This is already happening, whenever ads play, it sometimes is about we had just recently talked about, the phone itself even with it's separate apps, is a microphone, listening to everything we say. Ever see an ad and say to yourself, "weird I had just talked about this some time ago," that's because ads are trying to get you to consume unnecessarily trying to remind you to pick up the item before store closes and such

I more so thought about facebook and social media rather than advertising, but I think Morpheus represented the tool that corporations use AI to create a social identity, and use that data to appeal to our interests. But also how social media is used to create a sense of understanding through exposing people through recommended posts on their personal information. Essentially, Morpheus realizes that he himself, by accomplishing exactly what his creators intended for him to do. It's really, really weird, considering this came out in 2000. I know Warren Spector said he just got lucky, but maybe, in the aftermath of Y2K, people thought about the worst scenarios of computers and AI, and it ended up being true by chance, tragically. I don't think for example, while Morpheus says the need to be understood can be satisfied by god, that he and by extension, Helios are god. As the story is symbolic of humans uniting with their creations, rather than being controlled by it, that they become the masters of their own fate. (JC merging with Helios, both being tools of the government that sought their own freedom.) But that's why I love this game really. It's insightful, artistic, it knew exactly what it wanted to be philosophically and aesthetically
