Awesome how he is great and yet teaches. Once that strap goes on, you can instantly see his instincts kick in and the aggression that he has deep within come to the surface. He is a straight beast.

I always hear "climb higher" on the hand but I don't understand why. What does that do from a mechanical standpoint

You put more pressure on the fingers of your opponent. It's becoming hard for your opponent to express strength with their fingers than with their whole hand.

Think of your opponent's arm as a door with the elbow being the hinge. If you've ever tried to open a door by pushing near the hinges, it's difficult. But the further away you get from the hinge, the more leverage you have and the easier it is to open the door. So climbing higher on your opponent's hand increases your distance to their hinge (increasing your leverage) while simultaneously forcing them to grab lower, worsening their leverage.
