What has Dan Campbell been doing all along? Getting good players and making each position room competitive. Of course we're not going to keep 3 of these kickers, we probably won't even keep 2. He's just creating competition in the room, which I really like.

Dan Campbell is not the guy pulling the strings. Brad Holmes is. Campbell isn’t a talent evaluator, he’s a motivator:

We have three kickers in training camp every year. We will keep two going into the regular season. One on practice squad, one on roster. Also those 5 misses, in his last game he had a kick blocked as he slipped and twisted his ankle. Later he missed two more, so 3 of his five misses came on a block and after when he twisted his ankle.

I like how Bates can kick long field goals. I like that the Lions grabbed him instead of Green Bay or Washington, but here is my thoughts on why Detroit wants him. He is an indoor kicking god, does way better in a dome than outside! Detroit has 3 games outside this year; Green Bay, San Francisco, and Chicago. Every other game is in a dome. The fact that he can kick 64 yard FGs plays into Dan Campbell’s coaching style. Detroit has become the team that will go for it on 4th down more than anyone else. Now you have a long distance kicker which plays into that coach’s methodology. 4th and 4yds on the opponent’s 45yd line send Bates out to kick a 75yd Field Goal then fake it and get the 4yds!! I can literally see this happening time and again. I feel like Bates is going to be a huge asset to the team in more ways than anyone is giving him credit for.

My thoughts: culture, culture, culture. There is one thing true to every roster decision made the last few years is that they want to keep an ecosystem of grit and teamwork. As long as Bates fits that mold, he has the talent and can lean in to be the guy.

One of my concerns with Jake is that he’s already gone through a season with the UFL. How is he going to hold up strength and accuracy wise at the end of the Lions season and into the playoffs? I know kickers aren’t full time or anything but it makes me wonder if he might “hit a wall” so to speak right when we need him the most.

Well, Jake wasn’t a full time kicker EVER B4 now so we can’t check his history bcZ he has none and his accuracy faded toward the END of the Panthers season. He missed several, ending the season with an accuracy percentage that would have ranked him as the 32nd kicker in the NFL. So MORE kicking didn’t make him MORE accurate did it? Weather? Nope. I’d love to hear thoughts about WHY he fell off late in the season - even missed a game winner 🤷‍♂️. Convince me Jake isn’t destined to be the guy you go to when you’re in need of kitchen cabinets.

No they're not going to keep 3 kickers on their roster. No team in their right mind would. Badgley is the first one out if he's the same through TC. Also, the Lions calling card hasn't been kickers, it's been losing games and being a bad franchise. Now we habe a good franchise, and we should trust the staff about which kicker will start game 1. They've done nothing to show us we shouldn't trust them.

@@thomaswatkins3686 I get that but you have to be more confident in your team.. it's no reason not to with the offseason the Lions have had.. they eliminated all their weaknesses and going in the upcoming season with their best most balanced roster ever!.. they got to the NFC Championship game and was a quarter away the Superbowl vs a 49ers team most didn't give them a chance at beating.. some thought it would even be a blowout.. and that was with a Swiss cheese atrocious secondary and a thin On-line despite them being a top-3 On-line.. ALL 6 losses were a result of that and now you tell me you eliminate the achilles-hill of weaknesses you had as a team and added an elite kicker which is ANOTHER weapon you didn't have last season??.. i mean c'mon tell me the upcoming season won't be even more special.. it's logical thinking.. if you don't complicated with negative thoughts then it's not difficult to figure out the next step that the Lions will eventually get to...
