Even though it was a lie, the width specification was perfectly reasonable, because they asked how it fit through the door, and then asked how big it was, so obviously hes going to specific how wide it was, because animals dont walk through doors sideways.

I know, I would have been so angry in Mile's place if they (rightfully) called it a lie for such a ridiculous and erroneous reason and then be all smug about it

The reason he described the hippo's width rather than the length is that they were talking about whether it could fit through doorways prior!
He delivered that "robust bed" part with the exact same pause, lean-in and stare that Norm MacDonald used to do
I saw "Miles Jupp" in the title and knew it was going to make me laugh. Not disappointed.
I love how miles laughs
The width thing was legitimate, they brought up the problem of the hippo squeezing through the door, and the width of the hippo in this case that matters.
Cape Town is not known for hippos, except for the couple near Strandfontein, and they don't do house visits.

I'm not an expert, but I would think that if a hippo was in your room you would smell it. Also its breathing must be a tad heavier than that of a woman.
