The most famous “fake Native American” was Iron Eyes Cody, the “Indian” who shed a single tear in those 1970’s anti-littering commercials. He insisted he was Native American his whole life, and was in many movies. He died at 94, and it was then revealed he was Sicilian.

Most people of Mexican descent are of indigenous heritage but deny this due to discrimination by their lighter skinned countrymen. Although Spanish is the official language of Mexico, it's not the language spoken prior to the Spanish conquest. Mexico has many indigenous languages, some of which are considered endangered, the indigenous are often bilingual and some especially the children who translate for their parents, (who are Spanish second language and have a hard time with English) can speak three languages, Indigenous, Spanish and English.

I second this. Although the Mexican government is trying to preserve the older, more traditional cultures through language programs (Nahuatl in Jalisco or the Mayan dialects in the Yucatan) and cultural spotlights, it doesn't erase the stigma of being "indio." Sadly, economic pressures seem to be erasing the more traditional way of life for those who wanted to remain closer to their roots. I find it odd that the organizations focusing on the native peoples in the United States don't seem to extend the same curtesy south of the border. Although The First Nations in Canada cover many of the larger tribes within that region, it always seemed to be regarded more positively (even though largely ignored) within the the United States.

Okay, here’s the thing (and the problem with this video). 1. Sasheen did not lie about being NA. She lied about what tribe she was from. The fact is, it’s actually extremely unlikely that she would be half Mexican, but not NA, because the vast majority of Mexicans are NA (Mexico actually has the largest NA population in the world). However, many Mexicans do not have tribal affiliation, but at NA nonetheless. The likely scenario is, she didn’t know what tribe she would have crime from and probably just picked a better known one to associate with. 2. As for the sisters, from what I remember about their statement, they said they were not NA, but instead were Mexican. What that tells me is they do not associate Mexican with NA, which unfortunately is all too common. So yes, they did claim that they are not NA, while in the same breath stating that they are in fact Mexican, which is predominantly NA. They also stated there were no links to tribal heritage. That is not the same as saying they are not NA. It just means they have no tribal heritage. Not all NA are tribal members. For example: As a person of Puerto Rican descent, I am 14% NA, but the government considers my tribe (Taino) “extinct”, therefore, I’m part NA with no “tribal heritage”.

It's disgusting. Here is a quote from Canadian Senator Paula Simons speech on Pretendians. It sounds like it was written for Buffy but it is from before the news broke. "Every time a self-deluded narcissistic pretendian wins an award, gets university tenure or is given a seat at a boardroom table, it means someone real has been pushed out or denied access. It is all too evident that many such pretendians delight in perpetuating clichés, stereotypes and tropes about Indigenous people, making it even harder for authentic contemporary voices to be heard." It's worth a watch. Very powerful speech on the subject. Buffy did nothing. She set indigenous people back by perpetuating stereotypes and making them out to be less than. Even last year on Indigenous Day she said we need to come up with something positive about native people, as she pivots to sell her childrens books!! Insinuating the world knows nothing positive about them....or do we still think they are just stuffed in museums or extinct? That one is her favourite. She says it in almost every interview. A good one to see her true character is the ASU video (9 years ago) where she rants on about Columbus and the conquistadors as good men that just had "bad management". @Mark is not even close. Our family doesn't drink. So there's no drunk tirade. My father was a child of an alcoholic. His father, George, drank, abused him, fostered homes, family to family. Lost his hearing at 9yrs old. His mother died at 22yrs. Sacheen took his life and made it her story except for being deaf. Would of helped. On Google we read about her death, that it had already been arranged, and the funeral director was instructed not to communicate with my middle sister. Legally, we are her heirs, and rightfully so. we are taking care of business. Some gal parading around as her neice accepting condolences and forged her death certificate. We're dealing with that. As sisters, we were never spoken or written about. We didn't want to play Indian. Otherwise, she was afraid of the truth. Sacheen told vicious lies and slandered her family, especially our father, for personal gain. Ruthless & narcissistic. A self identified schizoaffective bipolar and spoke of it often. Plus, in & out of psych wards, which only the family knew. Try living with a family member who's mentally ill with violent psychotic episodes. We went to the funeral since no one knew we existed. I approached the podium to address the fact that she has 2 biological sisters, and none of us have children. Talk about our grandparents, parents, and the good people they were. How we had a good life growing up and my father didn't do anything wrong. Marie Louise created Sacheen because she didn't like her Hispanic hertiage. Even on her marriage license to Rubio, she listed our father's info. Wrong. After the divorce, she never married again. BTW that name comes from Sasheen Ribbon Company. She dropped the s to c that's why no tribes could match it to their language. We used to make our own clothes and belong to 4-H, ballet lessons, Catholic schools, and county fairs just like any other family in the country. No poverty. Our parents had a successful business, our home was behind the shop and our grandparents' house 100Ft away with a stable & our horse. Marie wore a Plains buckskin dress instead of traditional Apache and hairstyle to Oscar's. Red flag. As a pathological liar, schizophrenic and the victim/Saint act she was a con. A terrible actress to us because "well, we got stuck with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. This is way b4 JK. I am Apache. I am registered as 3/4 San Carlos Apache and 1/4 White Mountain Apache for a total "4/4" enrollment as Apache in rural AZ. I can speak the Apache language. Historically, during colonization there was a lot of intermixing with European and indigenous people getting married and having children. A lot of times, the children would pass as white. Or, sometimes indigenous women were raped by Spanish men. Over centuries, a pattern arose in Colonial Spain of denying indigenous ancestry despite the genetic presence in the mixed-blooded population. That didn't always happen - many Mexicans proudly admit their indigenous heritage. But the pattern of denial has also occurred. Moreover, many Mexicans are part West African but that is completely obscured for most of the population. But the DNA evidence is there. Sacheen embraced "Apache" heritage despite having roots around Mexico City which means she would likely be part Aztec (distantly) or have ancestry to a similar, proximal tribe in that region. The White Mountain Apache Agency has no record of her father as an enrolled member. Usually, Apaches from that reservation would recognize a distant family member if roots can be traced to a particular clan or community on the reservation. But her dad had no such connections which is obviously fraudulent. So, I concur with Dr. Grande's conclusions on the matter. He is very thorough and objective. Meanwhile, John Wayne was actually very good friends with Apaches in rural AZ - the full-blooded tribal members who spoke the Apache language fluently. So, I'll bet John Wayne was angry because he knew she was not a real Apache since he had befriended actual Apaches from Whiteriver, AZ where I have family roots. Historically, Mexico had a slave trade on Apaches for hundreds of years. At times, there was a scalp bounty system in Mexico to kill off Apaches. For one of the Mexican states, a scalp of an Apache child was worth 25 pesos, a woman 50 pesos, and an adult male was set at 100 pesos. During enslavement, Apaches often escaped which led Colonial Spain to send Apache slaves to Cuba. The Apache-Mexico War lasted from the 1500s to 1900s and it was very harsh. Geronimo became a renegade when his family was killed by scalp bounty hunters. The Apache Wars in Mexico were fierce and led to harsh conflicts at Tres Castillos, Cerrita De Mata Ortiz, and the rugged terrain of the Sierra Madres. But many modern Mexicans are very progressive and embrace their indigenous heritage. Unfortunately, that wasn't always the case in history.

Another trend I'm noticing is people claiming to be autistic when it's clear they do not have autism. Like people aren't special on their own merits so they fake things to garner sympathy and praise for mundane things. "You drove the the store! you're so amazing!" gimme a break.

Dr Grande, Hispanic is a made up term by the US census and grouped people of Mexican heritage into that box and also as white because “originating from a Spanish speaking country.”Although most Mexican/American people have little to no Spanish blood. Mexican people are Native American and have always been indigenous people to North America. Colonizers tried to erase our heritage and culture and it of course has worked but a lot of us are reclaiming our roots and not checking the white box anymore. Yaqui is a Native American group here in Arizona and in Mexico. We are American born, of Mexican heritage and indigenous roots. Y’all can’t change us or tell us to fit us into your simplified box. We are a mixture of cultures and get the best of both worlds. Btw I am Yaqui and I also know Apache and others who are of Mexican or “Hispanic” descent. You should look into this topic and do a new analysis. We also identify as Chicano which is a term we made to reclaim our roots which basically means, we are Americans of Mexican heritage and indigenous roots. Mexican is not an ethnicity it’s a nationality and also most of the USA southwest was once Mexico. As for us from Arizona, we also have relatives on the Mexico side and we have a saying, ‘we didn’t cross the border, the border crossed us.” In conclusion “Hispanic” people in the USA, Mexico and central/South America are all native Americans. We’ve always been here. Indigenous. Hope that was informative and I’d love your feedback. I love your channel and hope this clarifies the complexity of people like us. Ps if Sacheen’s sisters did a DNA test Native American would surely appear because of her Mexican father. So everyone in the comments stop adding to the erasure of us native Americans by saying Mexican and Hispanic people are not. We are brown not white and we know who we are. Stop the colonizer mentality and educate yourselves on this subject. If you made it this far, thank you.🫶🏾

No he wasn’t Spanish, Spanish are white Europeans. Also, not a rant just re-educating what you’ve been taught. Most Mexicans are Native American that’s why they’re brown skin not white. Also, New Mexicans are very colonized mentality and prefer to be called Spanish because they believe being white is superior. I saw a documentary of a proud “Hispanic” Spanish family in NM they’re son did a dna test and turned out he was majority Native American and they were all beautifully brown. Even with this scientific evidence his older family members couldn’t accept it and continued saying they are European from Spain. Sad but that’s how a lot are. Then there’s us who have reclaimed our roots and are very proud of our indigenous roots! ❤️ Spanish people even call us “Indians” and say we are not Spanish nor Hispanic.

I think they did complain but few people actually bother to check and she had long since ceased to be a major public figure. It takes a receptive audience for complaining to be worthwhile. One reason why Elizabeth Warren's ancestry lie was in the news was because of the determined efforts of one man who brought the tribal lists to the attention of multiple media organizations and kept going despite clear lack of interest. In practice, Native American identity or problems don't get any attention until there is sympathy points to be made or political accusations to be hurled.
