People make such a big deal of Patti showing up Diana here, but there’s no sense at all that Diana was bothered. She actually looks to be enjoying Patti’s performance. Truth is that Diana’s performance is quite effective. Her delicate treatment feels introspective, like a woman who’s almost lost hope that she might find love. Patti’s is the declaration of a woman who is intent on finding love. Most humans will experience the desperation Diana communicates, and hopefully they will also feel the empowerment that Patti personifies. Very different takes, both equally valuable. Just depends on what the listener needs at any given time. There’s no denying the rare power Patti possesses, and yet it’s undeniable that few singers possess an ability to emotional inhabit a lyric the way Ross does. Patti can blow you away like being on a rollercoaster ride that thrills you, but she doesn’t invite you in. Diana can’t blow you away, but she can take your heart on an intimate, emotional journey. Enjoy them both.

I come back this video a lot. They’re both strong in different ways. Patti is the thunder, Diana is the wind. Diana’s tone, precision, and pitch can’t be beat. Patti’s growl, strength, and head voice can’t be beat. Two different forces and masters at their craft.

"The Boss" knew what was up...she knew better than any of us, what you're supposed to do when its time to let The Godmother of Soul, sing...just hand her the mic' and get on out the way. And she did...she wasnt being nasty or shady or mean. Patti reached for the mic...Diana handed it to her, after a little mic' tease..and the rest is history. Lets just be grateful we lived during their respective eras. Diana, live in Central Park, is history. And Patti LaBelle's set at Live Aid, is legendary stuff.
