2012 Tacoma owner here. Best Tacoma.
Bought the Colorado trail boss. $42,500 with the 360 camera, remote start, adaptive cruise, factory bed liner, blind spot monitoring, trailer brake control and 7700 tow capacity. A comparable XLT Ranger is about $4k more and I like the appearance of the trail boss with the factory lift more than the fx4 Ranger. Plus you’ve got more power and towing. Yeah it’s a ton of money for a mid size truck but beats paying the Toyota tax for a taco that was made in Mexico.

Mine's got 190K and other than it likes doing 2-4 and 3-5 shifts on a regular basis it's been flawless. Of course forums will always list the bad ones first and bad units will always be possible. The 2024 Ranger has a revised transmission and skipping gears is part of its programming but Bronco and Explorer users haven't had widespread issues with it so it looks like it's doing fine. Let's not forget GM also had issues with the 8L45 and 8L90 for a few years. Delayed shits, hesitation to downshift, rough shifting among other issues. It would be good to know if this has been fixed on the new Colorado and full size trucks.

The Tacomas have a front diff recall and a few other things but I’m sure most manufacturers will have them straightened out in the next year or two!
Nice job Emme! I would have liked to see the Nissan Frontier in this comparison...
After months of research and a few test drives, I purchased a new 2024 Colorado ZR2. It was nearly fully loaded for less than $52,000 including lane keep, adaptive cruise control, 360 camera etc. after primarily looking at the 2024 Tacomas, I was left feeling as if it was just a very mid truck. That’s the best way I can describe it. It was just meh with no personality. The mid spec trd sport/offroads at my dealer were over $53,000 with much less features than the zr2, I was not a fan of that. Can’t imagine how much the trd pro will cost when they come out, more than likely over $60k and even then the $51,000 zr2 will still compete. I test drove a manual 24 Tacoma and an automatic 24 Trd offroad, as well as a 24 Colorado z71 (hard to find zr2 in stock so I could only guess how it felt) but I am so very happy and pleased with the Colorado zr2. Tacomas power plant was very buzzy and felt very gutless. I’ve had my zr2 for almost a week and I’m passing through 500 miles and have been on it very hard the past few days. It is incredibly fun offroad and makes tons of torque, 430lbft if I recall. The 4wd launch control on it is actually quite impressive, gives a nice whiplash! I was really pleasantly surprised. I couldn’t be any happier with my choice so far!

I found mostly trade-offs between the Ranger and Colorado. Comparing the interior of the Colorado LT with the Ranger XLT, I did not like the cloth seat material in the Colorado which is rough and comes only in black, while the Ranger offers a softer tan cloth material. The Colorado also does not have front passenger seat height adjustment (manual or powered) at any trim level, while the Ranger offers both for the passenger front seat. The Ranger XLT also has a back seat fold down center arm rest standard, while the Colorado LT only offers that with the leather trim in Convenience Pkg III, which adds even more to the price. So, by going with the Ranger XLT optioned the way I want it, I am saving about $3500 than going with the Colorado. I like both trucks, but the Ranger basically won primarily due to the seats.

@harolddenton6031 last year ? I ordered one 3 weeks ago. I had a second dealer willing also, and they just had a custom order get picked up almost right away.
The motortrend review claimed that the 8 speed in the new tacoma still hunts gears just like it in the previous gen.
I am going to buy the Ford Ranger 2.7

Sure you are!!
No Ridgeline or Frontier in the comparison?
New Tacos are piling up at dealerships and are not selling. SR5s are stickered over $50K and TRD Pros at over $65K!! Common.
I cannot get over that the shifter in the Colorado seems to be on the passenger side.
Why no frontier?
in the Taco try putting your phone upside down. If you are using an Apple and its a Max series V13 and newer Apple moved the charging loop. Same issue with the Tesla Model 3 - I can only charge my iPhone 13 XS Max if I out it upside down
Talk about reliability, thats the most important thing lady.
Not buying a truck with a 4-banger. Period. Frontier is a far better option in so many respects to these three options.
Answering from Australia. Chev Colorado then Toyota. Happy with either. But still having my 1998 Hilux. Lux for the money
Sad to see the 4th gen Tacoma lose the utilitarian flat rear seat storage the 3rd gen had.
i'm 9 seconds in, and you're right. I'm just going to go out and buy a Taco!
On a midsize, never tow anymore than 5000 pounds!! I don’t think people realize how heavy 5000 pounds is. And I don’t care what the engine specs are if you try to pull 6500 to 7500 you push it on the engine and transmission and the control of the vehicle since it’s smaller….. a midsize will pull easily any bass boat or recreation boat. If you’re pulling more than 5000 pounds just go to a halfton. Just because it says it can pull 7500 doesn’t mean you should do it. I have a 91 Baja 225 23 footer that weighs almost 5000 trailer and I pull it just fine with my older Tacoma. most midsize will do the job you needed to do. You really don’t need a half ton but if it’s over 5000 I would recommend a half ton.
In Michigan, after 2-3 years, rust will be visible on the Toyota and Chevy. NOT on the Ranger.
Most important factor for me is looks. Tacoma and Colorado look mean and tough. Ranger looks curvy and non-intimidating. I bought the Colorado

looooool looks are your most important factor in a truck? Are you twelve? Doesn't matter which one you picked, it's ridiculous to judge a truck on it's looks.

I own a Tacoma but I still like the way the new ranger looks from the front.
Let's see, one will see 300,000 miles, and two of them will see the inside of the repair shop before 100,000. Take a guess on which is always the smarter buy. But then everyone seems to be made of money.
No GMC Canyon? Was it left out because its similar to the Colorado? Thanks for the video.
I was going to get one of these but I bought a Pinto instead. No computers, no power anything and much better offroad with its 1' lift and 35" mudders on it.
Maybe state the actual payload of the trim tested instead of the max payload.
First time I’ve ever w this particular car reviewer. She’s great reminds me of the great CandD writers.
4wd “lockers” activated via the touchscreen is way worse than having the headlights in the touchscreen. Also, the Chevy is the only one to have rear hvac vents - WTF Ford and Toyota? They all have 4 full size doors. The Chevy is also the only one of these 3 to have 4wd Auto mode.
