Brother Kelly - you know that I am a Retired Banker. GP is in our community here too (Muskogee Oklahoma) - a very large employer with excellent Salaries & Benefits. The lay-offs are coming for us too. Look to the current "President", and the Democrats in Congress - for all of this financial pain. They are NOT Business Friendly, nor have they ever been. They have become Socialists. This happens every time they get Policy Control of the Country. And that is the Truth.

Agreed. Based upon what I am seeing on KZread, I am hopeful that a great number of the blacks in America are waking up to this. If this occurs, we have a chance to restore policies that lead to Prosperity and Freedom. Say your prayers Brother - we are on the edge.

I worked for a paper cup company for 17 years. It was bought by Solo Cup and after over 60 years in production, the plant I worked at was shut down. To the people of Perry, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. I came out of that tunnel better off than when I went in. Never quit learning and new opportunities will present themselves to you.

Good evening. Im a truck driver, 8day/ 70 hr logbook. 5 14s equals 70. I haul propane. Corporate sold their Transportation llc. 68 no's. Keep grinding found my new job by chance. If you're looking for a job, it might not be your top 50, but providing for the family out weighs the not liking part. You'll miss out on things but keeping a roof over the heads, food in bellies, clothing yada yada out weighs i don't like, won't do it. Food for thought. Class A with tanker, hazmat and doubles/ triples also a TWIC Card. You'd be amazed how the door shutting gets wedged open because of the endorsements. Good luck everybody. I think the US paper industry has been in turmoil for many years now. The seeds of Globalization that were planted back in the very early 90’s are now maturing and Americans are paying a heavy price for shipping manufacturing and other jobs off shore. I call it the Walmart effect. Prior to 1992 before Sam Walton died, he pushed the Made in American theme in his stores. Not long after his passing, the company began to become a major importer of foreign products. And the tide has never changed from that direction.

I feel for those that are facing the loss of there jobs. Here in South Alabama we have face the same issues. 23 years ago SAPPI Paper company shut down the plant in Mobile that I had been employed with for 26 years. The plant was previously owned by Scott Paper. It was devastating news at the time but God has provided for the community and its people. It was hard to see all your hard work go away in a heart beat but life goes on. Looking back I can honestly say that my life improved after the shut down. The future of these men and women that have lost their livelihood is up to them. My thoughts and prayers go out to them. They can and they will make a better life for themselves and their family’s. It’s hard but with God at your side nothing is impossible.

The situation you refer to here has always been a problem for mid sized towns that rely on one businesses prosperity to keep their towns economy going. It’s a bad thing for rural communities with small towns because larger employers seldom relocate to those areas. Kids leaving school don’t stay where they were raised because of a lack of good jobs. They do tend to return to their roots when they retire because that’s where family is and it’s a more affordable place to retire with lower taxes etc.. I speak from experience. I grew up in small town Kansas, spent time in the military and worked at a good paying job until I retired. Then I came back to the area of my roots. It can be a problem exaggerated by economic issues like inflation but just as often not. Inflation is usually a relatively short term problem unless it’s caused by a long term issue as when our economy ran amok over the entire decade of the roaring 20’s followed by the great depression of the 30’s.

Prayers to the people of Perry. I work for a major telecom corporation that has been cutting jobs for the last 20 years. Having a backup plan has been in my mind at least that long or longer. That stress drove me to finally get debt free about 10 years ago. It was not easy. Working hard and living as simply as possible with no debt has given me piece of mind. My brother works for GA Pacific at a paper mill. He complains that they can’t get young people to work anymore. They keep quitting, forcing him to work more hours.

I am up in Maine. The biggest private employer are paper mills. 50% of the mills have closed in the last 8 years. I know many people that used to drive 5 miles to their mill but now are driving over 50 miles [some are driving over 65 miles] to work at the next open mill.

  • @DennisFahlstrom

Chances are good that the larger mill bought out the smaller one or merged with them in order to raid a healthy pension fund. That problem created a closet industry like Bain Capital and the resulting crash in middle sized towns caused real misery to thousands of families while making a few folks multimillionaires. No well run government should tolerate merging that wrecks local economies. It’s the same thing with outsourcing jobs overseas to maximize profits.

Happened to an airline contract company I was working for. I was there for 3 years making good money. An opportunity came where I got on with a major airline and tried getting some of my coworkers to come with me. A paycut was required but only for a few years than the raises were worth it in the long run. That company ended up folding due to poor management leading to unhappy airlines not renewing the contracts. Best decision I ever made

Georgia-Pacific closed the lumber mill in my home town of Fort Bragg, CA in 2002. GP was bought out by Koch Industries in 2005. Koch's business model is to squeeze the last dime they can from operations and then sell off the remaining assets. The fishing industry here is barely surviving due to declining fish populations. The main things that still bring money in to town are tourism, retired folks, tele-commuters and the local craft brewery. (Pot growing is probably just a tiny fraction of what it was 20 years ago.) Good luck and thanks for the video Andrew!

Hello Andrew. Thanks for sharing your video. I'm terribly sorry for the loss your community has gone through. Our economy here has suffered as well. I see all this as a sign of the end times. I have been a Christian for many years and read my Bible every day. As Jesus once said "In this World you will have trouble. But be of good cheer because I have overcome the World." I hope you are a Christian brother as well, but I really don't know. If not, I pray that you receive Jesus as your Lord and Savior soon, because my friend our days are numbered. Take care and God Bless.

I agree with you Andrew. We are retired and on a "fixed" income, one of my prescriptions I got in June was $17.00, three months later it is now $75.00. I am thankful that we can still afford it for now, but if it keeps going up, well it will be one I will have to do without. Praying for your community.

Keep the hard work/resilient attitude and faith that the good Lord knows what he is doing and everything happens for a reason. Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% what you choose to do about those situations. Keep the faith. God Bless!

That's really rough for your community, hate to hear it. My uncle had the same thing happen to him at a GP paper mill in WA a decade or so ago. There it was the government regulations that chased them out of town, would be interesting to know if that played a factor here.

Yup, a community in our area had their pulp mill bought out, and it was closed and all the machinery was stripped out and shipped to China. The town is now half the size and is a dead end retiresment community on the skids.

I have a cousin and an uncle (two different sides of my family, they haven't ever met) who both lost their livelihoods in the printing industry because of the internet and loss of revenue in the newspaper industry. Prayers for you and all the people who have been blindsided with the changes.

It’s sad to hear of yet another company closing. My very first job was working in retail, I put in 9 1/2 years when suddenly they went out of business. I had no idea what I was going to do next! Now I am drawing a very small pension from that company. This economy has to straighten out before there is nothing left. Prices keep going higher and higher yet wages are not keeping up with them and being on a limited income due to retirement and it’s a struggle at times to have money to pay bills and buy groceries. Sending prayers to the employees of that company that things will work out for them🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Small towns are really gonna be hit hard, without that money buying goods in the community. Our 4 big dairies closed down in our rural area and many people had to move to other countys , because their residences were tied to their jobs.

Sad story. Practically identical story of a town near me, Espanola, Ontario, Canada. Pulp mill closing (temporary, for a year), and about 500 jobs lost. It's been there "forever" and is the towns, paper town, major employer. The town may survive but many people will have to pack up and leave since like you said, there just are not other jobs there. Hope it's true that it's only for a year!!

Dear friends - my heart goes out to your community - hope you all can stay strong! My family actually owns a paper mill down here and it too is one of the backbones of the community. We are holding in there against larger mills and greater competition so I can’t imagine the pain of having to close such a lifeline! Very poignant to hear the effect of such a closure from your point of view and my prayers the new lifeline will soon come to give a boost to your community! Abraços

Sorry to hear about your local GP mill closing. BUT this has happened not only in your area but across the country, for decades. Consolidation/ buyouts of companies, because of the goal to make more money vs loss of money through poor management possibly. Prayers to those people who is directly affected. God will hopefully provide new opportunities. 2008 was my experience in losing the major portion of my personal finances. Lost about 3/4 of our nest egg. Then health issues have compounded the recovery ever since then. Everyone has their story to tell but bottom line is that we just celebrated our 47 th anniversary. God has blessed me with a wonderful soulmate. Be Safe and God Bless you guys.
