger and couldn't be happier.

I like the Ranger and I wouldn’t feel like a kid wearing it, especially not at 42yo. The BB36 is more expensive than the Ranger (where I live at least), but the BB36 doesn’t have the MT5402 movement nor the T-Fit bracelet and the brush satin finish. I don’t need, nor I’d buy, a €4k watch if I get all of this with the Ranger. the design of the dial is simple and highly legible. The Ranger will be my first luxury watch. Andrew won’t change my mind. Much love to the AET team ! Edit: I collected my Tudor Ranger on March 25th. Absolutely love it !

Come on guys, the Ranger was clearly under-rated! It has been a very divisive watch from the get-go upon release; with many bashing the plain looks, negative dial space, size of the numerals etc. It is watch that seems to be in a 'see in person before final judgement' category for further appreciation. I also think the Nato is a must on this one and helps provide a lot more character for the piece!

As a proud owner of an FXD, I didn't find anything appealing about the std Pelagos - too chunky, didn't like the blue version coloring, but I fell in love with the niche-ness of the FXD that makes it feel unique and special and it gets 90% of my wrist time now. It feels like a true tool watch and wears casually really well, definitely way more wearable than the original, I only reach for the OP41 when I dress up a bit. Have thought of replacing it with a Pelagos39, but it doesn't feel as special.

Do not see how the P39 replaces an OP41 (Same lug width though and P39 is almost P40) but I would say P39 feels more special (depending on what colour OP you have maybe) 😍 FXD is my favourite Tudor though, and very special if an MN21. Tudor said only 150 were sold in U.K. and they have 180 dealers. FXD blue is way nicer than standard Pelagos blue for sure, but standard Pelagos blue is a bit of a classic and more wearable on a bracelet l feel.

Andrew seems to be mainly focused on the size of the bezel, dial, and snowflake hand, while Adrian is an issue with the difference in color between them. For my wrist size of around 7.3 inches, I think the P42 looks just right - the P39, on the other hand, feels a bit too small to me personally. As for the color difference, my eyes aren't discerning enough to pick up on it, so I'm lucky in that regard! To me, its the perfect watch, at least for today! Thanks for sharing gents!

Here’s what’s so frustrating about this take- we fall in love with watches because of the experiences we share with those watches. Your example of seeing a big fat watch on a grown man’s wrist- how do you know it wasn’t a gift from a loved one. For the grown men that bought and made memories with the black bay heritage- it’s not all about “upgrading” to the 58 for a smaller size on the wrist. Tool watches are supposed to be with you for decades- it’s inevitable that the brand will come out with a slimmer version. This is absolutely the wrong take from an influencer.

I mean at the end of the day watches are all about preferences, some like bigger others smaller, some prefer heritage others not so much, you also have to factor people’s budget. I personally don’t think the Ranger is overrated as it’s not in such high demand like the BB58 or the Pelagos, something popular can be said to be overrated, at least that how I see it. If you don’t like something that’s fine, and if you think something is a bad product sure as long as it’s followed with arguments, such as bad movement, low quality materials, over priced, etc. other than that it just falls into likes and dislikes.

I bought a Ranger and I have a 9 inch wrist, I went out to buy another watch saw it asked for it to try it on, tried the white dial/green dial Omega divers a Pelagos 42 (black) and the ranger, the Omegas were pretty watches the Pelagos I really nearly bought but in the end it was the Ranger "boring" (I prefer to say simple) design that won it for me, I actually was quite disappointed with the Omega's after wanting another one for so long they were nice but at 5.5k just felt there wasn't enough coming from that watch. Also I don't get the love for the green dial when I saw it in person I was thinking "humm ok it's ok but compared to the white dial it looks pretty naff to be honest" Obviously just personal opinions everyone is different.

Kinda weird to talk about the aesthetics of a professional dive watch that is obviously built with purpose in mind. Also very weird to judge the wearer vs the watch and compare the 39mm to the 42mm when one is essentially a rebranded BB58 and the other has a legit Helium GEV. My only qualm on the Pelagos is the QC on the bezel, which is an incredible 60 click titanium bezel when the lume stays in place.

Understatement with mat finishing, because of it's tool nature. Now the Ranger. I struggle to support that, but the P01, is a beautiful cool watch with a story to die for. And a great narrative always makes a great watch?!? Discuss?

The Blue Pelagos has a mesmerising design appeal to me, it reminds me of an ink well in an industrial design inspired from an Isaac Asimov type world... but the case thickness , the width and thickness of the bracelet and the sharp edges of the clasp put the wearer in constant conflict between design and ergonomics like a dinking bird drinking beautiful design and then swaying back from how it wears on the wrist..still the design ,that blue against the cold flat grey titanium makes it irresistible and I would regret not keeping mine , no doubt! ..and it's more in line with the Sea Dweller than the submariner. Thank you for a cool video gentlemen.

I love the look and especially the color of the Pelagos, but now that all the watch companies are completely turning their backs on the so called “big watch craze” and churning out all these sub 40mm watches without having a larger model, the watch dorks that happen to be on the bigger end of the body scale just have to smile and move along at all the cool watches that look ladylike on our wrists. So the first guy who opined should think in terms of moods and situations and not just what that one piece might convey in absolute terms. But I get his example of a guy in a suit with a chunky diver. I see plenty of those in the office. They are juvenile at least in their watch journeys, because they could not leave the Panerai at home and wear a freaking dress watch, or at least a sports one that fits under a cuff.

The older tudors were more refined and a lot slimmer. Take the aeronaut , 41mm gmt , but only 10.5mm thick. Great bracelet, slim no nonsense clasp with 5 micro adjust holes. And a real rolex feel . The new versions are chunky , with big clasps and thick bracelets and the 39mm are a bit feminine in size for a large man. If you want the best tudors you need to look at their past . I think the fit and finish were better then too. Modern tudors by comparison are a bit cheaply made considering their price point.

I’m sorry but Andrews reasoning is terrible for both watches. We only need to ask why are in to watches in the first place…? Because of that child like desire for something cool that makes you feel good… the sort of styling that Andrew likes is not my taste as I find it a bit to “invicta” with skeleton dials and fake blued metals that only bankers and people who never touch grass would use because of how delicate they are. But he is obviously more flamboyant than someone like me and yes I’d consider myself a honorary captain boring but I enjoy a watch built to be used. And yes we can all argue “I use this that and the other all day and it’s fine…” but we all know if you have something like a pelagos on it will take a hell of a beating and the same with a ranger I have a ranger 79910 and love it as my daily I love the retro field style dial and find it clean and easy to read on the move I have very large wrists so don’t find the large size a problem “it even feels like a smaller Watch would on a smaller wrist” but to say it’s childish is a nonsense like to say anything with Roman numerals is for retirement home candidate’s or digital watches are for people who can’t read analog watches. I think I’m less mad that it was a dig at a watch I own and more that it was such a weak sauce answer from someone I thought was a bit more open minded than that. If however the new Tudor ranger was to have been put in overrated for the reason of how everyone was snatching them up if they wanted them or not just because the hype train had arrived then yes 110% the new ranger would deserve to be there but the pelagos “not 39” as well… Andrew had the only good argument with bezel and dial not being the same blue other than that it’s a tool watch “not a sport watch” it’s made to do a job it just so happens not many people need them or use them for that job anymore. We need to remember tool watches are not sport watches. Anyway after my rant I wouldn’t want Andrew to start ripping his shirt off like he did with Nikko the other night again so all I have to say we might not always agree but keep up the great work been loving about effing time 👌🏻👏🏻✌🏻🕘

While I don't share his opinion, I respect his right to express it. It's possible that his preference for the P39 over the P42 is due to his smaller wrist size, which makes the latter less comfortable for him. From his perspective, a smaller watch may seem more refined and masculine. That being said, I personally find the P42 to be a great fit for my 7.3" wrist. At the end of the day, watch size and style are subjective, and what matters most is finding what works best for each individual.

@@NeoWahNah I feel the majority of what you say here is very flimflam. Yes we would both feel what we said is correct why else would we say it… but the fact still stands he had nothing held to him to make this argument yet episode’s around that one and only days/ weeks with live’s and he brings up numerous watches with big block numbers that he loves or owns. So it is a nonsense and it’s not like they dropped this show on him this will have had time for him to think. There was as I mentioned and there are still reasons that would make sense “even if we disagree” but this was weak. and considering I’m a anti 2010 and on era hublot person he can make great arguments for things like hublot I have started to think about them a little more “not going to buy one any time soon but…” to say he got me thinking about the brand is well done. But this Tudor argument is “with what we have herd and seen” weak due to his ownership and compliments of very similar watches and watches with exactly those features.

The dial on the Pelagos seems like plastic. I actually went to my AD to purchase it, and when I had it on wrist I just wasn’t that impressed. Now let me say I love Tudor. I own a Black Bay chrono panda and I absolutely freaking love it. So I’m not knocking the brand whatsoever.

Honestly, I think of the most hyped watches from Tudor and I think of BB58, BB Pro, and Pelagos 39mm. The Pelagos 39 is literally the Tudor everyone is talking about right now. Plus it does have some nods to the Sub with the red lettering. I went for the BB 41mm after trying on the 58 and it just felt too small for a diver. But I also have big wrists 40-41 is really my sweet spot. I love this conversation. Tudor has always had Rolex comparisons for a reason. So just buy the ones you like!

So the Aussie thinks the P42 is too chunky and "blocky" while wearing a hideously chunky "blocky" ring that looks like it was was chopped off the end of a bit of old pipe. I'm 6'4 with a 7.5 inch wrist, the P42 fits me just fine, the unisex P39 looks like I'm borrowing my wife's watch. Only small men or women should wear the P39.

As there is only limited space and time for me to make some kind of comment. What absolute drivel coming out of Andrews mouth. A comment on masculinity… coming from the man who removed his shirt on a live podcast. And, who says we have to grow up or become more refined. No one that’s who. I don’t own a Pelagos by the way. Again subjective drivel.
