As funny as your idea is, I'm pretty sure Baal conjured the illusion to look like Tyrael himself. It wouldn't be the first time he used illusions (that would be in the Tomb of Tal Rasha), or the last (that would be in the Worldstone Chamber).

I think its more the fact that it sounds like something that's new. If you showed someone who has never seen Diablo they would say this was just made. The audio syncing has nothing to do with it however. They just made the animation to match the audio (also they had a template to work off of) and that's how most animation audio matches. At least with voices any ways, otherwise you would never get a mouth to truly sync up. But, yes the audio is fantastic and even the old cinematics look good.

Sound design and music was stellar in original game; in-game and in the cinematics as well. And they still are 20 years later considering the technology available at the time. I agree that they have really cranked up the audio with higher sample rates, detailed ambient, deeper bass and some more modern tweaks here in the resurrected version cinematics. Changes are noticeable if you are familiar with the original game and have a decent setup for audio. The sync with the new animation is usually pretty simple: it is done by syncing the separate audio/music/dialogue tracks with the fresh animations. Or change the speed or animation to match it as closely as possible to the characters whether possible :)

Diablo II cinematics are easily some of the most heartfelt and beautiful in the HISTORY of gaming. I will never forget the emotion I felt when Baal and Diablo overtake Tyrael in ACT II. Or The Wanderer (our hero from the first Diablo) finally loses his battle with evil and transforms into Diablo. The final cinematic from which the worldstone is destroyed and that goosebump inducing score takes places. They did an excellent job transforming these older cinematics into modern works of art. Although I will not say they are perfect regarding some minor changes in scenes and sound that is a little off in places. Otherwise, a phenomenal job. Can't wait to see everyone on the battlefield of sanctuary tomorrow. I feel like I'm 12 years old all over again and it's an exciting time again to be a gamer.

Agreed. In my opinion, the resurrected cinematics are a separate piece of art and a new interpretation of the original game cinematics 20 years ago. I still prefer the old ones. I don't care much about "graphical fidelity", and more about artistical merit. Sure, art is subjective. And I can only give my opinion (subjective perspective) on it. So: I think that except of the epilogue, Marius got kinda ruined because of the lack of expression. I've seen people saying that it is more realistic now, but I think that it is the entire opposite. His expressions makes it seem much more like he is having some kind of inconvenience than, I don't know, maybe literally reflecting the fact that he saw dozens of innocent people getting murdered by demonic forces and indescribable infernal horrors? He literally carries the fate of the world within the stone that he did not have the courage to destroy, because it involved going to hell, but he looks like he just feels uncomfortable because he peed his pants. A real person on that situation would have a bit more of facial expression, wouldn't they? Also, some smaller details. Tyrael's armor was just turned 100% power fantasy. He is just enormous with big, exaggerated armor. And to be honest, they butchered his wings. What made him feel so ominous and beautiful was how immense and detailed his wings looked. Baal's walk after killing Marius also just ruined it for me. The original angle was perfect, and it was even kinda slowed to add dramatic effect. It looked so perfect that I used a screen capture from that scene as my steam profile for many years. Diablo walking towards the portal made he seem HUGE on the original. And now, the things that I think got really improved: Tal Rasha, Mephisto and Baal looks UNBELIAVABLY good. I can't even describe how perfect Baal is. Also, Mephisto got pretty disgusting. The way his loose skin flails in the ritual scene is horrible. I loved it. The scene where Baal kills Marius got completely terrifying. But overall, they kinda ruined what they just couldn't. Marius is the guy telling the story. If you can't get invested on him, it defeats a lot of the immersion. I remember how much I felt sorry for him on the original when he described the gathering on the third act. Hearing his voice break like that made me associate it with that small, fragile, broken man, and it felt so cruel. Now, he just seems... fake. I can't empathize with a character that don't react to emotions. And it's more sad when you compare it with the absurd voice acting. But hey, I still would give it an 8 out of 10 for just how beautiful and well done it is, overall. Just a shame that something so small breaks it so much for me.

There’s a VG news content creator called Bellula (think that’s the spelling). He explained that there was a lot of interference from Activision that killed a lot of the games potential. It was only going to get them millions in terms of profit, not billions, so they saw it as a lost cause and cut the funding. They only gave them a year to wrap it up and used the profits from preordering reforged on other projects instead of the actual game itself. Some of the devs aren’t off the hook either, but the biggest strides came from Activision.

My main beef with the new intro cinematic would be the shot of Bale assuming Tyrael's form: in the old version, it truly looked confused and spectral, like an apparition, something wonderful, either angelic or daemonic. In the new version, that sense of mystery is gone, he looks like a big generic Blizzard character with giant cartoonish fingers and shoulderpads, might as well be Buzz Lightyear. I also find both hooded-Bale and the wanderer a bit too "human" in this version. Their taller silhouette and slightly unnatural movement in the old cinematics made them way creepier.

As much as i love these remastered cinematics i don't like one thing about them. Tyrael looks here like in diablo 3, i know it's still an amazing design but in original diablo 2 you could feel that he's a being from different realm, like everytime he was present he was very blurry and he's wings seemed to have no end. You could feel that he didn't belong there

Mixed feelings about this one. I feel that they subdued Marius' body language a bit too much, and took away a lot of the drama from the Kurast temple bit by removing Mephisto's facial animations and the weight from Diablo's footsteps that made everything shudder in the original. You can't even make out the screaming faces of the portal. However, Baal looks fucking fierce, especially in the LoD intro, and the early acts really benefit from the effects reboot. And I'm of course pleased to see they stuck to the source material extremely closely.

Absolutely agree with everything you said. Watching Marius was harder this time around because you couldn't feel his desperation and anguish in his facial features nearly as much. Diablo looks amazing, but his presence isn't felt with the ground shaking beneath him. He didn't feel as "powerful". And Mephisto's body language was kinda half-assed with his opening sentences seemingly not lining up properly in the animation.

I'm also on the fence, don't get me wrong it's mind blowingly impressive but there's a few artistic flairs they threw in which I think spoil it. That silly little roar Diablo makes as Mephisto talks to him before entering the portal... why??! Another is Bhaal revealing the Marius that he's not Tyreal.. with a little horror-face flash over him, just not needed. Lastly Tyreal looks fucking amazing graphically updated but I much preferred his trippy jelly wings that spread over the entire shot, and they removed his burning-white aura when we get a front look at him before he chants to bless his sword before hurling it. I feel like that kinda gave him that other-worldly godlike feel and they took it away :( Nit picky things but yeah still very impressive and nice to see.

Baal's facial expressions and gestures are actually drastically toned down in this new LoD intro cinematic. I prefer the cheekier shit-eating grin and flamboyance that the Baal in the old LoD intro cinematic had.

I'm disappointed because they removed Baal's body gestures so instead of expressing his eccentric character on the very first up close shot, he looks instead like a bored demon. I missed him silencing the echos with just the snap of a finger, and feels odd that they would draw the bridge to an army of demons.

Most cutscenes are amazing. Especially the last two. But they tend to cut away often at good, gory, and more cinematic stuff like Act3 Tyrael's white/shiny/blurry delirious speech at Marius Act4 Wanderer's skin being rip asunder from within. Epilogue's Diablo body exploding/gibbing, Baal's walking off the burning asylum at slow-mo *and low FPS* Act5 Emisary's eardrums bleeding, and Baal's army charge.

  • @ashrasmun1

The change in Act V was very positive - the "eardrums bleeding" that you described is unbelievably annoying for people suffering from tinnitus. I'm really happy they removed that effect. I don't however understand why they made Baal do some weird gesture with it's hand while it's clear he tried to hush down the voice in the original with specific gesture.

@@ashrasmun1 I don't get your first statement, both are sign / symptom respectively that can or not be related (often not) depending on the illness responsible, and even then, we're talking about very loud, mountain-shaking levels of decibells beating down on a poor mortal's eardrums, hearing bones, and cochlea of course they're gonna be shattered... hell poor man should start suffering from vomit and vertigo right away. Anyway, about the gestures, yeah he does wave his head and hands in the original cutscene but not that much. This could also be because they've messed around the camerawork at some parts.

A few things I noticed: 1.I like how the intro cinematic gives off a slightly different feel to Marius then the original. Whereas there he was fidgety and shaking to give off the feeling of someone who was on the verge of madness, but forced himself to remain vigilant Here, he seems like a half-dead, beaten and tired old man keeping himself alive out of obligation to guard the soulstone , even if it is draining what little strength he has left 2.In the act 3 cinematic, I like that they slowed down the fight between Diablo and Tyrael, to make it seem that Tyrael wasn't just wasting time swinging wildly but was actually going for the kill and would have succeeded if Marius hadn't pulled out the soulstone 3.In the Act 4 Cinematic, I felt like it wasn't as epic as the original cause the screams of the damned souls are basically inaudible most of the time, plus they added more sound effects to Mephisto's voice which honestly took away from how good his voice actor's performance is (the voice of Grandpa Max from Ben 10 ironically) 4.In the epilogue, I feel like the model didn't quite match the pain and anguish the voice actor was portraying ( 60's Batman's Riddler, no really, look it up) Whereas in the original this was a lot better as he was fidgeting , drooling etc 5.And in the LoD cinematic where we see Baal for the first time in his real form, if you look at his face you'll notice that its the skin of Tal'Rasha's face torn and stretched from his transformation. You can even see the line where it ends, leatherface style And its a nice piece of characterization too, cause it shows how petty Baal is. He is literally wearing the face of the man who helped imprison him out of spite, even tho his soul is long gone 6.And in the final cinematic there's a slight stutter at the very beginning, likely a reference to how the original was

Another interesting detail added is that in the Act 5 intro cinematic. Baal's army being in much higher detail actually shows in-game enemies standing ready (the spike maulers and the reanimated horde skeletons). In the original, the only troops that had enough detail to barely be discerned were the clan lord minotaurs, who don't even show up in the first segments of the act.
