Well a couple points: - if we are being factual wasn't he absent from Tyson's side once Cus died (19)? - then you have to believe that people don't change from when they were 19 That train of logic seems weak to me. Now for the idea that Tyson is 0-5 because they were the fights that Mike was tested. That seems odd because yes Tyson flattened every other person but that discounts those boxers. If the comeback is the only thing that matters

Almost destroyed his marriage but was able to ACCEPT it and mourn and continue his life and marriage! My best wouldnt get in a fight unless he wa 50pounds heavier than the guy hahaha i boxed for a 15 years and my best mte would junp in ring with me to have alugh and i would bang him with body shot and my mate would roll around on the canvas and then say "thats it ive had enough" hahaha He is not a fight er my mate its not in him when he is hurt and loss and realises he cant win ! Tyson was strong when he was sure he was the superior fighter that say ! When he questioned this he lost it all ! Teddy is !00% on the ball

I lost my daughter a few years ago, and it was the hardest thing I ever went through. A day doesn't go by that I don't morn her death. Mike Tyson also lost a daughter, and he has carried himself with strength and dignity. The man can't even talk about his little girl without weeping. This is one of the many reasons that I will continue to watch JRE! Not only is Joe, a well educated man, among many different aspects, but he also shows why he got into this in the first place, with interviews like this! His capability to just sit back and listen and learn, is truly admiring!! I know more than a handful of people that would have interrupted on many occasions while Teddy was talking, Joe has the upmost respect to soak it in like a sponge! Bravo, Joe!

Hiding behind walls when he was a kid made him want to strive to reverse that. Holyfield and those other guys made him hide behind those same walls in his mind. His character was already set in stone.

Teddy's assessment is thoughtful and straight forward...but an old Indian saying comes to mind, "Never judge a man unless you've walked a mile in his moccasins".

Mike was 5 foot 10 inches tall and he destroyed guys that towered him. To say he didn’t overcome anything is absurd

In the end Tyson became the true warriors he always preached about. The man struggles with addiction, his past and trying to find himself. I think he is fighting daily and winning and on the days he doesn’t, he gets up and keeps fighting.

Especially in Tucker and Tillis though, there was no real adversity for him to overcome, these were no wars. Frazier/Ali 3, Duran/Barkley, Gatti/Ward, Leonard/Hearn1, etc. etc. etc. These were fights where in each case the victor was in very deep waters and found a way out.

I always come back and listen to this clip and have two observations: 1). Teddy is speaking absolute truth here and gives a million dollars worth of insight on life. 2). Rogan is a master. Doesn’t cut Teddy off and let’s him go. There’s not another interviewer on the planet who would have been able to let someone talk without interjecting or sidetrack the conversation. BTW, I was not a fan of Tyson much until he changed course a few years ago. I’m his biggest supporter now and admire his turnaround.

What Teddy is saying could hold true for the last part of Mike's career when he was only boxing for money and didn't have that hunger anymore. But life dealt him a bad hand man. From a boy who grew up on the streets and never knew any love from his parents to achieving something great in his career and being a good dad now. Mike Tyson has come a long way and he deserves all the credit for that.

Yeah but then life handed him a good hand. He was adopted by a man who had already trained 2 World Champion fighters and shared with Mike the structure and discipline principles that make a successful person. He became successful and turned on 2 out of the 3 people most responsible for HELPING him. Lets not pretend that Tyson did this on his own. 100% of the reason Tyson was who he was - His new environment. Without that help, the man is never heard of. People act like he made himself successful WITHOUT ANYONE ELSE, facing all sorts of adversity like eminem.

Mike achieved greatness, but he has a troubled soul , throughout his entire life he has been fighting his demons...the Cus Catskill environment helped him, but it never cured him of his inner problems.(he was fighting in school and touching girls even then,)..he recently beat up a guy on a plane for verbally pushing him to far....Mike is a good guy and we wish him the best.

The idea of judging athletes on how they perform when it really counts isn’t wrong. But to boil mike’s career down and say he has 0 wins and that essentially he lost every fight that really mattered is completely ignorant. There’s no accurate way to look at any of tyson’s wins and say definitively that he had to dig deep or not. It’s completely subjective and in no way measurable. You don’t always know what’s going on in these fighter’s lives at the time they’re in the ring. I guarantee you there were wins in tyson’s career where he had to dig deep. And i also guarantee you some of those wins he made look incredibly easy.

This man has the absolute most passion for his profession he has a ability to speak in a way that inspires you that's probably what made him a great trainer and coach

He's talking about overcoming ring adversity in the moment, in the ring. He was right. Mike couldn't fight back once he got hurt. Look Ali, Frazier, Foreman against Lyle- , against Jimmy Young, Foreman got off the canvas against Lyle. These guys kept fighting in the ring. Mike no. Mike didn't comeback after getting punched.

I actually think Teddy is spot on here, as Mikes big turn around as a human being came after his fighting career. Go and analyze Mikes losses, he just got frustrated and outworked in his losses when his ways didn't work. Of course he wasn't training and studying like he used to, but deep down I think he got scared and underperformed when the going got tough. He overcame that only after his active boxing career was over.

flyinglizards80 I’m sitting on a park bench, in Copley Sq in Boston one day, on my lunch break. I got my headphones on and AC/DC in my ears. I got a Boston Herald that I got at the CVS across the street and some Burger King. I’m just minding my own business. There’s a group of guys (4 or 5) from The Nation of Islam literally right behind me. So I turn down the music because I’m wondering what the hell they could be talking about. The conversation was about pigeons. I spun head around and there’s Mike Tyson telling these guys everything there is to know about pigeons. I remembered someone once showing him how he used to raise pigeons. This went on for minutes. The whole group of them starts to walk away. For some stupid reason, I don’t know why I say “Hey Mike thanks for the education, I come here every day on my lunch break and I’ve always wondered about the pigeons” (which was true there were thousands of them there) He turns and looks at me and I’m looking right into those eyes. My heart stopped, I’m thinking run, before I know it he’s rounded the park bench and was right in front of me and I got no place to go. He’s says calmly and politely says What’s your name”, so I answered (not in my best voice either). He says “You’re very lucky to have a place like this, it’s amazing”. Then stuck out his hand to shake mine. It was like shaking hands with someone that was wearing a catchers mitt. I said something like it was great to meet him. He walked away. I found out later he was in Boston for a mandatory psych evaluation after he bit Holyfield. Sorry for being long however there are 2 types of people in this world. Those that can teach and those that can’t. We can say a lot about Mike Tyson, I can safely say he can put on a clinic about everything you wanted to know about pigeons and do it well. I used to laugh when I heard him talk, since then I now just listen. Most of the time he’s actually saying some real good truths.

Except its 100% bullshit, the part about Mike failing 5 times and winning 0. Because had he not lost at all he would have to say Mike was 0-0 and never been in a fight. And he has to apply that to literally every other boxer ever. If they never lost that means they failed when they were actually tested?? And if they never lost then they were never tested?? His logic makes no sense and contradicts itself so badly.

Teddy is dead right though. I had a little league coach that told me the same thing. We won like 12 games, or whatever it was back then, with no losses one year. My coach told us, "we looked good but we didn't learn a damn thing about who we are!" As little kids, we had no idea at the time what he was talking about. Once I was in college and playing ball, it hit me like a ton of bricks, though. You learn nothing until you have to suffer, until you take a loss, get knocked down and have to get back up. That's when you learn what you're made of and who you really are, not from being victorious!

I also understand teddy's logic it's super deep but overall mike tyson has proved himself to the sport of boxing that no matter how much truma and adversity he went through in his childhood he can overcome it and become the heavyweight champion of the world 🌎..and yes some of us have been through some kind of trauma in our childhoods or even as a grown but u have to be strong and keep going in order to be successful ..and that's what mike tyson did.

Agree with him or not. This man deserves respect. You can hear his sincerity and reverence for the sport of boxing.

Teddy Atlas is in error, Mike Tyson is 1-5. Teddy pulled in Mike's early life and implied it was a source of Mikes failures. But Teddy fails to chalk-up Mike's current history - Mike is a winner as he goes through life today, he handles himself well and reflects humbly on his past - Mike is winning the most important part of his life, that which he is living today. He never said he didn't...he merely pointed out the fact that the best win on Tyson's record is probably his win over a 38 year old Larry Holmes who had been retired for 2 years after 2 consecutive losses to a light heavyweight, and was all but paid to take a dive.

Didn't even have to mention Larry! All fully grown men. All considered exceptional boxers. All thought they could beat this 20 year old kid. I guess he played his part in making them "unforgettable" lol

Teddy is spot on here. Tyson admitted this himself, not directly tho. There’s a podcast where mike tyson speaks of muhammad ali and gets emotional. Ali is the prime example of a fighter overcoming adversity; the george foreman fight. In the podcast Tyson says: “that’s the part where he overshines me” with that referring to the fighter’s mentality he then continued saying “he’s willing to die in there, I’m not willing to die in there”. It’s a really touching moment, highly recommend to watch that podcast.

Mentally weak ? He was emotionally unstable because he never had a father, his friends were dying weekly .. jail .. abuse from his mom and friends etc he was a very smart bright kid.. as a matter of fact he was very clever mentally to choose the right path, and stick to the right people once he had a chance but he always went out and looked for a chance. He had an instinct to be in the right place at the right time .. I dong believe anybody who was dating naomi Campbell was mentally weak.. as a matter of fact I'f u Google attitudes of mentally strong people he had them all - works hard. Refuses to be a people pleaser. Know where their values come from. Self reflective. Willing to wait for results. Keep going when you fail, live in the present, feel happy for others, embrace a lone time, feel open to risks and opportunities.one thing he wants strong at is being the master of his emotions. But dude who is at the age of 20? I know I am 29 and I act like a monkey when something doesnt go my way. And only now started to learn how to controll my emotions. So I would say if those things are true, and these are the attributes of a strong person mentally Tyson is one of the best there ever were, along with Napoleon, stalin, Mandela etc. He really is from their clothes

Hold on...tyson grew up in the streets constantly bullied broke no parents or friends was arrested like 20 times and pretty much left for dead and within 7 years after meeting cus he was the undisputed unified heavy weight boxing champion of the world in the convos with the greats and the highest paid athlete in the world...if thats not over coming adversity then i dont know what is

The MAN Mike is TODAY, in my mind he did overcome everything!!! And THAT was the BIGGEST fight which he's still fighting today. He's still a will always be the undisputed heavyweight champ we knew!!!

Teddy is wrong. Mike didn’t bite Evander to get out of the fight. He bit him because of the head butts and the repetitive low blows, and the referee doing absolutely nothing about it. It was frustration, not cowardice.

By your logic razor ruddock would have been justified in biting mikes ear after the 50 low blows that mike hit him with in both fights ! So you’re wrong, Mike bit the ear cuz he was mentally weak and couldn’t find a way to win so he got a stoppage on antics, Norton broke Ali’s jaw but Ali found a way. Hopkins was 42 fighting guys half his age but he found a way. Marciano had 1 eye shut , behind in points in the 2nd to last round BUT he found a way to defeat Walcott. Tyson never had that kind of character and didn’t feel compelled to develop it cuz he had sycophant yes-men and casual boxing fans like you in his corner telling him he was invincible.... while he was getting k.o’d 😂

By Teddy’s own logical he proved himself wrong...Mike wasn’t trying to overcome people that was easy. He was trying to overcome being that kid who hid in walls. And by that token Mike is Champ.

Maybe physically. But you don't know what goes on in his head. If you watch tysons podcast. Tyson always puts himself down and is ashamed of who he is and what hes done. It's funny everyone thinks highly of him but himself. He knows the things he's done that no one knows about. And he hates living with himself knowing who he truly is.

My father was a writer for many years with Sports Illustrated. He first met Cus in the 1950’s and became very good friends with him. They talked all the time. Shortly after Cus first got Mike into the ring , Cus called my dad and said that he has a 13 year old kid who will end up being the youngest heavyweight of all time. Cus was 100 percent convinced. Cus also thought that Mike could end up being the greatest of all time but he said that there were too many variables to make that claim. Here is my view on what happened with Mike. He loved and worshipped Cus. And Mike also liked and respected greatly his manager, Jimmy Jacobs. Mike ended up losing Cus and Jimmy at a young age (21). Jimmy and Cus (especially Cus) could tell Mike what to do and he would do it. Without either one of them around, the limit to which Mike would listen to his trainers diminished over time. To a degree he became uncontrollable and unteachable and that became his downfall. That does not mean I don’t respect what Mike achieved. But I do think that if Cus had lived a longer life Mike would have achieved even more.

I agree. The deaths of Cus and then Jimmy Jacobs in '88 were turning points. Both men and especially Cus were the only father figures in Mike's life. It was like he lost a father twice. At any age that's rough but especially if you're in your early 20s. People that disagree have probably never experienced that. Once he left Kevin Rooney it was pretty much all downhill from there sadly. Tyson will always be my favorite boxer of all time.

He's in no position to disagree, so he shuts up. It's a skill we should all learn but it's hard. Joe Rogan is a fan, Teddy Atlas was his trainer. Tyson was never a warrior. Teddy knows warriors and he'd say if the guy was ready to go to war. He was never in one, because he disengaged every time he had the chance. If the other guy didn't go down quickly, he went down.

A rare and essential skill for a good interviewer. Make it about the guest, not yourself. Let them shine, or let them hang themselves. The instinct to shut up and let them talk is something that someone like Fallon is completely devoid of. Interesting perspective though.

This guy helped Mike more than anyone will ever know. As a fighter! He made Tyson feel intelligent. And that carried him into the person he his today.

I love Mike Tyson but I also have to agree with my man Teddy Atlas. He has the balls to say it. My father told me a very similar thing 25 years ago about Tyson and we all love Tyson regardless.

I get what Teddy is saying; but I dont think its totally fair.. Yes Tyson lost some key fights to Lewis, Holyfield.. But he was in quite a few competitive fights; where he had to dig a bit deeper to win.. His wins over Razor Ruddock, Tony Tucker and Francois Botha come to mind.

Naw, I think you missed his point. Teddy is saying that the Mike Tyson that grew up hiding in the streets never stopped hiding. Mike never learned how to overcome his character flaw. Mike never beat himself when he had a chance to grow past whatever was holding him back from becoming a better version of himself.

Yes Tyson did not handle the upper echelon of champions, ie Lewis, Holyfield. Yes Tyson destroyed 35 or 40 guys who were shaking in their boots.. But there was another smaller group maybe 5 or 6 guys who gave Tyson a competitive fight. And Tyson did not get frustrated, did not foul out of the fight, he went on to win those fights where the guy was putting up a bit of a challenge. Some of his decent wins against decent fighters are not given enough credit IMO. Thats basically what I am saying.

Much respect for Joe for letting Teddy say his piece. Most interviews are packed with interruptions.

Just because Mike made most fights appear easy, doesn't mean he never overcame adversity. We don't know how many injuries he fought threw, we can't feel the shots. Only Mike knows when he overcame adversity

Ironically, Teddy doesn't realise that he was being tested as a man,with Mike the child and he failed. Mike needed Teddy greatly at that point of conflict between them, for guidance, stability and to be shown the right way to become, not just a great fighter, but a great man. I don't agree with what Mike did, but he was a child with emotional & behavioural issues.....that needed help......that help should of come from Teddy more than anyone else, because of how close Teddy was to Mike and seeing first hand the issues Mike needed mentoring through. What other reason would Cus have for getting rid of Teddy? Cus knew Mike needed help, not more conflict.

Great interview! This is why Joe Rogan is the most popular podcaster/interviewer in the world. Notice how the master Joe comes to the table with zero agenda and let's this guy speak his experiences with no interruptions. I just learned more about Mike Tyson in this short clip. than everything I've seen on him over the years. Joe, keep blowing away the competition.

What Teddy is saying here is pure Gems. Lets all of us who are tyson fans put emotion aside. I love tyson but Teddy speaks the truth and it has helped me as a person.

Atlas has a point, but Mike's real fights are with his demons outside the squared ring. And it's very inspiring to see how he transformed to the person he is today

OK, Teddy duly noted and understood. It’s a well stated explanation from someone with experience. Another additional point is that all the other champions at the time were able to watch Mike ascend to a heavyweight title. They could assimilate his style over the years and prepare to fight Mike by dissecting his style of success. Lennox Lewis was just waiting to dissect and utilize the strategy advantage that he clearly had with his size and skill. It’s possible no fighter was better prepared than Buster Douglas, physically and mentally, in his match against Mike in Japan. Lennox displayed a very similar strategy and skill later on. At 19 and 20 years old, Mike would have likely beat both of them. Mike showed flashes of previous greatness after jail. What could’ve been? Mike entrapped himself unfortunately. Mike missed out on 3 years of fighting and training at his best. Oh well, stuff happens. Mike has more than bounced back in life, “The Biggest Fight”. Those lost years were at the prime physical age of 25 to 28 years old, all that time lost out of the fight game. Problems, Court and stress , Mike lost more than 3 prime years. This IMO.

I agree. The original Tyson was invincible. So invincible, he took Douglas for granted. After leaving Kevin Rooney and teaming up with Don King and trainer Aaron Snow he took a downshift in his ability. Tyson no longer moved quite the same. After his prison sentence, Tyson, although a threat, was no longer the highly skilled somewhat smaller fighter he was in his prior reign. Tyson was still (somewhat) good in his muscle memory after prison, but he was not as great a fighter as he was in his initial appearance on the stage. Even though I have great respect for Hollyfield and Lennox Lewis, IMHO, the original Tyson would have defeated both of these fighters with KOs.

Youre missing the point, any time he had to fight IN THE RING and adversity reared its head, he couldnt do it, he overcame a lot, just not opponents who matched his skill and talent, because he was so used to running people over and his ego became comfortable in that, Atlas acknowledged him and then went to state his point

What an amazing inspirational talk to do the right things in life. Look at yourself can you apply what he says to yourself and your life? Most people choose weakness.

In therms of record, he is 100% right. He is profoundly right. Tyson never defeated one of the true warriors of his time. He lost to lennox and evander and thats very telling. Those are the dudes in his resume that were elite fighters. Who are the biggest names he defeated? Washed up larry holmes, michael (mismatch) spinks? Razor rudock? He never won against a historically brilliant and dificult athlete. He was bigger than lige because there was never someone as danger as he was.

People forget Mike Tyson was always the smaller guy

As much Tyson fans are criticized for having excuses for his losses. It seems Tysons haters have more excuses for his wins.. If Larry Holmes had nothing left in the tank why did he beat Ray Mercer and take a prime Holyfield the distance 5 years after Tyson almost killed him? If Spinks was too small for heavyweights why did he KO Cooney and decision Holmes who both outweighed Mike? If Tyson always folded against adversity why did he beat Ruddock after Ruddock hit him with everything but the kitchen sink?

Tyson isn't just a champion of Heavyweightboxing. He is a champion of the people. Ali was the same. That is true greatness.

Tyson was the only person that could beat Tyson. He was unbeatable in the late 80s.

Dennis Moore Tyson fought a bunch of below average fighters in the 80s. When it comes to the best fighters of his generation like Holyfield and Lewis he lost. Once he knew he couldn’t knock em out he folded, like a bully getting punched back.

@@seandoughty767 exactly, Tyson beat journeymen on the way to the top. Most of those guys were beat before the first bell. Lewis and Holyfield were not intimidated by Tyson at all. Granted Tyson wasn't at his best when he fought the but I believe they both could've beat him in his prime. He certainly wasn't unbeatable.

I always thought it was his vulnerability and fear that made Tyson terrifying. Kudos to Rogan for not interrupting.

In my opinion, Mike did fight his hardest when it mattered, in life! He overcame the obstacles of life that was put in front of him and came out a better man and broke out of that wall he was hiding in.

I dont think he's Top 5. Maybe as far as impact at a time when the heavyweight divison was terrible. But he was a force and a beast, But Im not sure what happened with his niece. But still too say he wasnt a great fighter is blasphemy. Dude has been overcoming obstacles his whole life. By the worlds standards he's a fighter. He gets knocked down and everytime he got back up and fought back. Refused to give up. For that alone hes a beast in my book but just not top 5 in the ring

Forget where Mike came from... Think about this: Mike says that he was scared to death before EVERY SINGLE fight. For him to do what he did despite being scared is absolutely the mark of a Champion. There’s nothing Teddy’s ever done in his life to the level that Mike did. You said it yourself; life is like a fight and is about the obstacles one has overcome. What have YOU overcome, Teddy? Thought so. If you switched roles and had to go through what he went through, would we have ever heard of you? Would you have even survived???
