Developing Your Own Pocket On The Drums
Faster Hands & Feet (in 10 days)

“Real pocket determines how they dance, and how they move to it. It’s the movement of the music.”
Taylor Gordon has carved out a niche for herself as ‘The Pocket Queen’, known for her incredible feel and groove. If you’ve ever seen one of her videos on Instagram or KZread, you’ve seen her positivity and passion as well.
In this Drumeo live lesson, Taylor talks about what it means to be ‘in the pocket’. She defines it not as the notes being played, but the spaces between the notes and the feel of those spaces. She also dives into a great point about how the drums - and where the beat lies - can give direction to a song. How do you want the audience to move to the music, and how do you want them to feel?
Taylor views drumming and music in a somewhat unconventional way: she associates grooves with shapes and waveforms. Some are square, others are circular, and others have a jarring up-
down pattern. While she says she doesn’t think she has synesthesia, she describes it in a way that could really benefit drummers who are visual learners.

I used to follow her on Facebook like 10 years ago, I remember she was always working hard on her technique, groove and chops. She was always sharing her knowledge and I just followed her because I used to learn a lot from her videos. Now she is here and I even feel proud of her, her hard work paid off :)
She allows every sound to breathe, resonate, and express itself, and her pauses are so professional, one of the most balanced drummers in the game. cymbals and drums so evenly placed throughout.

I absolutely ❤️ how she doesn’t overplay but still makes it sounds interesting at the same time. Fantastic.
Taylor's groove is deeper than the Marianas Trench. This woman is the real deal.

absolutely 80/20 drummer, and while i’ve got you here, can you please make a video on uptempo jazz fills? I always feel kinda stuck playing fast fills and I feel confined to the few things I have built to memory.
One of the best drummers I know!
I love her playing soooo much! Her pocket is so deep and it seems like she has all the time in the world to do everything, nothing is rushed. also the drum sound is phenomenal! also I see people say similar thing on other videos but seriously, why would people give this a thumb down rating? I just don't understand
That’s one of the best sounding snares I’ve ever heard! Such a snappy, sharp sound.
Taylor, you knocked this session of Drumeo right out of the ball park!!!! Well done Queen 🌹👍😁
Her cymbal work is exquisite, and her overall phraseology is so perfectly balanced.

Finally! I’ve been waiting for this 1.....🔥🔥
Congrats on the Drumeo spot I just love it I've been a fan for a while and as always I just love your playing!!!!!!
Who ever disliked this video I would love to hear your reasons why. This is smooth!!!
Ahhhhhhh this is soooooo goooooooood
Just 6 words Holy Crap! That was good playing!
On the First intro cut played...This is what I'm talking about. Clean, dynamic, colorful, in it, locked without impedance, spaced with the growth factor! Love the syncopation space pocketed with purpose. My goodness, this is so inspiring, this is how I think and arrange...Nikko is beastly with Taylor. Nice Taylor, Nice! Respect. -educapro
As a synesthete, I can really get behind her way of visualizing music and patterns. Creative lesson from a fabulous drummer!

Everything she plays is: "No need to look any further, You got the gig!" Her touch is just incredible.
She plays with such awesome feel man. Each hit of every drum and cymbal means something. I love her grove
The Pocket Queen, you might be the best drummer I have seen - ever. I haven't seen someone approach creative drumming with such grace, comfort, and talent.

I am not impressed by drummers that can play a lot of technical things, drummers that can play with a lot of feel and soul and pocket really get me going. I agree, one of the best drummers I have ever seen personally!
I love when a drummer or any musician for that matter, doesn't need to show off or overplay... but then has their moments where they show the chops are technique/ skills are there when the music calls for it! Awesome groove!
Awesome work around the kit...I've been playing for years and you motivate me to keep practicing and keep working. God Bless You.
Absolutely love this girl she's beyond incredible at our craft!
Awesome playing and the kit sounds amazing !
Hard to fathom the value of all these lessons and videos. So much helpful information and so many inspiring drummers. Drumeo will be plumbed for generations to come. Thank you.
For anyone who has followed Taylor Gordon on her KZread Channel to see the growth of drumming and understanding of her musicianship is truly amazing. She is really coming into her own!
Great understanding of music and amazing skill to reinforce melody´s message thru her rithms and fills. I personally love her use of hi -hats. She´s great
I love her style, flair, vibe so much ❤️ 🥁 🎶 🎵 7:27 her love for her craft is contagious
Phenomenal - First class musicianship right here. From the playing to song selection; from the drum mix to the wisdom laid down - It doesn’t get any better! I absolutely love the way she visualizes grooves as similar shapes and sound waves. Right when she was talking about the sine wave, and played the shuffle, I was like “triangle or saw” and BOOM! Mind expanded.
She steals my heart every single time! So much talent...and Pocket!!!! The people who disliked this video can barely hold a solid rhythm on a tambourine. lol

Her way of connecting grooves and shapes totally makes sense to me!
Goosebumps! Chills! There's something about a drummer that smiles when they're playing... you can't fake that. Papa Joe Jones and Billy Higgins were in that space and so is the Pocket Queen.
Her point about technique is bang on. If you can make a pair of sticks look like noodles when you're moving them then you're all set.

her playing reminds me alot of the late great John Blackwell, who played for years with Prince...amazing
Always a joy to watch the PQ play!!
No usually into this type of music but Taylor's drumming is just so awesome to watch and listen to, I totally jammed out.
Her feel on that second tune is just sick; so patient but yet fully energetic. Great lesson! Thank you!
Like a river flowing through the grand canyon! This is what I live for, to see a show that truly goes there. Just saw Chuck Burgi drumming for Billy Joel in Milwaukee baseball stadium, and it was NUCLEAR! 50,000 people grooving and singing, PURE MAGIC!
a very positive vibe .. thank you for sharing .. really inspired by your style
Thumbs up for "analyzation"!
Great drumming!! I like how you actually use your second snare drum, and how each has a unique sound. Also, that robot dancing was ON POINT!
that song in the beginning is absolute perfection
Love PocketQueen! Glad he brought up synethesia! Immediately picked up on that and wonder how many of us might have variations.
Taylor, you inspire me to practice more!!
Emotions and Audio I TOTALLY get this💯🎯 when I play I just play what I feel
these fills are awesome!
Wow great Taylor!! 👏👏👏❤ Greetings from Italy! 👍👍😃🇮🇹
Brilliant! She actually helped me understand! Being a visual learner this helped greatly 🤙🥁😁
Such a great performance. This was a year ago though wasn't it - just reposted? I watched this a while back anyway, unless I'm imagining it all - inc that broken stick... I was hoping it was a new video! Bring back the Pocket Queen.
That was incredibly cool. Such spontaneity and passion and technical excellence.
Love her set up!
such talent..astonishing...incredible sound
OMG her smile exudes pure joy. Beautiful!

This lady is an outstanding drummer! And a very intelligent (and beautiful) woman too!!! I fell in love with her drumming (and her). Its so satisfying to see this level of drummers on YT. Thanks!
I really liked 'Greyson’s Ladder'. That's where she picked me up. Super nice drumming. Best greetings from Germany.
that hi hat is the cleanest i ever heard the drum kit is awesome and the play is on fit🔥🔥
Was wondering when I would see Taylor on here. Glad to see her on drumeo! ☺👏🏾
Your Explenation of the Muscle Memory to Sound in the Intro is Exactly as I'd (Try &) explain it as well. Also Sick & Tasty Groove + Chops!
So clean and not over done. Nice !
Awesome! Love your confidence :)
Girl you're so good, and you play with a mood. You're very classy on the drums!
"Real pocket determines how they move to it….. (words of wisdom) Brilliant playing Taylor

It's hip to be square! She definitely brings it. Killin'. Thank you!
She's a very good drummer and a good teacher too; she can explain very all what she's doing and what makes her tick. Great staff!!!

very nice and clean play
Wow, that was phenomenal
Very precise and classy. Outstanding
That is some tight playing. I love her technique!
Loving the drum groove!
Though I am only halfway through this EXCELLENT video, Ms. Gordon's description of combining the shapes with movement in her body to demonstrate the groove in a song, it TRULY helped me connect something I've been trying to describe with my own sensations as I write music! EXCELLENT video, Drumeo and Ms. Gordon!

I sometimes wear two (except opposite colors) identical model shoes & I sometimes wear the shirt that has one long one short sleeve. So the color/muscle mem./movement manipulation-reverberations become different colored & (Attitudinal ...?!) personalities and how those individual limb colors & personalities drive a groove, beat, fill, pattern, solos or what have You. I dunno. Just how my mind works I guess. Just a thought. Hava Great One!
yeeeeeeaaaaah! This is what I'm talking about! Her time is amazing!
