Tudor's Perfected Pelagos? Fashionable New 39mm (Critique)

Ойын-сауық

A Discussion around Tudors 39mm Pelagos. A real surprise. The new Language that the Gen. 3 Pelagos uses is a departure away from its roots. Being driven by aesthetics and streamlining and less of a focus around being experimental and professionalism. The process of removing things has turned this watch into yet another addition to the collection instead of something that stands out.

What are your thoughts around this new model? Edit: My overall opinion about the 39mm is it’s beautiful. For all the criticism I give this model line (mainly to do with its change of course compared to the earlier models) I mention at many points how stunning the piece is. It’s obvious. Looking at it again a day later, it’s mind-blowing to think that we’re now seeing a 39mm Pelagos (how will the BB58 survive in the future with a proposition like this?) At its core I believe the Pelagos has always been about professionalism and not flashiness. It’s a watch that deserves to be larger in size, burly and experimental. I feel that the process of removing things has turned this new model line into another addition to the catalogue instead of something that stands out (meshing the lines between the casual Black Bay and the hardcore diver)

IMO, it would have to have polished surfaces to be properly flashy. This way it's really just a good daily wearer, and I don't think there's anything really wrong with it being one. Something in the middle between Black Bay and fully hardcore is what I like about it. I will grant the point that a fully graduated bezel would be better.

Professional what? Divers? I don't think any pro divers are using these and from what I understand the MN divers have the option of buying and FXD, it is not even issued equipment. Real divers are using dive computers, so all Tudor watches are fashion pieces (like almost all watches now really) and this one is aimed squarely at the female market.

It’s the spirit of the Pelagos design that is the issue. The idea it is designed around being a tool. Even if we are not going to go 500m deep, why kill the aspiration. The same argument can be made about the Omega Proplof. Not everything needs to be mainstream. Part of the attraction of the Pelagos was that it moved Tudor away from the more flashy direction of the modern Submariner. If the Pelagos line moves too far from its original ethos, it risks to get lost amongst the other divers. Instead of staying in the original formula, what would stop them from extending the line to a two-tone or solid gold Pelagos? You could apply exactly the same narrative of the new Tudor Pelagos promo to either of those variants. And that’s the point where the new variant loses something. It’s still an elegant design though, and if people are rushing to buy it and that is the direction Tudor want for the Pelagos line, then more power and sales dollars for them…

I don't know how to say this without it coming across in a negative way and I certainly don't intend that, but is it possible you don't like this watch because it came after your FXD? If I had bought an FXD and had to compromise with only pass-thru's and with no bracelet, I would be genuinely upset. Not that the FXD isn't amazing on its own.

@@Nefville Such a great question Nef and I know it might sound like I’m embittered by the whole ordeal, but not at all. I got my 39mm diver with flashy bits and a micro-adjusting clasp (Seamaster 57) years before and wanted a more toolish machine to pair with it (ying and yang). And bracelets on watches, 90% of my watches are always living on straps. It’s hard to put into words how thoroughly the FXD has been thought through. I think with me, I really enjoy the subtitles of things - like how the insert was done, how the bezel teeth are beefier, how to text on the dial was placed, the colour of blue used... I could go on 😆 But thank you for asking brother! 🥃

Sounded like a 9min video of buyer's remorse. They gave us EVERYTHING we wanted. Smaller case, no date, red line text...and yet people will still find a reason to complain. Btw this watch isn't for me, my wrists need a larger size case, but I can still appreciate the appeal and need for the masses. Bravo Tudor

This is easily the most perfect diver out there for me. Perfect dimensions, bang-on bracelet adjustability, no date, etc. it would make sense to rebrand the 42mm the “Pelagos Professional”. Let’s see how popular it will be, and if it suffers from a lack of “je ne sais quoi”.

Tudor is in the business of selling watches and the fact that this will sell like hotcakes is the most important pushback to your crits. This time, I think you're being too harsh. Call it Pelly Light if you like, but it opens the door of Pelagos ownership to people who loved the image but found the 42mm version too much watch to wear. Let's be honest, how many "Real Pelagos Owners" have taken their 42mm down even 20 metres underwater?

A very smart move by Tudor, making a more compact, thinner version of the great Pelagos that will appeal to a wider audience of watch fans. Having the outstanding in-house COSC movement, essentially from the Tudor BB58, but curious why the MC5400 previously used on exhibition case back models like the 925. Offering a titanium bracelet with the T-Fit clasp and a complimentary rubber strap is a big plus. If they add alternative dial colours to the range this may well give the Omega SM300 Diver a proper run for its money as a more tool-like alternative.

The new clasp looks incredibly smart to me. One of the things I like most about my 42mm Pelagos ETA is the interaction of the indexes and angled chapter ring. I get that a smaller diameter means they had to do away with this, but for me, this watch has slightly less character.

  • @RabidMortal1

That stepped chapter ring MADE the Pelagos IMO. This new watch is like the OG Pelagos' younger brother, trying to break free of the older brother's shadow but having no sense of what makes their family special. The 39 Pelagos will be the Tudor “Sub” of their “Sea Dweller” (the 42mm Pelagos). Some of the language is lost because they started with the bigger model. Yes, a bit boring, but a home run in my view. No date is better for the dial’s symmetry and rarely needed in a dive watch. I agree they should have started with this one, but better late than never. I think it’s the go-to watch for anyone thinking the new Rolex Sub or other dive watches too large. I get the “Pro” feel of the 42mm, but show me a Pelagos that used “once” its helium escape valve 😜. Owner of a recently purchased FXD here, previous owner of a classic Pelagos (ETA version bought in 2013 - sold in 2015), with a long history with vintage Tudor's (94010, 79090). I wouldn't trade my FXD for the 39mm Pelagos, for the same reasons you mentioned, but I find it fantastic nonetheless. And I am strongly considering getting one for my wife, to complement her blue dial Black Bay 36 for her sporting activities (swimming, sailing, hiking). I am surprised people do not see the filiation between this model and the mid-sized (36mm) Tudor Submariners or Mini-Sub's from the 80's and 90's. It's completely in the same spirit. If anything at all, Tudor are very consistent with their history.

Great mention about the mini-subs (totally slipped my mind) Y'know what has stood out to me on the 39mm, they've removed the framing around the plots for full ceramic plots instead and if you compare the FXD (or other models) with the square markers (1,2,4,5 etc) They look decidedly smaller. Maybe that's what threw me off on the dial? It was missing "something" and it could be the framing that was bugging me 😆

@@ID-Guy Finicky little hobby, isn't it? In other news, I just got a Bonetto Cinturini Zuludiver rubber NATO from Watch Gecko today, and I am happy to report it suits the FXD extremely well. They had the good idea to spring load all the keepers, which allows to turn it into a one layer strap, minimizing the height on the wrist. It is also far more pliable than the OEM rubber strap, meaning it doesn't stick out of the lugs like the OEM does. You should check it out.

Tudor is clearly listening to us. As an owner and daily wearer of the BB58, I do find it very elegant, with its case size, rose gold accents. It’s almost delicate in its design. I suppose, since I work in an office style environment but I also jump in our pool with my daughter right after work it really is the perfect daily wearer. That being said, I take my BB58 on all-day fly fishing trips where I’m casting, getting wet, banging it on rocks… etc and have found myself wanting something less shiny (glare is an enemy in fly fishing) and so started looking at the Omega 300M Bond (the titanium one). I also wanted something slightly less flashy when we travel overseas. Now that I see the 39mm Pelagos on rubber, it would serve as my real tool watch while my BB58 is now my “nicer” watch (even though it’s cheaper!).

It’s wierd how much we agree on things. It’s a lovely watch… which is exactly the issue!!! You’re bang on in that this is too “nice” a watch to retain any of the character of the line. On its own standards, the 39mm is great - beautifully made, filled with awesome tech at a great price with mass-appeal and will sell hugely. Problem is… the Pelagos line offered something truly different. Something decidedly “unmass-appealing” (not a word I know 😂) As I offered in our exchange in your (also bang on) Ranger critique, the Pelagos line and the Heritage Chronos are really for me the only pieces in modern Tudor that have any real interest and personality… everything else is a Rolex homage as a variant of the Bland Bay. This is a massive win for Tudor. The death of what we’ve known to be the Pelagos. Thank god for Breitling and IWC. 😇😉

I think you're bang on, agreed with pretty much all your points. The design language here isn't entirely cohesive. I think that fans who have been waiting for a Pelagos in BB58 dimensions are so excited about it finally existing, that they overlook these non-cohesive elements because they are enamoured and almost blinded to the downsides of this VERY hyped new Tudor. What many consider a preferable smaller diameter and thinner case height don't mask the loss of that true, concentrated Pelagos essence. This watch is basically like a slightly watered down Pelagos. It's is the blended whisky to its older sibling's single malt.

I wouldn't mind having the fully graduated bezel from the FXD on this one, but I think they've done a fairly good job here. They still have the square lume plots and those are essential. I don't think any watch should have snowflake hands without square lume plots. This combination makes sense and gives the watch purpose. And with the new size and sticking to titanium, it's pretty much a killer combo. The red writing.... maybe it's wrong, but it looks good. Also, Omega uses it on it's latest brown no-date Bond Seamaster, so why not on a Tudor?

It's going to sell 50:1 against the standard Pelagos, and will pull additional folks away from even the BB58 who don't want a "vintage feeling" watch. While this one isn't for me, they should have gone with a brushed ceramic bezel, not titanium. I'm not sure how well that'll hold up over the years to scratches. Good size for the vast majority of wearers out there.

Great insight and analysis as always! I think this Pelagos 39 is simply stunning! It “fixes” the things I personally don’t like about the Black Bay 58, namely the gilt hands and indeces and the clash of snowflake hands with round indeces. I fully accept I’m very much in the minority by not loving the regular Black Bay 58 but the heart wants what it wants (or doesn’t want in this case 😂). It is essentially the reissue of the Tudor Submariner in all but the titanium case and bracelet and the size surely means it will fly off AD shelves. You do raise a great point in how this watch being part of the Pelagos line is actually quite confusing. As you pointed out, the Pelagos was the professional diver range and the Black Bay represents the more vintage or dressy/desk diver end of the catalogue. Now the Pelagos is a large fully capable, HEV loaded, titanium cased dive watch, a civilian issue version of a watch designed for and with the Marine Nationale and now this 39mm variant which is, as you said shares more in common with the Black Bay line than the Pelagos. It’s similar to what happened to how I internally categorised the Black Bay Pro once Tudor announced the return of the Ranger. Surely the BB Pro would make more sense (at least in comparison to Rolex and the Explorer II it so resembles) if it was the Ranger Pro or Ranger II as opposed to being part of the Black Bay range 🤷‍♂️ Either way, I really want one! 😂

This new 39er doesn't meet the standards of the past. Like you I really like this new 39mm but no Ballerina would "Dare to Wear (TM)" my 42mm. I guess now they have their chance at 39mm. I was returning from Greece and I was wearing my Oris Aquis and I struck up a conversation with a fellow passenger who showed me his black Tudor Pelagos. We were then joined by a male airline steward who showed us his Rolex Pepsi GMT and it turned out to be an excellent flight. The following weekend I visited the local Tudor AD in Melbourne to see if I could get my hands on a Pelagos LHD for myself. When I arrived they had just put the new 39mm Ranger on display and I was blown away by its no nonsense black dial. I purchased the Ranger instead with the intention of returning again when the AD could source me a Pelagos LHD. This has turned out to be an excellent decision as I will now be buying the 39mm Pelagos.

Lets not underestimate the infuence of the Seiko SPB143, it has really impressed with the dark grey dial and bezel insert and I think that Tudor has seen the popularity of this with elements from the original Pelagos and have run with it. I absolutely adore this, but to make it perfect, i'd have it with a date complication and 300m of water resistance. Also, am I right in saying that this replaces the original Pelagos? I think it should complement the 42 mm version. Good review.

Brilliant, honest, and well thought out take on this new watch. It is not as professional as the original, or the FXD. It is definitely more at home on the beaches of Saint-Tropez than diving off a rig in the North Sea. But it has a place and I love it. Especially in these times of over inflated and at times, over rated Rolex’s (value for money) - I never thought I would be saying that 🤣. I think the design has hit a sweet spot. Addendum: it's funny how circular the logic of us watch addicts can be. I was on board with the smaller Pelagos, but a few key things happened which made me feel a bit more lukewarm since first posting this: 1. In my impatience, I bought a used Seamaster 2. The Black Bay 54 was announced 3. I actually tried on a full sized Pelagos at my local AD when inquiring about the BB54 and Pelagos 39 Now, I'm beginning to appreciate the "purity" of the full sized Pelagos and am beginning to see the 39mm as too much of a compromise.

When it comes to dimensions, this watch is small. When you're looking at a watch with a bezel your eyes usually focus on the dial. That is the reason why diving watches that are 40-42mm wear great even on smaller wrists. Black dials also appear smaller. Diving watches have to be a bit chunky for robustness and higher depth rating. It's actually the cool part in buying a diving watch. This watch really looks great but in the end it's not so special. The 42mm PELAGOS (it's actually a bit over 41mm) has much better specs but yet it's only 300 EUR above the 39mm. This actually means that the 39 mm is overpriced. If TUDOR decides to make a 42mm pelagos without a date window and less text on the dial everyone is going to forget about the 39.

I agree with your primary assertion that Tudor has watered down the tool aspects of the Pelagos line. That said I think 42mm case size may have put many off, me included. I love the intensity of the blue dial contrasted with the stark white indices and hands, gorgeous. Its just big. I think this one is, as you might have said, a run at the Sub. My crystal ball tells me we will probably see a 39mm blue dial in the very near future.

For me, this watch essentially ticks all the right boxes for what I’m looking for. I got very close to buying a BB58 but when I tried one on in person it felt more like a fashion accessory than a genuine tool. While I love the original Pelagos and its professional grade capabilities, it’s too large for my taste and rather chunky on my 6.25” wrist. The smaller proportions are a much welcomed change and although I may not need the 500m water resistance or helium escape valve, 200m is plenty and the G2 titanium will be perfect for the corrosive chemicals I handle at work. I don’t personally take issue with the decreased specs and despite the marketing on Tudor’s part this will still be a very capable watch nonetheless.

This new Pelagos has the Snowflake dial that the Black Bays have been crying out for. Whether aimed at the ‘Casual Wearer’ or the ‘Worker’ I think that this new version will prove very popular with many who cannot obtain a Submariner. It is a simple daily wearer like you said. How many professional divers still use a Watch alongside their Dive Computer? This new Pelagos could definitely fit the bill for a cheaper budget than a Submariner. No matter what the brand or the price there would always be something you would change after wearing a watch for a few months. It will become a classic in the years to come. I have the Pelagos LHD and I love it as a technical tool. This is the all round version (same approach from Rolex for the SeaDweller and the Submariner no date). It really looks different under the light and even the bezel glistens a bit under the light. I can also appreciate that the bezel is a bit wider than the case as it is roughly 39.8 mm….for someone with a 7.25” wrist, it doesn’t wear too small, especially compared to the Black Bay 58 with it’s much narrower bezel. Most of us will never be 100% happy with anything less than a perfect watch and a perfect watch does not exist, no matter what people say. There is nothing perfect at least at watches. Some pieces are very beautiful ones, designed by people and they tell the time. Now this Pelagos 39, is indeed an amazing release. Simple indeed and that is why I like it more than the old generation. The less is more sometimes. Mainly: The BB Pro and this one, have changed Tudor already. Just check both of them: they are (other than one being chubby - which does not bother me at all..) are simple. No shinny bling blang and luxurious. Just nice design and function. For me at least it works and hits all boxes compared to Breitling and Rolex (or even Omega..).

I am waiting for a Pelagos FXD and a Panda Chrono perhaps this new launch might speed up my wait. I agree with some of the early comments, it will be a very popular watch with different additions to come.

Would a Pelagos FXD 39 make sense as a future release?

"Black Bayified" is indeed a word, and I couldn't agree more. I really like this watch, and they're gonna sell a ton of them, but it's just not for me. For me personally, any watch under 40mm in titanium just feels too insubstantial in presence and weight. 39mm is a great size, but I'd go for a regular BB58 over this for those reasons. If I ever got a Pelagos, it would have to be the regular 42 or the FXD. The Pelagos is, and should be, a TOOL watch, and this new release is definitely not that. As per usual, I agree with you completely LOL. Great video!

Thank you Floyd. It's a real pedantic opinion of mine BUT my beloved tool watch, the last bastion of utility-driven-professionalism is now flashy (grumble grumble) 😆

As I'm sure others are saying, I think this will be the no-date Sub for those who can't afford, or can't get (at retail) the Sub.

Good morning Mr Guy, I don't think that Tudor has "Black Bayified" it so much as "Rolexed" it. It's moved away from the hard core tool watch design to the luxury tool watch design, rather like the Sub has done. It's immensely capable but has more of a luxury character. The advertising suggests that it will be marketed as a unisex watch... I like it, but it won't be replacing my Black Bay 58. Thanks for another thought provoking video. 😀

I agree Robert, it is a completely different watch than the BB58. Measurements, color, material, clasp, bracelet, font, indices, weight, bezel, and crystal. The watch looks nothing like a BB58, a complete opposite. One is a dated homage of the 58 and the other one a new experiment with contemporary Tudor-Sub vibes. I'm starring at it right now as it sits on my wrist.

@@gito4130 Ah, so you pulled the trigger! You're clearly delighted with it, which is as it should be: it's a fine piece. For me, I would love to have one, but can't justify the expense with the 58 sitting there. Congratulations on your purchase. I hope you didn't have to wait too long... Happy New Year Gito 🎉 🙂
