    I think were going to see that the 2.7L Ecoboost is the performance leader in the mid-size class. I test drove a Colorado ZR2 with the 2.7L Turbomax and it was kind of a dud IMHO. It did NOT feel like it was making anywhere near 430 ft-lbs of torque. This was coming from driving a 6400 lb 2014 F150 Ecoboost on 35's that "only" makes 420 ft-lbs. The ZR2 should have made my F150 feel like a slouch and it was the total opposite. My F150 felt stronger.

    Nice Truck, the biggest issue is discounts. These quarter tons never receive the incentives the half-tons do, and typically you can get a F-150 in the same Trim for cheaper. Even now in this crazy car market, you can get a F-150 $8-10k off MSRP without even trying. Factor in a very minimal MPG gain, and getting an Aluminum Body with the F-150, vs Steel with the Ranger. Going F-150 is a No Brainer.

  • @KNRS927

    @KNRS927

    2 ай бұрын

    That's my take on this too, especially with these quarter ton trucks getting so expensive. You could pick these up, nearly fully maxed out, in the low to mid 40s pre-pandemic and that'd be the ideal price for this today so there's actually a decent price gap. If you're speccing a Ranger out close to 50k, you might as well get an F-150 at that point.

  • @tedunguent156

    @tedunguent156

    I always laugh when people buy an F-150 and get home to find out it DOESN'T fit in their garage. Oops. Should have measured it first. You're right about the economics but people buy compact trucks for a lot of OTHER reasons. Being shorter and narrower with better approach, departure and break over angles is a plus, too.

He's buying a Catalina 25 sailboat this weekend and having that 7500 lbs of towing and 1500 lbs of cargo carrying (tongue weight in his case) is a huge plus. The boat weighs about 3500 lbs dry, so when he gets it all loaded up for a trip he'll still be way under the weights = nice truck for something like this.

    My previous truck was a 2002 Sonoma was an extended cab with a rear door on the driver's side. My new truck, a 2016 Canyon, is also an extended cab. Last year, I bought a 2016 Canyon because I didn't want the cylinder deactivation that was added in 2017, and it has rear suicide doors on both the driver and passenger side. The problem with the new extended cab Tacoma (fake prerunner) is that it doesn't have rear doors. I was able to find a Canyon with low mileage because the previous owner was a retired guy, so he didn't drive it a lot. I got it for a decent price because it had all the features that most people don't want, like 2WD and a manual transmission.

    It's a good looking truck. Issue to me is the price. These midsize trucks are getting more expensive while full-size trucks offer thousands in incentives and that eats into the price. You could probably find an F150 Lariat for almost the same price of a top-trim 50-53k Ranger. Also, these mid-size trucks aren't really that much smaller or small in exterior dimensions to justify choosing them for the size. You're still driving a Tahoe/Expedition sized car and that is considered a big car that's hard to park. You ideally shouldn't be looking at a truck if size is a concern all while you don't have a use for a truck. If you have a use/desire, then go full-size all the way and get more for your money.

    Original Ford Ranger base price in 2010 was $20,280 at the end of its sales life. Thanks to inflation, its now equivalent to $28,861.45. Ford is stating the new base model base price will 'start at $30k', so its pretty comparable. Blame dealers, states/fed taxes, and CAFE standard, and feature creep for price inflation above that.

I bet if 10ft beds were available in the states, everyone would get one. thinking thats the best thing since sliced bread. 🤷🏾‍♂️ Ill admit I'm not truck dude i drive a Santa cruz 4ft box, however I haul and use my micro unibody like i would any other truck (hauling Rocks,lumber, landscaping stuff, heaps of construction debris, flooring etc, I don't pull trailer's etc if i did then it would make sense to have a bigger truck. But the Santa cruz pulls 5000lbs which is still pretty good considering its size. It's a 4ft bed but its very practical. Sometimes we just gotta get creative with what we have vs just automatically wanting larger and longer the classic American mentality.

    There is a lot to like. Really, Ford has made a good effort to be competitive in this mid size market. I really appreciate the 10-speed transmission and some of the bed conveniences. I’m not a huge fan of vertical set LCD’s, prefer GM’s horizontal layout. But most of my dislikes are subjective. All the kudos aside, there are some really aggravating design and “selections” issues that Ford knows people don’t like universally and yet they continue to charge $$$ selling the vehicle with design elements people nearly universally dislike. When Ford (or any manufacturer) is aware of the things we all dislike, continues to ignore the complaints is either incompetence, arrogance, indifference, greed or all the above! I think it’s mostly greed. In 1980, the President of Ford made $400,000 dollars a year total compensation! That was 10x the income of his average employee. Today the President of Ford (and all big WOKE corporations) is 1000x the average employee, with Fords Harvard educated President at $25,000,000 total Compensation plus some nice perks like corporate Jets for family vacation and chauffeurs so he doesn’t have to drive the vehicles he makes. If Ford took care of the customers like it pays the leadership and its employees, it would be an amazing products even for those like me who cannot afford a $1500 dollar month car payment. The entire process of over paying and poor reliability makes me believe “all the above, drives the outcomes”.. Ford (to be fair GM, Toyota and others do the same thing) isn’t listening and won’t until we stop buying their vehicles. So I’ll complain…. That’s about all I can do. Here are things that make me angry! Seriously FORD! The grey headliners and plastic “A” pillars look cheap and worse Ford knows people hate them. Just put the black or tan matching headliner in the truck. It’s not enough more expensive to matter! For example, the Lariat in this video has black and tan doors, then they stick non matching/ contrasting light grey plastic pillars and headliner materials where it is most visible!!! Well. If we’ll all just buy a Raptor the we too can have color coordinated headliners and visors! This literally sucks Ford! Next, I really really hate the spaghetti bowl chaos under the hood. This does. Ot have to be this way but it’s a clear signal to buyers of the lack of empathy or care to the customer and mechanics that try to maintain and or repair these engines. It makes it a nightmare to work on and increases the cost for repairs. When a mechanic has to spend 3 hours unhooking and rehooking all the mess when making repairs.. that’s $400 before the actual engine repair begins. Clean up the freaking mess. Don’t just cover it up with a piece of plastic! Finally these trucks look unbalanced. The rear wheel well is literally touching the cab and the cab is longer than the bed! Add a foot or at least 6” between the cab and wheel well. A 5.5 bed would look better and be more convenient and THE SMALLEST GARAGES in the US are 11x18. But the average size across all states is 20x23. I get my full size F-150 in my 2 car garage that is 22’w X 19’ deep! Make it an option to get a 1’ longer bed! Next, stop all the monthly access fees! You’re turning ownership into a never ending rental. You buy… make massive payments and the. Get hit with monthly fees to access all the available capabilities of the vehicle. Ford… treat your customers as well as you treat you management teams. No I’m not saying give everyone $25,000,000 a year. All I ask is that you address the issues people don’t like nearly universally, that you make reliable vehicles that need nothing but service for 250,000 miles and that you do so at a price middle class Americans can afford. I’m 57. I’ve owned fords since 1982. I’m firmly middle class. I’ve always purchased the highest trim level pickups and I’ve always been able to afford them with some sacrifice and planning. My last luxury truck purchase was a 2013 F-150 Platinum with every possible option. Sticker was $52,000. I paid $43,000+\- plus $800 for a 100,000 7-year blue oval warranty. Today that truck is $83,000. Yes there are more “nice” features but then that’s what every new generation has had, improved features and increased costs INLINE WITH INFLATION. The price increases since 2017 have not been in line with inflation and have far far outpaces income increases. This is why Union Workers went on strike. The average Ford worker cannot afford the pickups they build! If my income had kept up with inflation from 1983 to today, I’d be making $420,000. I could then afford Fords trucks. But like the vast majority, I’ve watched CEO’s and Politicians become billionaires with every increasing wealth, power and loathing of the middle class. The absolute maximum cost of a loaded Ranger (not realtor) shouldn’t be more than $39,000. But we are well past this and they still are reducing options and sticking crappy headliners in everything lariat trim levels and below. They still make trucks nearly impossible to repair. Start caring about your customers not for the 3-year 36,000 mile warranty period. Care about the middle class that sacrifice vacations, eating out, housing and other necessities in order to buy something they need to last 15-20 years and when it needs a repair, we need the repair not to cause undue financial hardship. Back to where I began… there is a lot to like but equally there are the same frustrations Ford (and other manufacturers do also) simply doesn’t care enough to address.

Most of these things don't need to be standard, but for them to not even be available options is just a swing and a miss. The quicker Ford can fix those errors AND offer a PHEV option, the quicker they can dominate the mid-size truck market. We need more small diesel trucks here in the US. Everyone gets the good stuff but us!

    Why would anyone want a dirty, expensive diesel. High fuel cost, extra weight on the front axle, high maintenance cost, they all burn oil, DEF cost and all the EGR replacement costs in a few years of ownership. Not one small diesel has worked out here in America. Everyone has had or still has problems. Diesel engines are dying out all over.

    Its interesting that typically the European Ford Ranger has a 700-1000lb higher payload than the USA model. It must be a regulatory thing?
