Did the Inmates Who Escaped Alcatraz Survive?

Sixty years ago, three Alcatraz inmates pulled off the impossible: they broke out. Now, new age-progressed images of the convicted bank robbers could crack wide open the puzzling mystery. The escapees made papier-mâché heads with human hair to trick guards into believing they were sleeping in their cells. In 1979, the FBI declared the men drowned in the frigid waters of the San Francisco Bay. However, the case was reopened after a letter was reportedly written by one of the escapees.

The intelligent way to go about this would be to give John Anglin amnesty and free medical attention in exchange for his story of how they planned and executed their escape.

As I remember hearing the story growing up, they escaped, but the police said that they had drowned, in part to protect the reputation of Alcatraz as an escape proof prison and partly to prevent panic amongst the people of San Francisco. The following mother's day, the brothers mother received a bouquet of flowers and every mothers day after that. When their mother died, two 'uncommonly large' women attended the funeral. They stayed in the back, dressed completely in black wth the obligatory hat and veils, ( as was customary in the day) so no one could clearly see their faces and they left as soon as someone approached them. Did they survive? I like to think that they did and then they did the sensible thing and stayed out of trouble.

That last statement spoke volumes in my opinion. They had enough common sense to never get in trouble again I'm pretty sure the people. Lived out the rest of their days trying to make sure they didn't get in any trouble. Truthfully after so many years I say let him go it was a bank robbery.

I also think too that the investigation was reopened in 2003 where they found police reports that there was paddles and rain jackets with materials like the waterproof glue they used to keep everything together found off that island near the prison and that their plan was to go there steal a car and then drive away which there was reports of a stolen car with 3 men inside and then another car saying they were ran off road by the same car with 3 people also inside. So I think they made it and also think they just stayed out of trouble especially considering the IQ of the one prisoner. If they can plan this with months of not being noticed or suspected by a single guard for breaking out then they can evade law enforcement without ever being caught. They broke the laws they did to get what they needed to they got it and probably realized they never want to go back they escape which they had done before but this time with the help of others I think they knew what to do to not be caught. Maybe the 3 of them also needed each other for everything in prison and after to workout the way they wanted.

When John Anglin sent that letter 9 years ago, they should’ve pardoned him then. If he was already bad off with cancer, more than likely he is still not alive now. It would have been great to hear his story about what happened when they made it to the water and then eventually to the shore. They were in Alcatraz for armed bank robbery, and I’m not saying that’s okay, but they could’ve committed much worse crimes. At least we would’ve finally knew the truth!!

He was very sick with sepsis. My late wife was in the hospital at the same time. May she rest in piece. This was about 6 years ago when I heard the story. Very cool story, and yes, the three men did escape. On an episode of Mythbusters where the crew did an episode of Alcatraz, and they discovered that it was possible to escape. Where they left is still entirely TBD. However, the reason why they never said anything is because they're technically still escaped convicts, I mean, they broke out of prison when they should have served time. And I heard that if they were caught, they can still get sent to prison. Just saying on what I heard.

In Singapore, we had a similar incident back in 2008 when convicted terrorist Mas Selamat escaped a prison by turning on the tap of the prison toilet to trick the guards into thinking that he is washing his hands, while he climbed out of the window and walked to the straits of Johor to swim all the way to Johor, Malaysia. So basically the whole world started to trace him and feared that he went to the middle east to meet with al qaeda but Singaporeans speculated that he drowned while swimming across the sea. But a few years later, Malaysian authorities arrested him in a house in a village located in... Johor, Malaysia. He was then extradited back to Sg where he is still incarcerated as of today.

What made it brutal? I went there last year and it seems because it's so isolated maybe that can make it scary. The prisoners were fed well (better food than other prisons) and got to eat as much food as they wanted. The only thing I saw that may have been brutal was the small cells, beds, toilets and sinks. It's an old, outdated prison so things were smaller back then. No executions took place there either. Ironic thing about Alcatraz is in the movie The book of Eli, the protagonist ends up there at the end.
