Exactly, people say "Diablo has never had a good story" and I completely disagree. The second game had an amazing story, it just was told in a completely unique way.

My personal opinion is that the story of Diablo II was good. Not superb, but great for a videogame. But what it made it really awesome was how it was told. It was master storytelling for the medium (videogames). Diablo III history isn't really much better or worse... but it's told in a terrible way that makes it unbeareable. And the details, the dialogs... are horrible. But the overall story isn't much better or worse. But that's it... in the end a story is only as good as it's narrator... and Diablo II was an excellent narrator. Of course, the game isn't story focused, it's more grind based. But the story is here to put the tone and it does it wonderfully.

Also, the graphics were incridble for 2000. I mean look at it. Doesn´t even look bad today. It was the same with Warcraft 3. Blizzard games are often so far ahead of their time, it is unreal.

Of what I remember from watching a playthrough of it, Diablo III suffered from exposition overload. It also had some pretty hackneyed writing, not just bad delivery. I always remember one specific moment when an undead ghost king (Leoric?), appears for a second to say "you will never defeat me," and then disappears again. Someone at Blizzard actually wrote that, and thought it was necessary to put in the game. It's no wonder Starcraft 2's story turned out how it did.

@@-Gurza- also when Azmodan, who is supposedly the best strategist of the burning hells, has been giving you ideas on what he's actually plotting to do. I mean cheezaz, you are a strategist and by default a good tactician as well. Why feed info to your enemy? In D I, you decipher information through town gossip and scared tomes. Everything is left for you to guess. In D 3, everything is a dead give away. Way too much gerrymandering.

Maybe Marius wanted to personify or describe the shift he saw in his companion. From a weakish and lanky person walking or moving at a deadish snail pace till that point was now suddenly invigorated with energy and moving at a speed more akin to the wanderer's age or rather Aidan's age. A sharp change from his former drained out speed to rushing over towards an inhuman screaming tree holding a skeletal man may seem demonic to an observer and for good reason.

That's what I said when I beat D3 and saw the ending. Diablo and Diablo 2 are about LOSING. Shit is perpetually going to literal hell, and you're always two steps behind trying to triage, to staunch the bleeding and put out what fires you can. But it's never a happy ending. D1 ends with the protagonist sacrificing himself to HOPEFULLY MAYBE contain Diablo for JUST A LITTLE LONGER. D2 ends with Baal getting his soulstone back and being set loose. LoD ends with the heart of the world being sacrificed with no knowledge of what that might do to the world. Then D3 ends with honest to god bright shiny sunlight and gleaming gold and triumphant music. I like the game itself, but what the hell, D3? There was some cool dark imagery, particularly when Leah becomes Diablo and fights Imperious, but it's not of the gothic Lovecraftian horror we got in D2. Marius wondering, almost asking himself "Why did I follow him?", then answering in the most defeated tone, "I don't know," gives me chills every time. "Always... into the east." "What could I do? I ran." Oh my god, this writing was so good. I love me some angel/demon smackdown, but it doesn't stack up against the sheer feeling I get from these lines.

My take was that it's one thing to be hopeless, but if you make things too hopeless, no one is going give a damn about anything anymore. You won't even bother doing anything to fight back and just let Hell kill everyone. It's a pessimist's wet dream. Remember even Path of Exile, the successor to Diablo, while being hopeless overall, made sure that you still actually made a positive difference in some way. D1 and D2 just screams "nothing you do ever matters, you are just wasting your time." The overall darkness and hopeless has effectively crossed the line from "mature" to "edgelord's wet dream". If it wasn't for the WorldStone releasing the seals on humanity's power, no one would've bothered playing a game that essentially never lets you win in any meaningful way.

I love Marius' place in the game. He serves as a foil/counterpoint to the PC of the game. Paralleling what you did, where Marius sat back and watched everyone get slaughtered, you reclaimed the citadel. Where he failed to enter the portal, you did. Ultimately you redeem Marius by the end by finishing what he couldn't. I think its really important to do this for world building purposes, to make Marius so weak puts you into the world where the stakes are real and the average person is helpless against the forces of Hell, and it works as a backdrop to add to the power progression the player goes through, where Marius descends into damnation and eventual death, the player becomes a world saving hero by the end.

A lot of people don't understand that the concept in Diablo has changed since the world stone has been destroyed. In Diablo 3 the nephalem can achieve power even greater than those of the archangels and prime evils. The naphalem in Diablo 2 had limited capabilities so the atmosphere had to be dark and scary, which would represent the emotions of the hero.

It cannot be overstated how important this game was to me as a kid. I remember a time in my life where even when not playing the game I would run through these cinematics in my mind over and over again. I loved this game, its atmosphere and its setting so damn much. It is interesting coming back to view them like this, they bring forth a lot of emotion and memories. Had a troubled home, and no internet or ability to play D2 at home. However I would spend all my afternoons at the local netcafe playing D2 and Counter-Strike, and often even the weekend nights as well. It was one of the primary ways I got away from it all. Only way I could afford all that time at the netcafe was because I was on their tournament team in Counter-strike and got free time "for practice," but honestly I would spend most of that time on D2 instead.

I just feel sorry for Marius. You can hear the pain in his voice. I think Tyrael asking him to take the soulstone through a gate into hell was too much for a mortal. Every human being is afraid of death, and on top of that if he were to die in hell (which is more than likely considering that it is hell) his soul would be trapped there forever and the angels wouldn't come to save him. I say that's pretty fucked up. Then after just trying to survive and find a quiet place to live, Baal comes and kills him, sending his soul to hell anyways. This all happened to some random guy that happened to meet the dark wanderer. He didn't choose to align himself with the prime evils, but he paid the price for it anyways. As a game, it is fun, but if I was in Marius's shoes, I probably would have run too. It's a good thing we don't live in sanctuary because that would be a horrible experience.

This is precisely what made D2 epic my friend. The story was not accounted by the heroes or the villains but an innocent bystander who unwillingly and unwittingly got dragged into a centuries old battle. As far as Marius' fate in the story goes, he had already doomed himself when he decided to tag along with the Dark Wanderer. No offense but did he expect a bag of cookies with a pat on the back in the end? He literally followed a guy that torched an entire inn, killed people, and summoned hellish monsters right in front of his eyes. Clearly, he should have known that he had a purpose which is why Diablo didn't kill him (yet) and that after he did his part, he would die.

I like to think that the green hologram that escapes the wanderer (Act I) is the soul of Adrian which tries to avoid hurting anyone. Diablo finally manages to cast his soul out (temporarily) and blaze the whole area. As soon as Adrian's soul returns, the wanderer calms down signifying that even with a Prime Evil possessing the entirety of his being, Adrian is still trying to fight, albeit a futile fight. It's little things like this, such symbolism in cinematics that made D2 epic. These cinematics scared the crap out of my 10-year old self but at the same time I wanted to play more, explore more, fight, conquer. I'd feel like a real warrior fighting evil back then lol. D3 wasn't that bad for game play but it didn't establish that good a mental connection with me. Even looking at diva Diablo, I wasn't scared anymore, I was like 'Meh..' D3 showed me that Diablo was not real and that the story was set in some fictional sanctuary and that the heroes fighting were not exactly humans. But D2? It had no lore on sanctuary or any major mention of the nephalem which made me believe it could be real. It was relatable. Demonic possession is what I had heard of, every character class had simple skills with no glitz or glamor and I struggled, yes really struggled against some bosses. The difficulty, the stakes, and unimagniable peril was translated to me as a gamer by the difficulty of the game itself. Diablo never speaks anything beyond as few words in the cinematics, we see him 90% of the time as a Dark Wanderer cloaked from head to toe but he still scared me. It's the little done in moderation that sometimes makes the sweetest recipe. Hopefully Blizzard will realize where they erred and rework their plans for D4, if it is ever made. This grunge, dark, demonic story, the simple game play but unforgiving difficulty and the epic musical score is what we need. So long Diablo...you will forever be missed. :')

The plot surrounding the fight to control the Worldstone maps perfectly onto books like Eric Voegelin's "Science, Politics, and Gnosticism" and Glenn Alexander Magee's "Hegel and the Hermetic Tradition." The heavenly counterparts to those being titles like "Orthodoxy" and "The Everlasting Man" by G.K. Chesterton.

It's really a shame that D3 didn't have the length of cinematics D2 did. There are a few cines, but for the most part it's some animated cartoons with narration. Unlike most fans, I do like D3's gameplay (mechanics and style etc), but D2 had the most dark and soul gripping story behind it which was demonstrated in these killer cinematics. D3 was seriously lacking in that category. It's mainly Tyrael ripping his wings and Imperius dying. Both cool scenes, but they really needed more.

I want a game like d2 back.with a storyline. a skill tree you can choice by ur self what you want to do and what not,AND you sometimes have to think about what to skill a game you dont spend 50% of the play time with charakter design. a game with usefull chatrooms and a funy+frendly community. a game that isnt Pay to win. a game you can fail so hard that you just have to start from the beginning. a game that is created like a good dark fantasy book if you know what im talking about :D a game that isn´t so easy that you dont have to know something and finish it in 1 day a game where you have to play jeahrs to reach the highest level (if you got the time and dont die[i hate corpse explosion] ) a game with upright walking cow´s mo moo mo moo mooooo
