I love teddy but there’s no way francis didn’t win rounds 3,4, 7 and 8. They’re 100% francis rounds. There’s a few rounds in there where fury landed a couple of more jabs but francis landed more power shots. They could have gone to francis. Best you can score the right for fury is 95-94. Easily could have gone the other way. Boxing has always been based on damage.

Legendary boxing trainer Teddy Atlas doesn’t see any controversy in Tyson Fury’s win over Francis Ngannou. Ngannou took WBC champion Fury to a split decision in their crossover boxing match this past Saturday in Saudi Arabia, an outcome he disagrees with. The former UFC heavyweight champion knocked down Fury in Round 3 and stood toe to toe with him for all 10 rounds. Atlas gave Fury Rounds 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 9, and 10. He scored Round 3 10-8 for Ngannou, and the only other round he gave him was Round 8. It was Round 7 that Atlas struggled to score, finally deciding on a 10-10 draw. Atlas’ overall tally favored Fury for being the busier fighter. “My final score: 97-93 for Mr. Fury,” Atlas said on his show, “THE FIGHT with Teddy Atlas.” “And like I said in my comments, lots of posturing, feinting, half jabs, lot of looking, could have been more even rounds possibly, but I know it’s an honest one, because I’m saying what I believe.” Fury insisted that he did not underestimate Ngannou, but many observers believed he looked off. Atlas views the fight as an upset because Ngannou pulled off the unexpected, but he thinks Fury didn’t take him entirely seriously. “Physically he did; he was in good shape,” Atlas said. “Good enough shape. But mentally he didn’t. He didn’t. I’m going to put my bottom dollar, and he won’t make an excuse. I give him credit for that. And I’m not making an excuse. Ngannou deserves every bit of credit, but there’s no doubt in my mind that Tyson Fury was compromised in a way that, as a human being, that he too thought it was going to be a fun thing, a money grab. “It was going to be where he does what he wants. He wants to end it; he ends it. He wants to play, he wants to do an Ali shuffle, whatever he wants to do, he could do it. There was going to be nothing to worry about. … You can’t say it’s going to be an easy day because you’re going to get screwed."

You are the best by a country mile, I respect your knowledge, your impartiality and professional opinion. I have learnt so much by listening to you, I thought Francis had won on the night and was robbed but having listened to your analysis and watching the fight back I have completely changed my view. I really respect Atlas analysis, but he waffles so much around his answers. I agree with him on his two key points. Firstly, Ngannou had the biggest moments but he really didn't win enough rounds. Secondly, people's opinions are way too influenced by the context of the fight. If Francis was an established number one contender and that was a 50/50 'boxer vs puncher' fight with the bookies going into it, more people would be saying Francis didn't do enough. They may not respect fury's winning tactics (the same way they often don't respect Floyd's) but that's just the sport 🤷 if you're slick you win the rounds, if you go for the knock out you have to get it, and Francis didnt

I prefer Tim Bradley's reasons as to why he felt ngannou won the fight. He gave 5 rounds to each fighter and the 10-8 in round 3 gives ngannou the victory.. he's debating with Chris algieri and pauli maginali. He explains to them he took the same course the judges had to take and he understands how from different angles you see different things but according to the boxing criteria he gives. He says you're supposed to score the rounds based off effective punches.. so if 1 fighter throws 20 jabs and the other fighter throws 1 uppercut and that uppercut backs up the other fighter that was jabbing. Then the guy who landed the uppercut wins the round off of an effective punch. He says if you can't decide then, then you should decide by who was the most aggressive fighter, who is moving forward and pushing the action. Teddy basically gives all those swing rounds to Fury by default and gives poor explanations and reasons.

There’s more than one criteria to score a boxing match. If there was only one, you could have one judge as it’d be entirely subjective. That’s why there’s 3 judges, to give an overview. One judge did score Ngannou as the winner, two didn’t. They decide, not random tv viewers or pundits.

@@goncaloamaral7846 the word criteria is typically plural. But I suppose you mean the criteria includes several factors. It's also well known judges get it wrong more than often. There's even away to appeal decisions which I imagine would be difficult to win. The fact that the majority of fans and boxers believe ngannou won. Though I think one thing most people will agree it was a close decision and fury did get beat up. Let's not forget the WBO did a rescore with 5 random judges.. these were the results: Judge 1: 114-113 | Pacquiao Judge 2: 114-114 | Draw Judge 3: 113-115 | Horn Judge 4: 113-114 | Horn Judge 5: 113-114 | Horn Another close fight but the majority of these judges believe horn won. Also in today's case.. Tim Bradley's opinion is an extremely popular opinion.. so most he's most likely right.. it's no one's fault other than boxing. The criteria is a little too subjective and should be updated to reflect who is actually winning the fight and score the fight based off that and not on winning the boxing match off of racking up points. I mean it is a fight that's being judged. I don't agree with it being judged as an art as it it were women's gymnastics. In other words I think if this was a street fight over some girl then most of us would be in ngannous shoes than Tyson Fury.

Respect to Teddy's scoring and with his long history in the boxing world. This just shows the fundamental difference in how boxing and MMA fights are scored. He favors the fighter that appear busier, so punches/jabs with less power can add up with points that trump heavier punches that do more damage. Another very obvious difference is, in boxing, the fighter can get knocked down and given a 10 count plus a few more seconds (elapsed time as the referee assesses if the fighter can continue) and gets to continue as well as get some precious recovery time. However, in MMA, when the fighter gets knocked down, the opposing fighter gets to reign in a barrage of ground and pound strikes. In Francis' case, if this were an MMA fight, Tyson would have been finished with no doubt based on Francis' ability. Since this was a boxing match, Fury got to fight another round and recover and the rest was history.

I think it was a combination of things on why Fury struggled in the fight. I think one was that he drank his own cool-aide a bit too much and he didn’t really prepare. Two, fury didn’t expect the power to be that devastating. But I think the main reason was that he couldn’t bully Ngannou. And use his usual tactics. Ngannou didn’t allow Fury to clinch, smother him and take him to the rope where he can lean on him and tire him out like he is accustomed to do in all his fights. I think that really threw him off his game. And lastly, I love the podcast. But I will say this, Teddy at times fanboys for certain fighters contrary to what he says. And Ken changes his opinion of fighters and fights a lot of the time based on what Teddy says.

To me the clinche & leaning is the main thing that helped fury beat wilder the 3rd fight vs 2nd fight he just won clearly but the 3rd fight the way wilder was using his jab it was making it harder for fury to get any real punches in at first & after wilder dropped him the 1st time the 3rd fight fury started clinching leaning that weight on wilder & wilder allowed him to do it instead of maneuvering away & it wore wilder down plus it a bigger weight difference with wilder & fury vs ngannou & fury & I'm pretty sure ngannou is way stronger than wilder & fury which was another reason fury clinching couldn't wear ngannou down I bet if it was rematch fury would be alot more serious ngannou may not be experienced in boxing but he definitely a fighter regardless....

This may very well be true, but this isn't the core problem. Boxing, as technical as it can be, is still a sport of spectacle and drama. People were dismissing this fight merely as an easy cash grab by Fury and Ngannou but the latter proved them wrong. Heck, he even won his detractors. There's really no win-win situation when Fury took that fight. People were expecting him to dominate Ngannou like Floyd toyed with Mcgregor. That did not happen and instead, it feels like Fury was the one who was humbled, as shown by his post fight interviews and refusal to do a post fight conference. Fury and Usyk should have really fought earlier. Now, the mystique about the fight is gone. Usyk, although dominant over his win against Dubois, was also trending with controversy about the Low Blow in their match. Fury has it worse still because people are doubting his win far more. Interest between a Fury and Usyk match has weakened. But hey, Francis at least made this fight far more interesting than it had any right to be.

FN won 3 & 8 clearly and those were the most dominant (and dramatic) rounds. 4 & 7 were swing rounds. FN lost the decision by being too inactive in the slow rounds, and because Fury has the experience to know how much he has to do to stay ahead enough to take a round.

While tyson is a puncher, he doesn't hit as hard as wilder, he doesn't have that tnt, he's just so big, punching power is inevitable. Just because he knocked down someone with more power in wilder doesn't mean he has wilder power, just because he took wilder s big shots and got up doesn't mean he's more powerful than wilder it just means he can take a shot. Just because wilder can dish out huge shots, doesn't mean he can take them, you don't take the power or attributes of the people you beat.

Judging criteria is based upon effective aggression, ring generalship, hard and clean punches, and defense at the end. Francis did more of this. Bringing up the stats later on to justify Fury winning doesn't matter when Fury reacted to everything Francis did, so Francis should have stolen those rounds as well in real time since the judges can't grasp the technical aspects of boxing in real, fast time.

The underlying issue is that the functional scoring system sucks in boxing and mma. The 10 point must system never uses 1-7 scores. Why not just have a 2 point system, its strange not to use more of the scale to more clearly differentiate who wins rounds. Have there ever even been a 10-5 or a 10-2 round?

  • @0090andrew
    @0090andrew6 ай бұрын

I agree with the scoring. Ngannou had an advantage: he was unknown quantity. Now he has lost that advantage. Future fighters will know how to prepare for him, they have a video to plan from. And he showed his limitations which can be taken advantage of. He waits for opportunities instead of moving his hands. Throw a jab to keep him off and to prevent opportunities and if you can avoid a KO loss you will win 75% of rounds against Ngannou.

Yes Francis showed better than many thought he might and landed the best shot of the fight. But one good shot does not win 10 rounds. I thought Fury looked a bit flat only occasionally displaying the movement he is capable of. That Said Francis looked awkward in comparison. Fury 6-4.

No one has quite said it this way, but Ngannou has a special body type - he's like a larger version of Mike Tyson. Thick neck and thighs, heavily muscled, sturdy frame. Like The Thing in _Fantastic Four_ Very sturdy. Able to absorb Fury's punches. Fury was surprised by that, and by his strength. Ngannou was probably the first guy Fury had ever faught who could throw him around. Fury tried, but he couldn't use his size and weight the way he did with Wilder and others. Ngannou was way too strong and balanced, and experienced with grappling. He had Fury totally beat in that department. That said, Fury still outscored him. If they fight again, and Fury is in top form - which he definitely was not in for their first fight - Fury will probably outbox and outscore him decisively.

I love Francis. He was surprisingly competitive over performing expectations by a large margin. But you've gotta beat the man to be the man.He did not do that. The excitement of overperforming, the astonishing performance itself, do not make for a victory. The most surprising thing was that one judge had him winning. He was competitive with the Heavyweight champion of the world in his first ever professional boxong match. SHOCKING! But that any clear eyed, unbiased knowledgeable person would see Francis as having won is absurd.

I’ve been scratching my head on this all week…I wanted Ngannou to win as much as everybody….and I believe he should’ve won….but I just kept looking at the jabs from Fury during the fight and saying Ngannou still has to do something about those jabs as much as me saying that Fury’s jabbing has to have an impact at some point during the fight with him being the more experienced boxer, he is expected to put the finishing touch from his experience, but slacked off…..so I believe Ngannou won due to a level of experience…but I feel like boxers all over know that Ngannou won but see why Fury won because the Jabs weren’t slowing down….I also felt like 3rd round was way earlier in this fight, remember this world responds according to recency and has a recency bias…despite Ngannou going for the Superman punch….Fury was using a lot of jabs up until that point, with some elbow dipping sauce 😂….so numbers won and we can’t disagree with numbers….we are all believing in the moments as the winner…and that’s what we miss….thats what I’m so happy to see shining in this world again….the world comes together for moments once again….that’s what Boxing the BUSINESS has taken away from us…it’s no longer Boxing the FIGHT and the STORY…that’s why I believe moments should win fights like they used to…but we show numbers at the end of the fights now so…..yeah Ngannou won…but we can see why Fury won too.

Teddy is not and has never been a boxing judge and so his opinion is the opinion of a highly knowledgeable pundit, but ultimately it's just his opinion. Most pundits in Boxing believe Ngannou won and so did one of the three judges. This is the court of public opinion and we are all judges, so if we believe Ngannou won the fight then it means two judges got it wrong and it wouldn't be the first time.
