Before You Buy That Tudor Black Bay 54, 58 Or Pelagos FXD Watch: What You Should REALLY Know

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Are the Tudor Black Bay and Pelagos FXD watches overhyped or are they the best in their price range? Today I take a different approach and share what you absolutely must understand (and something that a lot of people neglect to address) when it comes to this brand's dive watches. Are these Tudor divers the new Submariners of your dreams? Or are they exalted, overpromoted timepieces that some watch reviewers have elevated without fully understanding the design and watchmaking legacy of what came before them? In this video I share what you should know before you buy a Tudor Black Bay 54, 58, Pelagos 39, or FXD watch, and what I believe is the ultimate Tudor diver. I also compare them to the Rolex Submariner ref. 1680, and Tudor Submariner ref. 79090. What do you think of the watches featured in this video? And what's your favorite Tudor dive watch? Please share in the comments.

I always enjoy your videos by the way. I have been a submariner purchaser, all vintage and neo (which were new in that time) and I got bored with them. Same with the OP Sea Dwellers. The Tudor sub like yours...is (to me) a 1680 Sub with different dial and name pretty much..... I Agree...the BB 41's are slabs and that is off-putting to me. The 58 and 54 are actually very nice watches. Pelagos 42 is a fun handsome and chunky watch. Enjoyed this vid thank you

Great video, classic TGV. I went in on a BB58 gilt dial initially because it's the closest thing I can get to my dive watch grail - Rolex 14060M. After 1 year of ownership, I really appreciate it for its own personality and I absolutely love it. Couldn't do without it.

You know me T! I’ve been lucky enough to have held and worn vintage subs and Tudor subs throughout the last 4 years because of this channel. Much that I prefer older historic references to own, in 2023 it ain’t practical!;) dodgy bezels, lightweight hollow link bracelets, clasps where you only have to tense your butt cheeks for it to pop out! The ETA’s reliable yes! Still after 40/50 years? Maybe but what can not be dismissed is the in house METAS and COSC movements Tudor have exclusively for their watches now. Yes they are a more affordable watch than it’s bigger brother Rolex BUT! It can no longer be said they are a poor man’s Rolex anymore. Nothing will feel like a Tudor either unless it has ‘Tudor’ on the dial;) love the philosophy my friend and you’re approach to this subject to!

Pelagos 39 was a bit too dressy for me (and the example I handled had a bezel so misaligned it would beat any Seiko in a contest to misalign a bezel), so I ended up with a blue homage of it that kept the more toolish vibes of the bigger version on the dial and bezel. Love it. Only serious flaw I find is that the crown is a bit oversized for the 2824-based movement it comes with, and it digs up into the wrist if not on a NATO strap (which is how I intended to wear it, so that's not too much of an issue for me).

Excellent commentary. I own a 2019 Submariner and I love my Tudor BB58 blue not because it’s like a Sub but because it’s has its own identity. I find it to be nearly the exact same size as my 5 digit reference Rolex models. I also agree the Pelagos FXD is the most pure tool expression of Tudor divers and need to add one to the collection! I like Tudor for being different than Rolex not just a cheaper version.

I have a BB58 blue and just absolutely love it, ended up selling a datejust 41 because it got zero wrist time and was just sat in my collection gathering dust. I now rock a three watch collection and the black bay gets the most wrist time. I don't see Tudor as the brand people buy because they can't get a Rolex I see Tudor as the brand people buy who understand where Tudor is positioned in the segment. Excellent value for money.

It’s amazing how my watch preferences have evolved. Starting out I couldn’t have imagined wanting a vintage watch and now I’d actually prefer it to modern releases. A vintage Tudor sub over a modern Rolex sub a 100 times over! The Tudor no date sub would be my dream watch but a 79090 like yours I would not turn away lol. If I were intentionally going in harms way, one of the early Pelagos with the ETA movement and 500 meters of water resistance would be my first choice. Another outstanding presentation as always! I was then on Wait list for Tudor All Blacks LE with local AD and after several months they had it available, although I lost out to their highest spender (even though on CV I felt that probably deserved it more Haha). Anyways I look forward to getting the BB58 some time in the future as I had recently fell vicitim to several impulse buys (of watches) and want to really focus on wearing (enjoying) the current ones in my humble collection. Grazie mille for the excellent and informative VDO as always.

My favorite modern Tudor is the Pelagos 39. I just love it on wrist. Worn & Wound posted a great video comparing the 14060M Rolex Submariner to the P39 and found the Sub to be 39.4mm in diameter, while the P39 is 39.6mm. I think maybe that slightly larger than 39mm size (with the bezel sticking out a tiny bit) is why it wears so well, yet does not feel diminutive even on my just over 7 inch wrist. The only thing I would love more is if they had a date version and if they had a blue option. My favorite vintage Tudor is the blue snowflake Submariner, without a doubt. The prices of those now are eye watering though.

I feel it might just be the ultimate vintage inspired diver (for me) and find the dial incredibly beautiful, the build quality exceptional, and the movement super reliable and accurate. I've swapped it to the new ranger bracelet with Tfit clasp and it's spectacular. In hindsight I would maybe of preferred the new 41 on jubilee, but at the time the 54 had me and I still love it so no regrets, I may get the 41 eventually or may not, no rush. Hi TGV! Thanks for this overview of the Tudor Sub history. For now I’m quite happy with my modern Pelagos 39 because it wears so perfectly light and comfortably. Best regards, Claus

TGV, I love your intro. This one most of all: where the first stunning image of your grandfather invites us into the video. 7:30 got it! I snorted. Thanks for putting out this video. It back up my personal belief, that the submariner is the most useful automatic watch ever produced. I think that every watch collector enthusiast should own at least one because of the visual aesthetic, as well as the practical usage. It’s an ultimate tool watch.

Amazing knowledge and info Tristano! Thanks! Since 2019 I own the 58 and It's already worn and beautifully scratched... I love it. wears amazingly, it is also very pleasing aesthetically (for me, architect here), the thiner lines in the bezel compared to the thicker non matching lines (bezel-dial) from the 54, the red triangle and the second markers... The way the gilt catches light... even the clasp is shorter and although you can't "perfectly" adjust it, it fits more ergonomically. I wasn't looking for a Submarineresque vibe, I was looking for a Tudor that can age with me, although I love the Sub's history both Tudor's and Rolex. So I get the 54 is more refined... and I get the Pelagos 39 is amazing as a contemporary real tool watch, but this 58 is staying on my wrist and hopefully will end on my daughter's one day (bought it because of her being born). Cheers!

Love these videos. Love the history nods. Bravo. My Tudor timeline went 58, Chrono, Sub 79090. To my latest present to myself a S & G black face which was a present to myself I never thought I’d like a two tone watch. Too blingy, that thought Always stopped me buying the 16613LN. But I adore the thing.

great Video! I had my eye on an BB58 for quite some time. I recently purchased my first Tudor! Biggest watch purchase I have ever made. But It was not a diver, It was a new Smooth bezel Blackbay 41 with the new Jubilee style bracelet with the tfit clasp. To me slimmer case and lack of dive bezel fixed all the qualms i had with the BB divers. In my mind its like a date just without the date but the iconic snowflake hands.

Great stuff as always! Hot take to add into the debate… Of all of the tudor’s I’ve experienced the one that give me the closest Submariner vibe is the one I own… The P01!!! Case wise it’s nothing alike, yet with the dial, crystal and design of ergonomics of the bezel somehow there genuinely feels like a sub is trapped in the steel waiting to be carved out lol

I think the Pelagos FXD totally rocks. I have the blue Marine Nationale one myself. It's the closest thing to a genuine "tool watch" which is still being made today, IMO, and it makes a great watch for weekend casual wear. I don't think it's meant to be Tudor version of "a Submariner". It might have some DNA from a Submariner, but I'd say it has DNA from a Sea-Dweller and a titanium Yachtmaster too. It is its own thing.

Awesome video TGV, really enjoyed it. . To me the Pelagos is the natural sucesor to the Tudor Sub, its where evolution has taken it, rather than the throwback BB models that want to recreate the past.

When starting this video, I said to myself: he's going to recommend buying a vintage Tudor sub! 😆 For the record, I've owned 3 versions of the Black Bay, including the 58 and GMT currently. My favorite is the pepsi GMT, with the top reason being that it's a "true" gmt and makes an excellent travel watch. I recently went on an international trip, and I brought 3 other watches with me, but the gmt stayed on my wrist 90% of the time. It was great for everything from snorkeling and exploring to visiting a somewhat nice restaurant. For reference I'm 6'5" tall and of a sturdy build, so the case size and slab sides don't really have the impact on my 7.5" wrist that they impart elsewhere. Great video as always, Prost!

I love the Black Bay 58 Blue for what it is. I prefer it over the Rolex Subs or even the vintage Tudor Subs. Nothing to do with cost, I would chose the BB58 Blue over the Rolex Sub always.

I wanted to avoid the hype train that is such the modern, watch market, so I waited another year after release and purchased the Pelagos 39mm used. I love the watch and got it because I wanted a more modern Tudor. I also own a 79091 Blue Dial Tudor and that is honestly my favorite Tudor because of the case design ... so I couldn't agree more with your analysis on the modern Tudor designs. They do have that "hockey puck" look to them. The case designs for divers of the late 70's through the late 90's in my opinion were simply the best! Great analysis and video!

John Carpenter’s “They Live” is very under-appreciated and the use of black and white as the sunglass effect is a novel and inexpensive effect that works. Film seems as timely today as it did during the days of Reagonomics, too. I wish Tudor would release a smaller Pelagos FXD - their jacquard straps are offer a lot more depth than a printed strap.

I was thinking T should have posted a video now. This looks to be a great one. Although I've been telling you about the navi 806, certainly been looking at a few others 🤣🤣. Looking forward to what you recommend. In terms of Tudor, although not dive, I think if they introduced their albino GMT in the black bay pro size would be pure class. Black bay pro has a place in my heart too.
