    Bought the same model about 6 weeks ago, had similar issues with the stock tuners: I didn't have a "ping" sound, but I experienced the same poor tuning accuracy with all the free-wheeling, and poor stability. Upgraded to the Gotoh tuners (thanks to your advice and demonstration!), and now the tuning accuracy is great and very stable. Another benefit, which I hadn't anticipated, is that now I'm getting far less noise from unpicked strings.

    Me too! Besides, you cannot change strings gauges, tuners, and not expect a setup after it's done. Nut can also now be an issue if the strings or even one string doesn't fit as well.

    I’ve owned the FR S version for about two years now, with a locking nut I can’t comment on the tuners. In terms of everything else it’s been rock solid through various climates. In fact, it’s so solid it amazes me when temps change through the seasons and all my other guitars require a truss rod adjustment, but this one stays stable.

    The Schecters are great especially for the price you pay (even more so if you wait for a sale or look for B Stock) and I love the SLS Elite you have here and the PT ones as well. I luckily did not have these tuner issues (although I do personally love Graph Tech Ratio tuners) and would have changed them as well. Something to note ( at least especially lately ) is if you buy a Suhr new and especially a custom build you get crushed at resale. I have had 3 Suhrs. They are good guitars but I could buy 2 or 3 Schecters for the prices I paid new for them. Although I like Suhr and feel they are well made after getting the Schecters setup they just play easy and are fantastic. I now have NO Suhrs and 4 Schecters and a Ted Stevenson (which the build quality is fantastic and since you're in Canada you should really try one) and I couldn't be happier. On a couple of the Schecters I did put my own electronics / pickups in for my own taste benefit but I can't recommend Schecter enough. Other ones worth note where you get a lot of bang for the buck is Ibanez Prestige and Charvel Pro Mod. Great video and glad you revisited this after spending some time with it. Was fun to hear about what you like and didn't like. Will be cool to see the next review on it when you have had a chance to spend more time with the new tuners installed and a proper re-setup.

    Your nut needs the string slots widened. Thats why the tuners dont do anything. Your luthier should have caught that right away. Its very common on new guitar that come setup for 9-42.

    Thanks for the video! Finally someone is honest about these tuners! When I got my Schecter C-1 Evil Twin, I too was surprised that the tuners were just so rubbish. I even thought it was a defect, but when I asked the manager who sold the guitar, he honestly said that the empty freewheel and loss of tension is normal behaviour of Schecter tuners. I swapped them for Gotoh SG381 mg-t and am now completely satisfied. Plus, they look awesome! Not a big deal but it's still strange that Schecter didn't put good tuners on their top-of-the-line model right away

    Nice playing. My new Schecter Diamond Series C1 has Grover tuners - surely, Grovers are solid tuners, mine work perfectly. But I live in California and we have NO issues with frets, necks, or weather/winter, etc. I change tunings and it stays in Drop or 1/2 step, etc. I'm sure you know if you go lower than pitch and back up, the tuners will tighten up and if you change the tuners, change the string gauges, modify the headstock/tuners, that all affects the tension of the neck, you no doubt need a neck/setup adjustment. Typically, in my decades of playing the G string is the first to go out of tune. Might even be a nut issue as the heavier gauge strings may not fit as well as the ones it was setup for. I think if you had the setup, tuners, and string changes done at once with a solid tech, you'd have an easier time with the changes. One point I'd like to make is unless specified, guitars are setup up for Standard Tuning, along with the strings, nut, and tuners they come with. Change one thing, it can affect others.

  • @LonelyRocker

    Thanks!! Climate is a huge factor. Mine was setup perfectly for a drop C tuning. Custom string gauge to create the perfect tension, nut adjusted etc. Then I went and changed the tuners. I wish it happened the other way round but I got frustrated not being able to find the tuners I wanted and needed to get the guitar in game shape. 2 weeks later I found the tuners ;). I'll get ti setup again. But now that it has settled it seems much better and is playing great. Thanks for weighing in!

    The tuning changing by pushing hard on the neck like what you do in the video can be done on any guitar. Try it with your Suhr, it’ll do the same thing. It doesn’t have anything to do with the neck size, and neither does tuning stability. I’ve owned various Ibanez Prestige guitars that have even thinner necks than the Shecter (17mm at first fret) and the tuning is always rock solid. I’ve had Prestige guitars with the locking Edge trem where it stays in tune for months. I even shipped one overseas and when I took it out of the case it was still in tune. Thanks for the insights into the guitar, really helpful!

    You have the perfect guitar to learn how to setup your guitar. Fixed bridge, locking tuners. The ping you heard is usually binding at the nut. But the slippage afterwards showed exactly what the issue was: The gears wore out in your old tuners. That was the click. It happens. If you liked the old buttons, you can put them on the new tuners. Although I like the smaller ones, less crowded. The neck is skinny, it will definitely bend when you're applying pressure. Most guitars do, and many guitarists use it in performances. It's a cool trick to grab the headstock and pull back. But yeah, turning the truss rod as the climate changes is something you just get used to, necks do expand and contract. Regardless of the wood used. Baked maple is going to be more stable, but even that will shrink over time. But yeah, doing your own setup at home is so easy. You have the perfect guitar to get started. Paying someone money to kiss the frets with a file or turn a few screws seems crazy, man. Especially since your guitar has the initial/first setup done.

  • @LonelyRocker

    @LonelyRocker

    5 ай бұрын

    I can tell you 100% the ping is not the nut. It’s definitely the gears slipping in the tuners. And it’s been doing that since new. I actually recently got some cheap guitars to practise set ups. I actually do my own basic setups already. I just don’t have a proper file kit for frets and the nut.

  • @christopherhorton4634

    @christopherhorton4634

    5 ай бұрын

    @@LonelyRocker Oh, I think you misunderstood me. It is USUALLY binding at the nut. But in your case, the gears inside had worn out. Which is 100% on Schecter. The tell was turning the peg, and it was getting no response. I was just saying it is usually the nut binding. 👍 And that's good! Maintenance is part of being a guitarist. Once you get into it, you'll be mad at yourself for paying people to do such minimal work. I know I was! My tour tech was a very cool guy that showed me what he was doing if an issue came up on one of my guitars. Playing Florida one night, and the cool mountains the next, wreaks havoc on wood. But now we have KZread. If you're learning, the Stew Mac channel is your best resource. There's plenty of other channels, including my own company. But they are tried and true. They also make the best tools, in my opinion. Good luck, and have fun with it!

    So I have 8 schecters now and a few of them have Schecter locking tuners (KM-7 MK1, Banshee Mach 6, KM-6 Hybrid) my KM-7 is literally like an evertune without the evertune 😂 I almost never have to adjust or tune that guitar and it's 10 years old! It's just solid. My Banshee and my hybrid, on the other hand; both have the EB compensated nut. They both tend to go a little sharp after sitting for awhile, but then once I retune and start playing, they lock in. I'm not sure I can attribute it to tuners, or the nut. Over time it's gotten less prevalent, and I'm running them both in D stan/Drop C 10-52 gauge. So I'm not sure if maybe you just have a bad set of tuners or maybe it's the nut slots? Either way I think Schecter tuners are just as good as any other.

I thought it was the gear ratio, but it might have been the same issue you are experiencing. I’m a big fan of Schecter, owning four of them. I enjoy them as much as my Gibson guitars. They’re locking tuners not so much. $80 seems like a small price to make the guitars completely awesome. I have a Schecter KM7 with Schecter Locking tuners and they do not suffer any of the issues you have on yours. My guess is that you had bad luck and got some tuners that were not properly constructed. Another thing, you may need a tech to look over the nut to make sure its 'cut' properly. A lot of tuning issues are due to improperly cut nuts, especially when you change string gauge its an important part to give attention to.

    That truly is a personal preference. When I got mine I wanted a hard tail because I wanted this to be super reliable for recording. Didn’t anticipate the other issues. Now I’m thinking I might want a guitar with a tremolo system. Really it comes down to what you currently need.

    Curious, did you try contacting Schecter to see about getting replacement tuners? Regarding the neck, though slightly different as I have the trem version, I have not experienced any issues. Also, in my experience with trying to reuse the strings like you did when swapping the tuners, rarely works. Playing on the strings, the frets leave subtle dents where they contact the string. The loosening, taking off and retightening of the strings, rarely are you able to get the strings to go back to the exact same place from where they started, and your strings will buzz and be wonky.

  • @LonelyRocker

    I had a similar pinging issue from a set of Guyker locking tuners - it was the locking mechanism itself being unable to fully grasp the string. It'd lock enough to hold the string in place, but as you put tension on it, the lock kind of slipped and the tuning dropped Edit: since the G string is still snagging, I'd drop some graphite in the nut slot if you haven't already - it could be binding up there instead of at the tuner

If we are talking about actually OLD Grover’s, they seem to hold up for decades. But stuff since the 2000’s just doesn’t seem to hold up. Have you noticed anything like this? I’ve been using hip shots for replacements and they are awesome. I also have a mint condition ltd ec1000 from either 03 or 05 (sry can’t remember) and it has sperzel locking tuners. Nice re-review. It's funny how our perception of a darling new instrument changes after the first year. Schecter has always been a surprising value, and made instruments that play great and sound great. I think the reason Schecter is always a surprise value is in how they smartly weigh options. They are saying, "'Tuners are easy to replace, so we will focus our efforts on irreplaceable things that make this guitar a keeper for life." Like a neck that feels good in your hand. Like active pickups that zero in on the voice of the target genre. That's smart. Flexible neck messing with your tuning? It's the trade off for 24 frets, high neck access and a super slim neck heel. Some people actually like that waver you get when you woggle the neck. I kind of do. A lot of SG players in rock history certainly made great use of that. Thinking of Pete Townsend here.... a long time Schecter endorser! LOL Cheers Dan!

    There Is to much talk in guitar community about gear,it Is all about pedals,guitars,amps,tone Very few acctualy enjoy Music...i have a feeling that for most guitar players collecting stupid gear Is more pleasure than making Music. That,s way todays Music sucks

    It's funny you say that....I think you're right. I feel like people have very little interest to hear the music in these videos...they seem to skip over it for the talking...I hope that doesn't mean my music sucks ;)))))

    I'm enjoying the Fishmans. They cover ground my other guitars can't. But it's taste and I know they don't appeal to everyone.

    I have a MIK black Jack single cut, neck is super stable and tuners have never had a problem. Living in Indonesia with daily temperature and humidity changes depending whether the Air-con is on or off.
