(03 April 2024, 10:35 a.m.) Not addressed here is Joshua in Moab, it is Joshua in Canaan. In Scripture Joshua is present when Israel conquers Moab before invading Canaan. Archaeological digs at Heshbon and nearby Elealeh revealed neither site was earlier than Iron Age I (ca. 1200-1100 BC). This would seem to work against the Israelite Conquest of Canaan being ca. 1406 BC based on 1 Kings 6:1, nor can it be earlier than Iron Age I. That is to say the Conquest of Canaan cannot be in the 15th century BC or the 13th century BC or Late Bronze Age. The following source for Heshbon and Elealeh: Burton MacDonald. 2000. _East of the Jordan, Territories and sites of the Hebrew Scriptures_ American Schools of Oriental Research. Boston. MacDonald, p. 116: "The Hebrew Elealeh is preserved in the archaeological site of El'-Al located 3 km northeast of Tall Hisban...The site of El-'Al is impressive since many walls and building foundations are still clearly visible. Though Glueck found no Bronze Age sherds at the site, he did find numerous Early Iron I-II...There appears to be little doubt that the archaeological ruin of El'-Al is the location of the biblical site of Elealeh." MacDonald on Heshbon p. 93: "A problem with the location of biblical Heshbon at Tall Hisban is the apparent discrepancy between the archaeological evidence and the biblical account of the Israelite capture of the site from the Amorite king Sihon...The site's conquest as narrated in the Bible, would have taken place, according to traditional dating, around the end of the thirteenth and beginning of the twelvth centuries BC. However, the archaeological evidence does not not support the location of an Amorite capital city at Tall Hisban in either the Late Bronze or Early Iron Ages." Some Late Bronze Age sherds were found at Tall Hisban, but no remains of walls or building structures. MacDonald has noted the period best reflecting Tall-Hisban being worthy of being called a "Capital City" is the 7th through 6th centuries BC: MacDonald on Tall Hisban, p.92: "Although there is evidence of the site's habitation during the tenth-eighth centuries, the best-preserved Iron Age remains date to the seventh-eighth centuries. The archaeological record indicates "a general prosperity and continued growth, probably clustered around a fort."...this settlement may have come to a violent end..." MacDonald's Conclusion: pp. 4-5: "My experience in the field of Near Eastern archaeology has led me to the general conclusion that the biblical stories about Transjordan places and events best fit into the Iron II period and later...the narrative of Israel's defeat of Sihon and capture of his capital city of Heshbon would fit better the archaeological history of this site during the Iron II rather than the Late Bronze-Iron I period..." MacDonald suggests the book of Joshua was most likely composed in either the late 7th or 6th century BC as it reflects that world's sites, as excavated, by archaeologists.

Very interesting discussion. Idk if I believe there was ever such a conquest. I tend to believe the Israelites were just one of the many "ites" who inhabited the region. Thank you Dr Hawkins, thank you Jacob

Good, informative interview. Obviously he views history through a biblical lens. But I think Dr. Hawkins provides an honest account. My own view is that we are talking about events written down six hundred years or more after they supposedly occurred. So the specifics are unlikely to be reliable. But I do believe it's likely there is a germ of truth in the story.

My take too. Names, places and time is totally messed up in the bible. So the question appears: for what reason? And who benefits?

@@RealUvane the whole purpose of the document is to create identities. The Old Testament creates the identity of the Hebrews. And the New Testament creates the identity of the Christians. So they are the beneficiaries.

I think these stories about Jerico. etc. are injected mythology. God does not command vice. He condemns aggression. Self defense and to defend ones ability to worship God are the only justified reasons to fight. We are simply supposed to submit to God alone and God wants people to freely come to this decision. God sent a messenger in 1988, Dr. Rashad Khalifa, and he was a strict scripturist. He advocated the worship of God alone without making a big deal of any of the prophets or messengers or saints. God does everything according to what each of us incur by our righteousness or wickedness. Peace.

Great presentation, factual, understated, with ample explanation of the context, literary and narrative conventions, interwoven with archeological data and, of course, hypotheses and interpretations.
