Did Moving on a Canal Narrowboat Save my Mental Health? Ep. 123.

Did moving on a canal narrowboat save my mental health? It was meant to, but almost eighteen months after we sold our house and business to move on a canal narrowboat, has it worked?
We cruise on the Grand Union Canal from Hemel Hempstead to Berkhamsted where Colin uncovers the history of the Rose's Lime Juice factory, the last man to be executed for highway robbery, a sad tale of the drowned lock-keeper on Christmas Day, and the Bourne End rail disaster that happened alongside the canal.
Catch-up on every vlog, from the beginning, in order, as we explore Britain by Narrowboat:

Shaun and Colin, I can only speak for myself, me being the funny, outgoing one was for people outside of my immediate family to see. As soon as I got home I would be exhausted from being funny and cheerful all day. I would go home to my safe place and I would switch off my load from the day and my introverted husband and I would switch personalities. Our kids remember him as the fun and silly parent. It wasn’t like I was a zombie, I was still fun, but I didn’t have to be when I was with my immediate family. (I was a happy school teacher-that is very stressfu) I went through stuff growing up that shaped me as an adult. I’m now realizing it wasn’t all awful, it’s just the awful parts burn a hole in my memory. My loving and accepting husband saved me. But I know I must drive him crazy at times when my anxiety explodes and I just want to run. I don’t know if I could do this without him. We’re in a great place right now, thank goodness. I don’t know your religious background, but I will send out a prayer of peace of mind for you both.

Mental Health is one of the most maligned health issues you can have. No one can see it, it isn't a physical disability so people can't always accept it as a disability. So glad that you are able to share some of your experiences, I am sure your story will help many others. Love your vlog and look forward to seeing you every week. Otis is growing like a weed! Guys I've said this before, but I truly love all the little historical tidbits you give. Colin I'm sorry the canal life isn't helping as much as y'all hoped for. But I'm so glad you have found someone to help. I've never met you(and probably never will. The ocean is a bit too big to swim. Hi Boyz! I have msged you before, but I wanted to speak directly to Colin. My partner and I are both bi-polar, and my partner Hampus has aspergers. I wanted to offer to you a little nugget we've learned along the way ... life can be a right mess. A HOT mess as my partner likes to call himself. But its true whether neuro typical or not, we all muddle through as best we can. We tend to wind ourselves up, offering explanations to others for the the things we do and reasons for the way we are... but often we dont even know these reasons for ourselves. Hampus and I decided together, that sort of like when you're trying to cross a river by stepping on some slippery stones... you're out there up to your ankles in water... best just to keep on making your way.. no sense in turning around as you'd be no better off. The future allways can be brighter and even more so if there's someone to reach out a hand and give ya a pull up out of the water before you get too wet. I dont know much, but I PROMISE, I ABSOLUTELY promise that ALTHOUGH it might not ever get 100% better... it DOES GET EASIER. You cant ever know today ... how resilient you will be tomorrow. I didnt know that I could ever have made it to today, but I did, and with my partner ... we took two slightly cracked and sinking lives and managed to build the foundation of a solid brilliant one TOGETHER. I wish you both well and much love and hugz. My apologies for rambling like a nutter, its what I do. But I mean it will all sincerity. Be good. -JP and Hampus

I love that you are so open about your mental health issues. Mine probably stem from childhood trauma. I’ve never had any counselling, just medication. I find crafting things for other people helps me a lot. I was a nurse for over 35 years so maybe the desire to help others is just inbuilt. People don’t really get why I like making things for individuals and charities but it gives me a sense of who I am. I recently started watching videos like yours because they give me an interest outside of my life that I can really enjoy and live vicariously. Living on a narrow boat would be my idea of heaven. I’ve always loved them but now I’m older I think I’d need a wide beam! 🤣🤣🤣

Colin, it's wonderful that you talk openly about your mental health. An American friend of my nephew is a psychologist and she says the problem here in the UK is that no-one seeks help until they are actually 'broken' and then it's a longer journey to fix. And you're so right about how it affects the people you are with - my 'wobble' happened following redundancy followed by long-term unemployment and my husband described it as having to watch someone you love dearly being tortured and you're unable to do anything about it. Hopefully, you're helping people to see it's ok and that seeking help is a positive thing so they do it earlier. My faith in you folks to think differently will hopefully change this state of things for people. Sending you *much* love, and hoping that Shaun is feeling a lot better now xxxx

Hi, Colin. It’s me again. For 60 years, I have been challenged with depression. I still have my days, but with a daily Mindfullness practice, I don’t fight it or judge myself anymore. After many councillors, I am lucky, finally, to have happened upon a psychologist who is trained in ‘parts work’. It has taught me that the reactions to triggers were reactions that I had to bury at the time, in childhood. So the reactions are at the age I was at time of the trauma. You can google it. I am happy and blessed now. My authentic self.

Colin I want to thank you for talking about your mental health. I watched you talk about your feelings and everything you described I see in my wife. She has always said she had issues but she could never describe them to me. But watching you and you and her have the same type issues. It really helped me to better understand her. It has really made our relationship better as I say I can better understand where she is coming from.

Hi from Oz, another great video boys. I just want to say to Colin, please keep talking. I've been married to the same lady for nearly 50 yrs & have no regrets at all but I grew up in a generation in which the majority didn't understand same sex relationships, or want to understand. As an apprentice in the building trade I saw a couple of guys (not a couple) ridiculed but these were two of the best people I met during my training. They were always there to help & assist me unlike some of the others that were doing the ridiculing. What I learnt at that age was that everyone deserves happiness & I believe that you two loving & caring guys are something this world desperately needs. My wife & I now look out for every new video & are working our way though all your previous works. Hang in there Colin, we all need you mate & we're so glad you have a partner like Shaun (& Otis) to help you.

Thank you for sharing the fact that people like Shaun that are close to, and support, their loved ones with mental health problems often get forgotten about and the effect it can have on them. They can often feel helpless and feel they should be able to know / anticipate / help more / understand etc. Shaun no doubt has been your brick all these years, much love to him x --and love to you for sharing and raising awareness x --and not forgetting love to Otis who will give you both unconditional love no matter what x

Thank you for recognizing the loved ones who support. Sometimes we are so focused on the person who has a medical condition that the care givers get sick from the stress. BTW, mental health is a health matter just like cancer. The person didn’t bring it on themself, everyone involved wants to cure it, but it is a hard, frustrating, long haul. As long as you recognize that you need help, you’ll find it and do well. Remember to tell each other that you share your love and life together because you want to; and not because you have to.

I think that society, both there and abroad are finally getting to the point that it's ok to talk about mental health. Lord knows there is nothing scary about talking about, but people seem to think that it is such this taboo subject. So thank you. I too recently have been trying to keep up with my own mental health....not so much any strong issues, but I've been really looking at my work/life balance and trying to get those scales tipping more toward the life side of it. You don't hide them, you share as much as you can with us, that takes a lot of guts mate. I hear you Colin. My daughter is 17 and an aspie struggling with anxiety. We can't get her in CAMHS because they decided her anxiety wasn't bad enough to be worth helping and the wait lists are too long. Adult services have told her to go away until she turns 18 so we're doing the same as you paying for her to get help privately. It's great to see you giving this airtime because mental health services are so underfunded. Sending love xx

My 15 year-old daughter has taken a sudden interest in your vlogs - nothing to do with Otis, of course! Good to hear you talking about your mental health problems, and I'm very glad that my few quid a month is going to such a good cause. Talking is key, from personal experience. I think many of us actually know what's causing our problems at some subconcious level, but can't access it or deal with it, and talking to someone (someone who knows what they are doing!) helps us get access to all that stuff and face it, and start the healing process. Got to be the right person though. I've had two experiences with this, the first was really eye-opening and helped me change my life completely (although I still have to keep a watch on myself to stop me slipping back into the old ways), but the second was with a therapist who I just couldn't connect to, and it was worse than a waste of time. I had to cancel the sessions early - they were doing more harm than good.

I’ve been married to my husband for 47 years (who has more mental issues than I do because frankly I think if we live long enough we all do). It’s hard for the one with the issues but also for the one with less issues. It’s hard to understand each other’s worlds sometimes. Just hang on to each other and stay committed and supportive of each other. As we age it gets better. Maybe we feel like somethings aren’t as important to fret over as we age and know our time is running out. Concentrate on what really matters and let go of the things that don’t. The way Otis reacted when Shaun said “you can’t say that” was perfect and priceless!! 🐾😂 Another wonderful vlog, and great to hear that you’re able to access support wherever you are, so very important. Hope the trraaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiinns provided some welcome distractions too, and slobbery kisses from Otis keep you both smiling too 😊
