Mary's life was pretty much The Supremes. Diana Ross had moved on. Mary felt diminished and NO ONE likes that feeling, especially when she'd poured so much of her life into the legacy of the group. That had to be a huge ego bruise. Diana, I think, underestimated what Supremes fans (the GROUP fans, not just her solo fans) truly wanted due to the fact that she'd had such a huge career after leaving. I think also that was not an easy time for her--the '60s--yes it was her first success but there was an inordinate amount of pressure put on her during these years that some people don't appreciate because they think show business is all glamour, all the time. Because of this, HER memories may not be as happy as Mary's were. I wish there had been a smart mediator that both of them held in esteem that could have worked out the details. The promoters didn't seem equipped to handle this situation either. I mean, there have been many groups that have had bad blood between the members but found a way to work together (e.g. Fleetwood Mac). Had the promoters been smart they would have contacted someone in the business that had had experience in getting groups reunited.

I honestly feel that after the negotiations broke down, Ross should have forgotten the Supremes idea and just done a tour singing the songs herself. Furthermore, Mary had many hits with Jean Terrell and Cindy Birdsong. I’ve always been curious why THEY never reunited?

This is just another reason why I love her. I can honestly say she is telling the truth not saying that anyone else lied, just from whatever was rumored to be true. You can believe her emotions and details when she explains what happened. She got all the heat and blame causing her to have a real pitfall with an amazing and even better comeback!! People begged for another reunion since Motown 25. She tried her best and it is what it is now.

Success means nothing if you don’t have someone to share it with, love that movie. She is a mother. So after 85 she became a mother of 5. I can’t tell you how many people do that and still maintain their sold out audience around the world. Amazing artist.

You can really see Diana's ego in this video. Especially when she said Mary was singing "my songs". Anybody can sing those songs. Diana didn't write those songs; she has no rights to those songs. Mary is not jealous, she just feels disrespected and, rightly so.

@@erossinema8797 for Diana to achieve her level of success, unlike the other Supremes, it took a lil more than a wig & heels. Most breakout stars of groups, like D. R, tend to possess a stronger work ethic & a passion for performing than the other members. That's why the PUBLIC, who eventually become FANS, deems them the star, thus leading them to a solo career. I mean, history tells us this with Destiny's Child, The Jacksons, NKOTB, HM & The Blue Notes, "featuring", Teddy P etc. That's the reason they stand out. No matter how much ppl want them to be, the Supremes are no different.

I wonder what there relationship was like before she passed away. I hope they ended on good terms

@@cajayson8301 me too I've seen her twice in concert in 2015 and 2018 when she came to Hawaii what an entertainer in 2018 she did the Q&a and 2 encores. She was supposed have came back in 2020 for mothers day weekend but cancelled because of covid and soo far she hasn't rescheduled yet

Diana was given more because she was also financing the tour so the money She recieved was paying for gowns, musicianns dancers etc. The $ offered to Msry was hers to keep all she had to do was show up and sing. i can understand Mary not wanting to be employed by Diana Ross but I also I didnt hear Mary offering to co finance it with Diana either!

Well, what we've heard from both ladies concerning the mess surrounding RTL, is what it is: public statements! So we don't really know how they felt inside about the whole situation, and when they opened up a bit, it was embarrassing. The interview Diana gave on Barbara Walters and the one where Mary complained that "Diana never wanted to share" somehow left a bad taste and I think they did damage to the Supremes legacy. After all, this was not just about them or even their uplifting, classy , timeless music. It was about the fans, THEIR dreams and memories. People who back in the day embraced everything the Supremes stood for. They really should have shown more concern for them. In this regard, it was rather respectless by Ross to tour with two Ersatz Supremes, after negotiations with Mary and Cindy had broken down. To the dumbfounded fans who never had seen her on stage with these two singers before. And to Mary who in the early 70's had hired and trained them to be Supremes. After all, whom could she have fallen back on if not for Mary's work? My guess is, Diana never really wanted her on the tour. If she did she could easily have intervened when negotiations got stuck. Her claim she wasn't involved is utter bs imo.

Ersatz. Wow. Haven't heard that word in ages...They were not ersatz Supremes. They had signed contracts and recorded and performed with the group after Diana embarked on a solo career. The fact so many people think they were ersatz Supremes, just goes to show how disliked the 1970s Supremes were, with their constant personnel changes, incongruent stage presence and incohesive, bland sound. I found many of their vocals quite dreadful. They really should have changed the name because they sounded nothing like the 1960's Supremes, and overall people didn't like that.

They never had worked with Miss Ross before and joined long after the golden days were over. So what kind of "reunion" was that? Diana should have put her thinking cap on before she hired them. After negotiations with her former partners failed, she should have toured alone. Her fans would have been happy with it anyway. But when it comes to fans of her old Supremes days....of course they wanted to see the famous line-up they knew from their 60's heyday! Why would they accept two singers they probably didn't even know? What they ultimately got to see was meaningless for them, no matter how good the show was! The 70's group? You can't deny that they had a promising start, and all their lead singers were talented. But none of them brought to the table what the brand they had established in the 60's called for. You're absolutely right that they should have stuck to it. The problem was that Motown had built much of it around Diana, and once she was gone there was little left for the others to work with. And I don't see the main issue with personal changes.The line-up of a girl group is never stable. They aren't nuns who never marry to start a family. It is what it is. The bigger problem was the constant change of writers/producers. It never allowed them to develope a distinctive sound like they had for years with H-D-H. And exactly which of their many problems would a name change have solved? I don't believe the story that Motown sabotaged them, but they clearly were no longer a priority. In the 70's, the company mainly relied on acts who recorded their own material. They increasingly lacked the resources to provide hit songs, let alone a proper career stratey to keep them afloat. Even Diana's recorded output was a hit-and-miss affair. So sticking to an established name at least guaranteed bookings. Just look at the FLOS: Nearly half a century after the Sups disbanded, they still make a living out of a name they never helped build.

Mary later regretted this time. Mary could’ve been more cooperative. Diana was the lead singer, you know that. Mary was just bitter and learned to stand up for herself. But her decision at this time was a poor one. And Diana’s decision to proceed with the diet Supremes was a poor one. Stars just weren’t aligned around this time. Sucks

But… I think Diana should’ve stopped everything in its tracks, including the promoters, and accepted that Mary finally said yes. So ok, now I see where some of Mary’s regret later came from. I don’t think she should’ve been so difficult after Diana tried to help double the promoters offer from her own pocket. - what always gets me, is we never get to hear Cindy’s side of this. Wasn’t she being offered less?

How did Mary “know” Diana’s earnings would be 15-20ML dollars? Did Mary know what was being paid for out of Diana’s earnings? Was she aware that payment for every stitch of the stage gowns, hotels, makeup artists, touring entourage etc etc was being taken out of what Diana earned, whereas Mary’s earnings would be hers entirely, with nothing to pay for? Hence the reason Diana said that all Mary had to do was to show up. People will forever blame Diana for whatever has happened between herself and Mary, but ask Scherrie and/or Lynda about their time working with Diana, and it’s completely different from all the bs Mary talked about until her dying day. And of course Diana wanted to talk business; she is a damn good business woman, something that earned her the millions she’s worth today, but something Mary never really grasped.

Diana's earnings were widely reported at the time. As for Sherrie and Lynda's versions, they were pawns in the whole 2000 charade. They were of course thrilled to be part of the tour, but they must have known that most fans were not interested in this version of the Supremes. And they must have known that they were a big part of the reason that the tour flopped and was canceled. So if people "blame" Diana, there is good reason for that. As for being a good business woman, well a good business woman never would have gone ahead with the Supremes reunion tour without Mary and Cindy and Berry Gordy even advised her not to do it. But she did it anyway and we all know what happened. Mary was also worth millions when she died, and she did that on her own without all the promotion that Diana had.

Mary's memoirs turned out to not be so "nonsensical" and the public was not happy with what they learned. I am not sure how you figure that "Ms Ross did try" since Mary's version of events were much more believable than Diana's.

This had nothing to do with jealousy or bitterness. It had to do with fairness and treating people, especially an original member, meaning mary wilson with respect. Diana could have made it happen, but she didn't want to. So Diana got what she deserved. The reunion tour was a disaster. They had more than 30 shows booked, and because of poor ticket sales after 15 shows, the tour was canceled. Concert promoters said some of the arenas were half empty. All cause of greedy Diana not wanting to pay Mary & Cindy the money they deserved. Payback is a Bitch!!!!

I am SO GLAD that I saw the final lineup of Diana Ross & The Supremes in 2000. I was there! It was FABULOUS!!! Wilson was just a backing singer. Her absence was not important. After all, she never sang lead and there’s many Supremes hits that she didn’t even sing background on. The train had left the station for Wilson - then she boo-hoo’d her way to the press and lost out BIG TIME.

Respectfully, must we go there, Diana allegedly sold them OUT, the bottom line......Bye and get a life.....

If I had to pay to see Scherie & Lynda (who are SUPERB Supremes), it would have made better sense for them to go out with Mary since THAT was a real authentic lineup and they could sing THEIR songs from the 70s (MAN their act was FIRE in the 70s), instead of them "subbing" with Diana singing 60s songs...Scherie & Lynda were AWESOME Supremes...with Mary...in the 70s. Why would she even hire them to sing with her??? That was kind of a dig like "Mary won't stop the show, AND I'm gonna use HER girls..." I wish they could have fixed it before Mary passed. They were too old for this kind of carrying on...EVERYBODY KNOWS When you say "Diana Ross & The Supremes" that is Mary & Cindy. Period. And then honor Flo at some point in the show since she started the group...

Hi UncleDu. Your question should be answered by yourself ! Did you ever wonder why Mary Wilson (RIP) never reunited the Supremes of the 70' s (of which she was a part)? Because the promoters knew that without Diana Ross nothing could be organized. The Supremes were Diana Ross and Diana Ross was the Supremes!

But to think Mary and Cindy could be easily replaced on a "reunion tour" that was all about nostalgia, and then go on with two 70's Supremes she never had worked with before was just stupid. No matter how good those singers were, and they both were excellent, that's not the point. But for fans of the Supremes heyday, this line-up was just meaningless. They came to to relive THEIR memories, not hers. She should have realized that as the untimely halt of the tour proved. All the best and thanks for uploading!

@@erossinema8797 Do the business first without knowing what you are getting yourself into? Nobody in their right mind would do that. I never said it was Dianas fault. Mary didn't want "the moon", just a better deal, and Diana wasn't having it. So far no one is to blame. But to proceed with two 70's Supremes the audience hardly knew (two ladies Mary had hired and trained to be Supremes, btw), after all that talk of a "reunion"....and then scratch her head why her tour failed? Who is to blame that she underrated the importance of her former partners for a reunion tour?

I would have done it for nothing…lol

Sadly it was a lost opportunity. If Diana had been smart she would have told the promoters to split the up front money equally three ways. They stood to make much more money with merchandising, probably a live album and concert video which might have led to a new Supremes album, a network TV concert special etc., She blew it. Now it can never happen. I would not have paid a nickel to see Diana with the fake Supremes.

Because nobody heard of them and nobody cared. That is why the tour was a flop. Fans wanted Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong. Diana let her ego and greed cloud her judgement. @@erossinema8797

I couldn't stand Mary. Back in the day, Diana had a birthday party at Spago's in Beverly Hills. Mary tried to crash the party with her daughter. She was not let in. Entertainment Tonight was there and interviewed Mary outside the party.. Mary played the victim for the camera saying how cruel DianE was to not let her in (this was after Mary's tell-all book) and that Diana was even being mean to her own goddaughter. At that moment I saw that Mary would go so low as to use her own daughter to dog out DianE. She knew the public would believe any and all negative things about Diana and she milked it. It was a grotesque performance. Mary has her fans fooled. She is the kind that throws the stone then asks, I wonder who threw that?

She was a very classless woman---with her foghorn voice. No one with class would have been so proud to air their dirty laundry in a tell all book---two of them. All she could ever talk about is Diana Ross and the Supremes, yet every chance she got---she talked hot mess about Diana. Isn't it interesting how she never talked about the 1970's Supremes?

Y'all absolutely get on my nerves I know what a typical Diana stan is y'all take it as jealous and envious because you don't want to face the truth because you act like diana can't do no wrong and she didn't do anything wrong or hurt people including the two girls meaning Mary and Florence that she came up with Mary and Flo were the real founders when they first started out so you're wrong.

Mary's negativity and jealousy ate her up. Diana doubled the promoter's offer to a total of $6million to sing with Diana for 6 months and that wasn't enough for Mary? Mary only made $1million a year on her own doing the funnel cake circuit, meanwhile Diana sang for Kings and Queens. Who did Mary think she was, Diana Ross????

Mary was never offered 6 million!Diana doubled the two million to four million and Mary said yes but waited to late for Diana although Mary was within her time limit

In the long run, the fans were not having any of the nonsense. That's why out of 30 shows they had booked, they only performed 15 shows due to poor ticket sales and low attendance. So, in the long run, the fans didn't let it happen due to Diana's messy ways. The fans wanted to see a Supremes reunion, not a Diana Ross and two Supremes she never knew reunion. Diana tried to be slick and do a quick fix but fans said no. What they did to Florence was enough bull and they pulled the plug. Love it when fans get their way. 😊
