    Thanks for the info and thoughts! I really enjoy my 3" iFlight Cinewhoop I placed one of my DJI setups inside. I have greater confidence chasing remote control planes closer thanks to the duct protection. You lose performance but it is not as bad as I had thought it would.

    The original design has to be credited to Laurent Athenol "Frame-Concept" and his BeeBumper. Iflight made one similar recently with the help of Laurent, called Bumblebee. It may not be the most agile, but it's one of the safest option to make great shot around soft flesh ^^

    i cant wait to see what you come up with. i always thought the duct shape added lift to the frame. as well as funneling air into a prop the duct edge seems to be the only surface providing lift instead of down force. i just gave away the secret to my new frame design.

It flies as close to perfect as these are going to get! Plus now its quiet enough that i can fly it in the neighborhood without feeling like an a##hole !

    I mean, my 160g dry weight 3" racers will take the same battery, and actually still feel like a racer (just one with an underslung GoPro). In my mind, the thing to wait for is the next-Gen DJI Air Unit - if it has 4096x3072 (4k class 4:3) recording capability, then right there I no longer require a Session, and can start making adjustments for AUW accordingly. Molded carbon fiber ducts and the right props, could probably achieve the same flight envelope/time on a 4S 1000mAh pack, but be working back towards real acro maneuverability.

    I ordered this quad frame a few weeks back after tossing up between the two. Though the bumblebee is lighter the front camera protection is not as good on the bumblebee which is important to me running dji gear and the iflight will be really shit to work on. Waaay too many screws to access anything with the solid plate design, especially as you almost have to remove the duct just to fit a prop on these.

    I've never been satisfied with the execution, this included, but I do think this kind of composite design is the way forward for this kind of thing. We several options for very stiff, strong, light and impact resistant foam. Foam composites are very stiff. I'd love to see something like this with like 0.5-1mm cf plates so the foam really provides the structural integrity and the carbon just keeps it stiff. If the whole thing is surrounded by impact absorbent foam you simply don't need to engineer the rest of it to crash into trees on it's own. What if: the body plates were thinner, the duct plastic was thin vacuum formed stuff, the foam was a strong and light low density EPO or EPP, the plates were 1mm and were glued in place (lets pretend building isn't an issue)?

    Thanks for the review, Bob! What I’m wondering regarding mega whoops, is it really a good idea to have them just look safe while carrying so much momentum. The carbon plates that sandwich the ducts are pretty exposed and if you crash into things they will probably leave marks just because of the energy it has with such high mass. You also mention washouts, which is interesting given the quad can produce quite a lot of thrust. I experimented with Cinewhoops myself, resulting in one built around 1306 4000kv motors. It carries a session and flies off 450mAh 4S packs with flight times about 4 minutes (and about 5:30 with 650mAh). I went full circle with ducts designing my own airfoil shape and managed to get 28% thrust increase for the same input power, but throttle response was horrible and it also had washouts, even weighing about 300 grams. So I scratched the idea and designed thin guards instead, and that changed things dramatically. It is reasonably quiet (you don’t immediately want to run away from that SCREECHING thing that a typical 500 grams Cinewhoop is), throttle control is amazing (it hovers at about 30%) and it weighs just about 290 grams with a Session. To me that is a much more viable option, and because of low weight it is actually safer. Check the details and pictures here if you’re interested rotorbuilds.com/build/20986

  • @Kabab

    @Kabab

    4 жыл бұрын

    The washout happens due to a lack of RPM range I believe. The ducts restrict things so much it literally doesn't have the reach to rectify. People's flight preference is different too. Some like the super shitty throttle response. Others won't have it. I hate it. But yeah these things only 'look' safe. They actually are safer too but we all know they're still not that safe and we must be careful. This one with it's foam bumper is pretty cool however. I must give them credit for that

  • @ErgoFPV

    @ErgoFPV

    4 жыл бұрын

    KababFPV yeah, using foam for “bumper” zones is pretty cool indeed. Doesn’t weigh much and kinda nice to the touch. Worth experimenting with, but mostly for the feeling of safety I guess. What would actually make Cinewhoops safer would be some setting in the firmware to prevent the quad freaking out and trying to autocorrect no matter what when you bump into things in acro mode.

    So, silly idea - would an ultra-lightweight prop with relatively aggressive pitch be able to compensate for that somewhat more? In every other regard, the guts of these are what I race as 3" quads on slightly more sane batteries (1408's, 4S 650/850 packs), so the inherent performance is there, just have to overcome airflow detachment because you can't actually pull a laminar column down at wildly different speeds that quickly - maybe overcompensate with stupid-light props that can make a big RPM delta happen easier?

  • @Kabab

    Yeah that's not me. I definitely don't hype quads. This one from diatone is not bad but it's overall performance is not very good compared to the CineSplore with the CineSplore drivetrain. The diatone thing is much more durable but that's also what leads to its poor performance. If you change the motors on the diatone thing to the CineSplore motors it's head over heels better but it's still not as good. Up to you. More durable or better performance. How much do you crash. The CineSplore is super repairable however. The diatone thing is not. You need to replace half the frame if it happens to break

    Have a read on the Stumax Aircraft SM110-52 edf system owners manual (stumaxaircraft.com). I build an 1950's Brittisch research jet Fairey Delta2 with this system a few years ago which shows the hydro-aerodynamics theory in static and flight . Noise level of this high power drive system is remarkable low. Vdo footage in on my channel. Last jet I build was the GlosterG40 (maiden footage at my channel too) which is by far the lowest noise output you will ever find (45dB surrounding noise, 54dB propulsion noise at 7 metres distance). These drive systems have been fine tuned in flight, not statically bench tested. Takes about 6 years fine tuning edf jets to get this silent and efficient. When you place an intake ring on the shroud you will gain a lot more efficiency and lift! Have a browse on the coanda effect to understand aerodynamic limmitations of this concept BUT it's quite ideal for cinematic footage. I have been flying edf (electric ducted fans) jets from 1999 which is a great area to explore and basically the same challenges as quads the power/weight ratio is a very thin line to do it right. I am still the only one to hit 300kmh with 650W input power where others need 3+kW. I'm highly amazed this technology hasn't been used in our whoops to yet. Ducted fans have better efficiency over open prop systems if engeneered right. The prop clearance you described is needed to cancel out tip turbulence coming from the airflow sticking to the shroud. The clearance is important for efficiency. BTW. 3 blade rotor and 3 fin stator is the loudest combo possible but very efficient if done right for high speed, not so for static thrust (Uriah-BU footage). Nice review!

    This is quite interesting. From what I understand about ducts the tip of the prop needs to be as close to the inside of the duct as possible for efficiency, the gap on this one is quite large. That might also explain why it’s very loud. In jet engines the tips of the blades are very close to the engine shroud. Jet engines have a system called Active Clearance Control which dynamically controls the tip turbine clearance. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Active_tip-clearance_control Why are cinewhoops taking over the world now? What’s so special about them?😛

    Your duct theory sounds like how EDFs work on planes. You have to think about 3 seconds ahead for throttle on EDFs because they spool up and down slowly and you certainly not expect the throttle to get you out of a low stall. Which is annoying because EDFs are normally heavy and unstable planes

    Not as good imo. The front end protection is far superior in this quad which is important when you run expensive dji gear and its ease of maintenance is better. The iflight has solid plates and looks like 10-15 screws to access anything. I'd happily take a few extra grams for a better design especially as I only record with the air unit so for me it's way lighter than having a GoPro on top. I have a 4s megabee at the moment but going to be building the taycan for 6s. Iflight make good gear but I think they're design is falling behind on this one.
