Firstly I know this vid has been up for a few years now BUT, I have a pair of reactors and I LOVE EM, but I have always thought these are great so the big ones must be fabulous....... But thanks to your comparions (which I listened to with my reactors) I have decided to stay with the small ones. I am able to get a great deal on two phantom opera's BUT I think what I already own is nicer to listen to. I am not really into massive bass music (my neighbours probably aren't either), so you have saved me quite a bit of cash. I do find to get the best out of em you do need to give em a bit of stick (volume up) which I do from time to time but normally they are always playing mainly in the background. I have had mine for three years and never had an issue................... Again thankyou for your timely vid (for me) lol.

timlukas1 why’s it the best decision? I’ve not listened to either but even I know that a more expensive product within a product range will be better sounding. So of course the Golds are better sounding but are they worth paying an extra £2400? That’s a massive amount of extra money required for the Golds....listening to this video the Golds sound slightly better but it’s not a night and day difference. Suspect the choice depends on your room. In large rooms the Golds will be better in smaller rooms the Reactor is much better value and the best choice for most people.

Except for very specific use cases, two smaller Phantoms will be superior to a single large one in most cases. Sound field will be more immersive and of course you can achieve true two channel stereo effects. Same goes for subwoofer configurations btw (people ask this question all the time) - two smaller subwoofers will sound better, provide better coverage, smooth out the null spots better compared to a single large one (even if the single subwoofer’s specs match up in wattage to the two smaller ones combined).

You can turn off a premier phantom, just hold the button for about 9 seconds and it moves the woofers with a sissing sound. And now have turned it off. To put it back on again just press the button once and after a few seconds the woofers will move and it's on.

In my ears the big one sounds round with nice hights and good mids. The small one sounds muddy, the hights are not as clear as the ones of the big one and the mids of the small one sounds hollow. Interesting is that the base quality is nearly equal. The big one reaches deeper but the difference is not that big as the difference in size. Heard through Sennheiser HD58x.

Nice review! Phantom seems flat, reactor warm, while they seem to have similar tweeter size. I suspect that Reactor may be better for nearfield, low volume listening. I'm interested in KEF EGG, any chance for a review or some opinion about them? I'm interested because they seem perfect for my conditions, small desktop, close to wall, small room. I've checked for alternatives but they are simply too large, or require distance from back wall, or come with back port design, or are too expensive etc.

just bought the new phantom reactor ii and came across your video. It seems the larger one has more treble / highs so therefore is clearer with vocals The bass seems to be very similar between the both. Obviously, the larger one is the winner for volume and the smaller one has a lesser frequency response for high sounds. I imagine that with two of the small reactors they would equal the large version for quality low volume sound if you have music recorded in a certain way. I use Flac lossless sound record all my vinyl onto high resolution mp3 files. Depending on the genres of music you play(ed) there is a significant difference in the highs. I guess that is what one pays for. With the ‘Anna Rigby’ song, i could not hear any difference however. So I am glad i did not have to rob my bank to purchase the large version! Great concise video comparison. You have a fan now. And your choice of music is exceptional. Your choices were ideal I am a music collector since 1982. Yes ‘82 ! Eventually, I will have to invest in another phantom reactor ii

Does anyone have any tips for maintaining a consistent stereo connection. I use a Bluetooth connection with my mobile to play music. Both reactors are plugged into the same wall socket and my network interface on both reactors is set to WI-FI. Ive tried Auto and PLC, they both drop out. Funny thing is, that its always my right side speaker that drops out, yet my Devialet app says the left side speaker is missing. Very strange. Any help would be much appreciated.

I own two phantom golds with the dialog and get a good experience with the latest firmware. The issue for me is the volume control without the dedicated remote they sell. If you are for instance using the volume on your phone the steps are too much. With the devialet remote the steps In volume are much finer. It’s really needed for the speakers. Luckily using the remote means it just takes over the volume from the phone and you can even see the volume bar moving up and down. If you use the spark app it shows you the volume as a percentage of 100. I use Qobuz a lot directly over AirPlay and it’s great. The speakers also work great with Apple TV. The android experience has not been so good for me.

Smaller one has more lower midrange honkyness making it sound a bit more boxy. Treble is a bit more reserved and less detailed as well. Bass extension is impressive though, something these speakers have always excelled at. I like the fact the small one has compensation for lower level listening. Though my budget would point me towards the small one LOL. Studio monitors excel for price to performance but these are elegant and hard to beat for the size.

Well i'm disppointed … the reactor have a huge lack of clarity and definition to the sound … bass are impressive , OK BUT ( exept for those JBL lovers ) the bass response isn't making the sound quality … i would have prefer less bass and more mids and highs on the reactor but it's the complet opposite !

In my experience the Reactor has more mids and highs than bass. I've just gotten my Reactor today and I'm going to return it for the larger more fuller sound of the Phantom Classic.

Very nice review / comparison of those Devialet speakers, also good music tracks all along. Good job, keep it up ! I have a pair of white 900 Reactors on their "tripods", a perfect fit I think for my listening room size : Love the sound of them :-) I use the Reactors in an analog way, they are connected to my Mytek Brooklyn DAC+. Musical sources are an Apple MacBook Air / Audirvana / Synology DS218+ 2x4TB NAS (great quantity of Hi-Res files), and one Nuprime CDT-10 CD transport for my discs collection. All connections with high quality cables. Good sounding speakers are the key for a top audio system !

14 hz and 16 hz. What a ridiculous specification! At -70 dB perhaps. Hearable are 20 hz (very weak). The big one might go doewn to hearable 28 hz, the small one maybe to 45 hz wich would be a very good behavior for a small speaker like that.

Jörg Bornefeld I wouldn’t be so sure. It’s not unrealistic for a speaker like this to reach those numbers if you give it enough power. It’s definitely not the best method to get deep bass but when I measured it it worked. I have a video for that coming soon.

45hz? No, look at frequency graphs for it, they can actually do it. Check out peter pee’s reactor 600 vs sonos fives and you’ll see. 14 and 18hz is measured at -6db

@@jorgbornefeld1689 the reason it can do it is because of how much power it uses. A normal speaker this size is not doing 18hz. my 350w sub can do 18hz but you can barley hear it. it has a 10 inch woofer. that uses size to give the sub bass. not so much power. the phantom II is 6 times smaller and uses two 4 inch woofers with more power of 400W peaking at 900w. it uses high pressure in the small chamber to create what a larger cabinet could do. look at the kef k62 subwoofer. it uses dual 6.5 inch drivers but there being driven at 1000w rms and its a 10 inch cube and it can do 11hz. SVS PB16-Ultra 16 is 1500w and cant even play that deep and it has a 16 inch driver and weights as much as i do. the Phantom speakers just force the drives to play that low with loads of power.

To understand how it works, Peak is like redlining a car, you know it will kill the engine, but RMS is before the redline and will run without fail, And I have had the Gold phantom running maxed out for 7 hrs straight without fail, If it was peak it would have killed the speaker, and the speaker is designed to run maxed out without fail. Or people will be returning them because the speaker has blown.

Also, you can tell the diff between peak and RMS, as peak the speaker would distort maxed out, and the speaker doesn't at all.
