Casale: "Well, we did see a cut of it, and personally, I realized it was one man's idea of Devo, you know, that didn't live our life and take our artistic journey and wasn't around for that journey. And so I just suspend my disbelief, like you often do when you see a movie, because it wasn't really me, it was someone else talking about me."
Mark Mothersbaugh: "Gerry in particular has a very tight idea of what he remembers DEVO as. And it's interesting because, you know, I could see people doing 20 different documentaries about Devo, and they would all be valid because they would have somebody's point of view where they saw DEVO through whatever angle they were watching. And that's what's relevant. And so it's all interesting to me."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Devo (L-R) Bob Mothersbaugh, Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh, recording artists:
Casale: "My gosh. Well, just imagine being too idiotic to let go of your vision. It didn't matter. It didn't matter to me. I never had any doubt."
Mark Mothersbaugh: "Yeah, I mean, we loved what we did. I mean, we did always feel like subversion worked for us. You know, it was like a song, like 'Whip it,' it was benign and a dance club hit that helped us work our way into the system. So you know, we always like subversion."
Casale: "Freedom of choice is what you've got. Freedom from choice is what you want. We sang that, and we sang that at a time when the country was taking a right wing turn with Reagan and televangelist people. And now here we are again today and it's ten times worse."

Casale: "They have more tools at their disposal than we ever had. If they wanted to do it, they have to have the will and they have to have the guts."

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Chris Smith, director:
"You know, I don't really think about any of those things when we start. I think we just sort of collect material and sort of just try to understand what appeals to us in terms of, you know - yeah, it's a complicated process. And I think the nice thing, the thing I love about documentaries is that every one is unique and every film is unique. And this one, we ended up being really inspired by some of the music videos that they had done and used that as a stylistic approach for the film. So it was unlike anything we'd done before because it was, you know, influenced and inspired by work that they had done."

(Reporter: "Did they give any input during the doc process or did they watch it at the end?")
"No, they saw it at the end, yeah. Yeah, yeah. You know, I think Gerry's observation was, you know, you could cut ten, ten different movies from the archive of their career and this is one version of that story. And while he appreciated that, he's like, you know, it'd be fun to see the other 4 or 5."
