    I would MUCH rather they stop wasting time now & just work to release the damn thing! Its been 4 years to make another VR experience that like 99.99% of VR games is NOTHING more than a "Tech Demo"! Seriously, 4 damn years for a demo?? If they made a full game it would no joke take at LEAST 20 years! wow. All they have to do is release early access so they can get funding & staff & it would be 100 times faster & easier, but sadly they dont really care.

  • @aljowen
    @aljowen4 жыл бұрын

    As a solo developer, I can confirm that source control adds huge peace of mind, especially with an off-site repository. It has also saved me on a few occasions too. For example, I found that a bug in my game was actually caused because of memory corruption, but I had no idea what was causing it. Thankfully, my source control software allowed me to go back in time, and try different builds until I found the one where the bug started to occur (it had been undetected for months). Once I found out when the problem was introduced, I could see what code had been added to the game. In this case, source control had changed the surface area of my problem, from the entire solution, down to a few lines of code. Personally I use GitLab + GitKraken. But there are many other completely valid options depending on your own personal preferences.

  • @Niosus

    @Niosus

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@stonium69 Yes, especially if you combine git bisect with automated testing. I work on embedded software, so testing involves a build step, flashing a device, copying testing software to the device and then running tests. I had been chasing this bug that appeared (at least) months ago, but was not able to make any progress. After some time I decided "screw it", and scripted everything. With a simple Python script I could bisect, build, flash the build, copy the test tools, log into the device using "expect", run the tests, get feedback and repeat the process. Since the build took close to an hour to complete, it still took the whole weekend. But on Monday morning I had the exact commit checked out that introduced the issue. Fixing it was another matter, but hey... Can't win em all, right? :)

However, Plastic would have made so many of our development periods phenomenally better. I'm extremely impressed and I'm going to go learn how to learn this right now. fuark these guys remind me of the old days. I remember being a kid and watching the documentary that came with the Halo 2 special edition and realising that Bungie, especially during CE, was just a bunch of nerds doing what they loved. You don't get that vibe seeing footage of modern game studios, but this is it right here. That alone tells me this game will be pretty sick.

    Oh yes. Version control. Something that (as someone who went to college for software development) I've noticed being brought up many times as something you should know how to use (in the case of software, it's mainly Git, Github, or some other similar thing). I remember setting it up (either I did it or a group member did) for group projects in school, and it was very helpful.

    @SharkTank I'm genuinely confused as to why you elected to comment that. I don't think you did it to be an asshole, because it's a pretty shit insult, lacking in any real thought or creativity and you only made a fool out of yourself in the process. It's like you simply lack the cognitive ability to just take an L and communicate normally, so you just blurted that out because you thought it was funny. If you think it's funny then that's alright, good for you. I just kind of hope you eventually grow up a little.

    plasticscm does have a git server. The big difference that plasticscm seems to have : ACL folder/file permissions, avoiding problem merges such as cyclic folder moves, built in support for large files, BYO database backend, and stronger branch control via visualization. Though of course for a smart business the main feature of such a service is always the SUPPORT.

    We use github and source tree for our game. It seems like it is essentially the same thing. We small developers appreciate knowing what others are doing, make sure we arent messing something up hard core haha. Thanks brandon for the video. I'm keeping tabs on boneworks pretty closely and appreciate the updates you guys give out. Best of luck to you and the devs there!

    I learned to use version control at 1st semester at college because of how unbelievably hard it was to collaborate without it. It was a nightmare and now I can't see me not using again even for solo projects. I can't stress this enough: USE VERSION CONTROL, EVEN IF YOU'RE WORKING ON A SOLO PROJECT. It's life changing.
