You should check out “Why” by Devin. It’s a great example of how good his vocal range is.

Devin Townsend is the single greatest musician on the planet. He has no formal vocal training. Back in the early '90s, while Devin was singing for Steve Vai, he went to a vocal doctor who told him that if he continued to sing the way he does that he would permanently lose his voice within two years. Now, 25+ years later, his voice is stronger than it has ever been.

Devin Townsend's one of those people that I also enjoy listening/watching interviews with him as well as his music. He's a very introspective, thoughtful, fascinating, humorous, playful personality, which you get some of in this performance. Saw him live a long time ago and that came across on stage. It was so fun.

Devin is one of the few singers who could sing you to sleep with one breath and terrify you with the next one, he is one of the most versatile males singing today, he writes some wonderfull songs with a massive variation of styles and tones. I first came across him singing with Steve Vais band Vai and he blew me away back in the 90s, his solo stuff is amazing, his style is very expressive and can have an awesome hard edge. Devin is just an amazing artist

I keep coming back for your reaction. I enjoy your personality. Your face is extraordinarily expressive. Enjoyed your singing videos also. You are very talented. Can't wait to see what you do next. Have a great rest of the day.

Yup. Got to see him live. Changed out of his pants into a tutu on stage. Best concert ever.

Devin is the deadpool of metal.

Some of those falsetto parts were originally sung by Anneken van Ginsbergen... which makes it more impressive.

Devin does for 2 hours a night without issue on long tours. You can growl safely.

I saw him few years ago. I was 2 ft away . it was so EPIC. I was in a trance.

"Steve Vai" & "Devin Townsend" the Sex and Religion album is great, a few videos off that album exist, "Deep Down Into the Pain", "In My Dreams with You" are a couple 🤘

Congrats on hitting 50. You once asked me what sort of music I'd like you to react and respond to. . That's a really difficult question. God there are so many talented amateur out there I'm currently listening to on you tube who are doing incredible covers and rearrangements that I've difficulty picking one so I'll go with the one that hit me emotionally and left me wanting more. If you're ready here it is Kaitlyn Schmit covers Concrete Blondes Joey. This is an iconic song that few people can do justice to and this lady with the help of a number of people from other local Nashville bands absolutely nails it. I don't know the name of the other lady who sings with her but my god it's bloody brilliant. If you get the opp check it out on youtube. Lottsa' love and great things for you. Peace out from Oz.

Maggie is surprised by the fact it's the third take and his voice is perfect. Third take. Three songs. Well, Devin Townsend sings during two hours or more in his tours and is always fresh and perfect.

Devin is just one of those unbelievably talented singers that can just impress anyone. A singers singer if I may say so.

I love your authentic face expressions, yes the singer is free but I can clearly see it's all there inside of you as well.

You gotta watch the retinal circus performance. If you love devin this way, you'll love how he has so many become part of his shows and how much of a caring person he is

Lol. If there are parts in this Devin vocal performance that scare you I suggest you check out a piece from his first SYL record - just search for Happy Camper (Carpe B.U.M.) by Strapping Young Lad.

It's not take number 3... he said so himself... lol (that would imply he messed it up twice already) There is a new(ish) interview with him and Elizabeth Zharoff (The Charismatic Voice) and it is a really interesting look into who Devin is as a person. That was my exact reaction the first time I heard this song.

Mike Patton is another vocal gymnast you should explore. He's in about 500 different bands but I recommend Tomahawk - God Hates a Coward (live) for insanity. And just about anything by his band Faith No More is a sure fire hit.

Very happy you reacted to Devin, hes awesome. Next is some Opeth with Michael, that’s going to throw you off when you hear what he does. Perhaps ghost of perdition, the Baying of the hounds, Harlequin Forest, the Drapery Falls, Hessian Peel, Deliverance. Ok I went too long with song suggestions, there’s a bunch more, but I don’t have time for that right now 😊

I love how tou talk about the growling and stuff. Personally i can't really sing. It takes me a lot of work to find the right notes and pitch and stuff. Also my voice doesn't really sound great. But growling and grunting i can actually do without any problems and it actually sounds pretty good for metal genres. I really don't know how but it took a lot of practice and it literally sounds pretty nice. I think that's kinda funny

Interestingly, that sympathetic clench you did when you heard the screams is what made me take *years* to learn how to do this kind of scream safely. It takes relaxation and it just doesn't sound like it!

You should check out his band Strapping Young Lad and their version of Judas Priest's 'Exciter", he gave Priest a run for their money on that one.

I didn't know Voldemort was such a great musician.

Devin is the same in live settings. Check out "Deadhead live at Albert Hall" to see him make fun of his audience (because they deserved it lol) There's also footage of him dicking about with his audience while technical difficulties fail to be solved on a live gig in, I think, Barcelona... He really is a great character, thriving in absolute chaos...

if you're impressed he could sustain that on the third take you should see "deadhead" live at the albert hall, 2 hrs already into the set, AND he had laryngitis! Kingdom on EMG was nothing lol

Must be a reason why folks recommended this song ;-) As far as I know this is a lovesong, written to his wife. So: "Lord" in this lyrics is a metaphor. More Devy: you might wanna watch "Deadhead". Rumor I heard: he went to a vocal coach at the start of his career. Vocal coach: "Go on singing like this for 2 more days: your voice will be damaged for the rest of your life." Well, that must have been some 1990-ish. More Canadian bands: pls try "Unleash The Archers". Maybe: "tonight we ride". I bet it'll not be disappointing. Greetings from the far north of Germany!

Compare some of the Devin Townsend Project or Causalities of Cool, against the insanity of Strapping Young Lad. The first SYL album had 99 layers of guitars lol. He's a genius in music, not just Metal. I would say him and Mike Patton are the two most strongest and versatile vocalists in Rock, Metal and Alternative music.
