We absolutely cannot wait to show you what we have planned for Oliver's Birthday month. Although our hearts felt so heavy, we were thankful to have a fun errand to run yesterday. Please know that we continue to think of those of you who were affected by the chaos and tragedy this week. Don't forget to spread encouragement to any who might need it.

The endocrinologist is the doctor who specialized in the endocrine system... and I think it is the coolest of all doctors. The endocrine system is composed by all glands in the body that are responsiblr to produce all hormones that regulate the body funtions. You may know that nerves are essencial for moving the skeleton and feel anything... well the endocrine system is as important but almost at the cellular level. It coordinates the function of all organs. I hope I was able to explain it clearly 😎

LUI SA - just to add on for more info. Yes your thyroid is part of this system. Also your ovaries/testicles and basically anything that produces hormones. I have something called bilateral hyperaldosteronism -> my adrenal glands (they kinda sit on top of your kidneys like little hats) produce to much aldosterone which in turn gives me high blood pressure as it is basically a salt hormone. For reference, the first time my blood pressure was checked at age 12, it was 180/120. Normal is around 120/80.

All your glands and hormones are part of the endocrine system and they have to stay in balance. Some hormones trigger other glands to release their hormones. And then that will trigger other releases in other parts of the body. The level of hormones is always changing and in a constant up and down but in a healthy body that fluctuation isn't noticeable because they are so mild. It's when they hit the extremes that there are problems. It does the same thing as the nervous system only slower. So an example of the nervous system would be you touch something hot and the nerves send a message to your body - and your brain sends a message back to the part of the body that touched some hot to move your hand and you react. That happens in fractions of a second. The endocrine system is slower. In your case the pancreas releases insulin - cells take up glucose and the liver turns it into glycogen - the blood glucose levels drop - the pancreas releases glycogen - the liver breaks down the glycogen into glucose releasing that back into the blood and the blood glucose levels rise. If your only dropping the the pancreas is producing too much insulin and there is a problem most likely with the liver not converting the glycogen to glucose. And this would be due to your liver becoming more ischemic (dying).

How dare you forget us!! LOL So happy you found us though! That would have been pricey! EEK!!! Happy you have a new med for emergencies Mary!! Severe drops in blood sugar can be sooooo incredibly dangerous (just likes spikes), so it's wonderful to know you have a little-added help in your arsenal if you do need it!

One thing an endocrinologist is, that it is for someone who is a type one diabetic. This means that their pancreas is not working and they get high sugar. They take insulin and test by using a meter. You can also get low too. I have type one diabetes since I was in 6th grade. I am now in 11th grade. I have had it for 5 years.

An endocrinologist treats the endocrine system, which basically means they study and treat hormonal disorders. My brother and late fiancé had diabetes and they saw an endocrinologist at times.

Both of you made me laugh, asking about what in endocrinologist is. I've personally been seeing a endocrinologist since I was 10 years old for underactive thyroid issues. In endocrinologist primarily helps patients that have issues with invalidating organs that are to do with the endocrine system. So Mary you were correct with your answer. This is a new one, I've never heard or know anyone to see an endocrinologist for blood sugar drops.

Back in high school I was into more biomedical sciences (I study chemistry now) but I got to work with mice and do research on behavioral neuroendocrinology (basically seeing how concentrations of endocrines affect your behavior, specifically on how male hormones affected aggression).

Hopefully something that might help; my mother is a diabetic and I'm prediabetic and since I was really little (I'm 23 now), I've learned how to treat her low blood sugars (and my own). If you keep orange juice around, or little bottles of it if you don't drink it often, it really helps bring blood sugars back up relatively quickly. Not trying to tell you what to do, just thought I'd offer a little tidbit. Hope this might help a smidge!

I just recently got a CGM. I have CFRD and an (unpleasant) mix of highs and lows (my endocrinologist and I are still working on an insulin plan that works). If you're able to get one, I highly highly highly recommend it. My endocrinologist was thrilled that I got one. I have the Dexcom G5 and it's absolutely amazing. It connects to my phone and then consequently to my Apple Watch so I can keep an eye on sugars even when I can't just look at my phone. It also gives you some idea of where your sugars are headed which is super helpful in preventing lows and treating before it gets to the point where you're symptomatic. Definitely one of the best decisions I've made (and also...new medical equipment is like Christmas sooooo that was a plus)

I just wanted to let you know, that I have had to use the glucagon kit once in my entire 35 years as a type 1 Diabetic, it does make you ill. I know it did with me, and I've read that many others get that way too. Just for a bit. Just a friendly heads up!
