Did the Disciples Think Jesus Was a Demon or a Ghost? Aramaic Bible Study Matthew

Did the Disciples Think Jesus was a Ghost?
The following is from my Aramaic Bible Study series, where we investigate the Syriac traditions and how they can shed light on whether or not Jesus was initially perceived by the disciples as a ghost when He walked on water, as recorded in Matthew's Gospel account (Matthew 14:25-26). We examine the Peshitta as well as the Old Syriac Curetonian Gospels and the Old Syriac Sinaitic Palimpsest.
I read the passage in both the Western accent written in the Serto script and commonly found among the Syriac Orthodox, Maronite Catholic, and Syrian Catholic communities (and historically the Antiochian Orthodox). I also read the text in the Eastern accent found among the Ancient/Assyrian Church of the East, the Chaldean Catholics, and the Syriac Orthodox and Syriac Catholic communities of Northern Iraq.

Wonderful video. Though I was so hopeful you were going to reveal the idiom used in verse 26 but you didn't. Regarding the disciples thinking they saw a spirit: Fear of spirits is so strong in the Near East that an innocent man walking by the seashore or cemetery may be mistaken for a spirit. In Assyria, when a man whom the family couldn't identify enters the house at night, he will be tested by sticking him with a large needle so they will know he is not a spirit. The belief is that when a needle touches an evil spirit, it is supposed to change into a donkey. Jesus disciples were afraid because of their beliefs in spirits. But Jesus promptly assured them it was he and not a spirit wishing to enter their boat.
