Umm, I am liking the idea of making a slow lapping disc machine. Interesting ideas. Thank you for sharing. All the best for the new year. Looking forward to watching you in 2022. Andrew 👍😀

Kev ! Early happy new year! Im so full of anti inflammatories and numbing stuff that you wouldn't believe how difficult it was to do that video. The magnet 🧲 word completely done me 🤣 Honestly, it's a good project. I'm shite at sharpening and this makes machining so much more enjoyable for me seeing clean cuts and good finishes.

HNY Paul! Thanks for the comments, the machine works well but really needs a bit of refining as per the comments in the video. Taken your advise and sorting out some stickers so you'll be getting email soon. I'll need your address again🙄. All contact details got wiped after an app update. Think I'll go low tech and use paper and pen for data storage from now on ! Cheers Neil

Very sensible design. Some very smart design cues. How about a little piece of sacrificial stainless for the grind surface?I do like the idea of milling the aluminum but I am lazy. All the best Dan

Thanks for the video. I actually use the same unit but have one of those disk on the high speed end for my scraper carbides.

@@NellsMechanicalManCave I have only tried the 3000 grit as I use for lapping as lots of others do and seems to be holding up OK. I think low speed is better though

@@homeworkshopengineering think you are right regarding the speed. Having a diamond cup or wheel as I now use is a god sent. I can make things sharp now, I'm good with drill bits but always been useless with lathe tools and such. I even touch up my carbide inserts now!

Cheers Ben ! I'll have to look for you. Did this ages ago so the listing I used might not be available any more. All I did was search diamond cup then diamond lapping disc on youtube to get the correct grit then got them off Ebay. Sorry I can't be any more help at the moment but,,,, just started my beer run which stops at midnight. Then I start my beer crawl ☺ Happy New Year and all the very best for 22👍👍

Hi Ben. Been looking for the listing. I got them in December 2020 and sellers no longer list them. What I used was. 1000 grit 4" diamond lap disc and a 75mm diamond grinding cup 180 grit. Hope this is of some help to you. Cheers Neil

Quick question. How do you find using a diamond stone for grinding HSS. I had read that HSS chokes a diamond stone. Or is that an misnomer? Andrew 🤔

  • @NellsMechanicalManCave

Hi Andrew. I think sharpening HSS with a diamond stone is ok. From what I can see, trying to grind it to shape would be a problem and it would block up. I've used the cup with success to lightly shape carbide inserts tungsten tip tools and also to finalize HSS. It hasn't lost any material or its edge. For less than a tenner, buy one. My first use was hand sharpening the kitchen knives 😁. HNY friend 👍😊
