The Lions just clinched the division, and I’m reviewing the draft analysis from several channels. This has to be one of the most immediately impactful rookie classes in the history of the NFL. Gibbs, Laporta, Campbell and Branch have not only been contributing, but have been factors. I’ve been a Lions fan since being a kid in the 80s and watched Barry’s entire career. There will never be another Barry, who was great consistently for 10 years - but for the first time since Barry, Gibbs gives me Barry vibes. There is just something special about the kid. I also love how humble Gibbs is, like Barry. I’m not comparing Gibbs and Barry - just using them in the same sentence because I think Gibbs can not only be a great running back.. but he can be something special, like Barry was, to the history of the Lions organization. Plus, if you watch the story of Gibbs’s life - you gotta love the kid. He deserves this. Let’s hope he stays relatively injury free and can play 10 seasons like Barry did. I think the fact that we have the duo rotation with Monty (who is also a high character, stud RB), helps make that a possibility. Cheers to the 2023 NFC North Division Champs! 🍻

Yeah, adding the bump to this. Kuddos to seeing the potential of the later picks, end yes, short sighted that they didn't see the existing O-Line as a reason to "reach" for an RB. Didn't come up once. They mocked BH for reaching, but they had the O-Line, QB, and the Thunder in place.
Gibbs was Alabama's #1 receiver AND #1 Back!
Ben Johnson schemed a lineman for a first down catch. I think he'll be able to figure out ways to use Gibbs
Of all the takes I've heard on this draft, not one person has mentioned that the Lions lead the league in rb usage last year with a top 5 offense.

It's even funnier when you analyze Goff as a player. When was Goff at his most successful? With Gurley, a stud running back, and a strong offensive line. Giving Goff a three down back in Montgomery and pairing him with a versatile back like Gibbs is so good for Goff, and barely any of these analysts mention that. The Lions are literally building around their QB's strengths while acquiring blue-chip players. That's how YOU SHOULD DRAFT. Draft players that fit your team and culture, who have enough talent that they can succeed in other systems in the future if the current plan fails.

@@riventriss3960 I've also been seeing a lot of talk along the lines of, Jahmyr Gibbs is basically going to be the Lions' Deebo Samuel. And looking at the last couple seasons the way they've used Amon-Ra St Brown, it makes a lot of sense why they would draft a player who is more electric doing a lot more of that gadget stuff and letting St Brown just be a more traditional WR where he can just show off how clean his route running ability is. Ultimately i just look at it as if they drafted Jahmyr Gibbs the WR who can also run the ball out of the backfield when asked to, and the positional value concern really goes away.

That's because they are clueless, most of these analysis don't know what they be talking about. Like you said we used are rb heavy in are offense. With that being said Gibbs will be a great fit in a explosive offense. Very well spoken happy to see that somebody besides me understand the football.
I'm glad none of guys are the General Manager.
The Lions traded the sixth pick and selected Gibbs at twelve. They also moved from pick 81 to pick 34 as part of the same trade and selected LaPorta. Detroit also had players on defensive line coming back from injuries. Detroit has players coming back from on Oline from injury. They will have one of their deepest most talented rosters ever. Exactly. They’re not going to hand Gibbs the ball and smash him up the middle every play. That’s what they signed Mo Ibrahim for. Gibbs is far more than just a RB.
Brad Holmes is a mid rounds draft genius. He finds diamonds that shouldn't be there. In the top rounds, he takes a sure thing. It might be a reach, but the floor is so high on both of those picks, he doesn't have to worry about a 1st or second round bust (which becomes a waste of capital).
Sam is blinded by position value rather than looking at the actual football players. He also did not account that they got pick 12 and 32 by moving back which is probably better than only choosing the 1 high value position at 6.
@kenbutton6706

Not just that but Sam wants players drafted that will either sit (not start) OR he wants a drafted player to mean a current player is cut. This is his philosophy... Let's take one look at Sam and guess he's never played a down of football and the team aspect and culture stuff - he doesn't get that... He sees stats and chirps obvious from those stats. Don't blame a duck 🦆 for being a duck - Sam is a Sam - never a football player or coach so how could he be any different than a modern day Mel Kiper - just significantly less known. I don’t get why the thought that they were going to force feed Gibbs was even brought up. The Lions offense is balanced and they spread the ball around, that’s why they were pretty damn good last year. Imo Gibbs will have a similar workload as what Swift was suppose to have.

What running back has led his SEC powerhouse team in receiving and rushing?? Lol he's unique my guy. Had the 8th fastest combine speed of an RB EVER.
Gibbs is not just a running back, he is a offensive weopon- Jack Campbell is not just an inside libnebacker, he will be used as an Edge Rusher and in pass coverage and clog the middle- both versatile guys on each side of the ball.
Hmmm...it's funny to look back at this, isn't it? Three out of the first four Lions' picks were on the PFF All-Rookie Team (Campbell, Branch and LaPorta). Two out of the four were Pro Bowlers (Gibbs and LaPorta). In Rookie of the Year voting, LaPorta, Gibbs and Branch finished 3rd, 4th and 5th. Like I said, too funny.
This aged very poorly. Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell are in synchronicity when it comes to the draft board and this was third great draft class in row, and this was the best ever. Brad Holmes cooking up some villain stew and nobody likes the ingredients lol, Campbell is a stud run stopping machine not a reach at all.
there is a reason these guys host a show and Brad Holmes drafts.
I understand the concern generally about when teams describe a player as just a "weapon" but in the case of the Lions, Brad Holmes, Ben Johnson, and even Jahmyr Gibbs himself have all articulated a really specific idea of how they view him being used. Gibbs said when he spoke to them, they told him exactly what they want to do with him. I don't think the idea that they're just drafting a guy and then are going to try to shoehorn him into a role really fits in this case.
8:59 I realize there's a point being made, but comparing Jahmyr Gibbs, a RB that can legit run pass routes from the slot to Denard Robinson, essentially a scrambling QB, is comparing apples to oranges. Robinson could not catch passes and be nifty compared to what Gibbs can provide. He'll probably end up being a better version of Percy Harvin.
@riventriss3960
Жыл бұрын
As a Michigan fan I was cackling when they brought up Denard. Denard was a running QB with bad throwing skills and who couldn't really catch well, which is why he didn't succeed in the NFL (comparable to Tim Tebow's career, though Tim was a lot bigger and a bruiser rather than a cruiser). Just completely different players. Gibbs was the feature back in one of the best offensives in the country, on a team known for producing the most high quality players in recent years. Just completely different scenarios.

If Gibbs ends being as good as Deebo Samuel then is 12 still to high? He will be running routes, just as much as he will be running the ball. Pff did a redraft and had Deebo going 7th overall. Dose being a WR/RB make that much of a difference to a RB/WR?
Are you kidding me .. Gibbs is right up there with Bijan all day long .. both tier 1 guys! Yes .. Bijan is the classic bell cow RB BUT broooo Gibbs’s skill set .. quickness .. speed .. pass catching .. route running .. vision .. feet .. anticipation,etc.. etc.. is all so unbelievably RARE .. he can literally do it all and just the ultimate weapon especially in todays NFL .. I mean WOW .. the kid is so special man! So you’re telling me you’d rather have a C. Gonzalez .. who I do like .. over a talent such as J Gibbs especially on this Lions roster .. especially in an offensive league where you have to put up hella points. no fkng way .. not even close .. I never watched these guys before. I’m impressed with your analysis and your back n forth working with each other. I enjoyed this vid I’m joining your page
"value" is a perception. Production is real. I will take production EVERY time over perception of value and the chance of losing the guy that I want trying to find value. I wonder what you guys would have said in '92 when Jason Hanson was drafted at the end of the 2d round.
Saying CMAC hasn't been used well when he got 1000 yards on the ground and through the air is wild to me.
There were at least three teams trying to trade up into the middle of round 1 to get Gibbs - lots of buzz after his pro day. Why take a chance on losing out on a player you want? Anyone who watched the Lions saw their two biggest needs after free agency were an explosive back who can stay on the field and improved tackling. Gibbs, Campbell, and Branch were drafted to fill specific team needs, not to fit in with somebody’s imaginary draft board.
At the very beginning of Detroit Lions Inside the Den they pulled a sound bite of Sam's analysis here and it's absolutely hilarious

Sam is a nerd but he's STILL dumb and making PFF a laughing stock to real NFL credentialed teams 😂
If the Lions take Bijon at 6 they're paying him $28M. Instead they moved back to 12, got compensated with a second round pick to do so, and took Gibbs who's now getting paid $18M. That 35% less salary on the books for Gibbs at 12 over Bijon at 6. Is Gibbs 65% as talented as Bijon? I think that's a safe bet. I believe in Holmes and I think he's a top 10 GM (maybe top 5) in the league especially in the draft.
Antoine Green is a super sleeper.
So you think the Lions thought…”we don’t know how to use Gibbs so…let’s draft him 12th overall”? 😂😂 of course they know how they’re going to use him.
Its a great thing you guys aren't the talent scouts for an NFL team
The Lions had the best draft of all 32 teams in 2023! four starters, and their future quarterback. Mic drop!
Thank God we have Brad and Dan.
A+++ Love Brad Holmes Holmes & MCDC & Ben Johnson My Dudes We’re Blessed to have them from The Football GODS Thank You
This sure did age well 😂
There is something to be said for positional value, but when the best players don't fit positional value rankings, you toss positional value considerations out the window. You want to draft the best guys, not just the best you can get because you're forcing yourself to ignore the best guys.
Did this guy just say bijan Robinson is the best rb prospect in the last 10-15 years 😂
the LIONS got Ben Johnson 2 early draft TOYS. Fast Toys Too!!!
These dudes just need to justify why their draft rankings are always so damn wrong. Lions got 4 day one starters in the first 48 picks. Brad Holmes is cooking and you’re clueless to it
gibbs could be the next marshall faulk and if u dont know now u know
Bijan is saquan lite - you have to get him 25 attempts and grind it out and he rarely takes one to the house. Gibbs is a home run every time he touches the ball
Something I think is being overlooked or maybe I’m overvaluing is that we have spent of a lot money on free agents. Holmes consistently gets bargains on 1 year deals so he always has financial flexibility. So the positional value argument is valid but somewhat countered by signing mostly 1 year prove it deals.
Denard Robinson was mostly a Quarterback at Michigan. When he was used as something else at Michigan he wasn't as effective. Jahmyr is a proven commodity as a weapon; what he's going to do in Detroit is what he did successfully at Georgia Tech and Alabama.
Disagree that the Lions are saying Gibbs is a “weapon, not a RB” because they only have a vague idea how they want to use him. I think they know exactly how they want to use him, and it’s not going to be as a between the tackles rusher.
@StarfishHero

Gibbs will be closer to Deebo in this offense than McCaffery. Lions have Montgomery to be “the” running back.
It’s been almost a year and I don’t hate this take. It’s easy to stand on this side and say “nope, you’re wrong.” But in reality the Gibbs pick was a question mark, we knew he was fast but I was worried. Great foresight on the futures from the GM and front office.
Positional value is interpreted wrong. They are assuming you have no returning players. The Lions went heavy on Dline and Oline the last 2 drafts, they brought in a whole new Dbackfield through free agency, the only 1st round wide receiver in the draft plays the slot where you already have St.Brown. Their weaknesses were linebacker, running back, backup qb, safety depth and outside receiver depth. They addressed all of their weaknesses instead on overstocking on hi cost positions they already have good players at. You can't have a team full of just ends, tackles, Qbs and recievers and hope to be successful.
The Lions took the players they liked and I appreciate that because they didn't have a whole lot of needs that wasn't covered in FA which gave allowance to treat themselves in the 1st round with whomever they wanted and after Bijan the next back to go was Gibbs...
I think what Brad Holmes os saying jes a weapon, he means you van do a lot of different things with him, he's dynamic. Trust me, they will spread put the ball but there's so many things they can do with Gibbs and mixing in the other players its really going to keep defences guessing. When it comes down to it, you want to pick the best player available thats going to make your team better at that pick and in this case it was Gibbs. We will see how it goes wont it.
I think what weighs against positional value is confidence they'll be good. Jahmyr Gibbs and Jack Campbell are probably in the top 10 among players in this draft when it comes to how sure you are they're going to be above average starters. And so when you ding them for positional value thereafter, #12 and #18 in a draft devoid of studs outside of a few guys does make some level of sense.

I definitely agree that this seemed to be their process, but I don’t like it. I get moving out of 6 after Witherspoon is taken, and you don’t want to take a chance on Carter. I don’t get them passing on Gonzalez at 12 considering their lack of high end cb talent. I can’t believe they didn’t take a cb at all with how deep the class is. As soon as they sniff success they think that they can start drafting like this. Why not continue to build how they have up to this point?
@jvandyck87

@@patrickmoney1894 Christian Gonzalez is very boom or bust though. So he's the opposite of drafting Jahmyr Gibbs. If you hit, it's a slam dunk based on how good he can be and the positional value. But if they're just trying to use the draft to get safe-floor plus-starters, he's not the guy for that. That said, Christian Gonzalez going to the Patriots and getting coached by Belichick makes him much more likely to hit than if he'd gone to a lot of other places. So Gonzalez may hit big in New England when he would have busted in Detroit.
Does PFF do reviews after the season? To see how not only the teams did, but also how right or wrong they were?
Man Denard Robinson being put in end same ballpark as Gibbs is criminal. I’m a big ten fan through and through and loved DRob at Michigan, and I actually think Jacksonville had some good things going on with him early but he just couldn’t stay healthy, but he’s nothing like Gibbs. Jahmyr has a far stronger base and is also a far better receiver and route runner. Plus Detroit is far better at using the tools of the guys they have to maximize there potential. I think y’all get too hung up on big boards and a guy going ten spots earlier or later than you project. Dan Campbell and the boys just wants coachable dawgs with traits that fit what they are looking for and they got those in spades
I really like the B Martin pick up as well! RAS score be damned…you know who else came from a small school and had a very low RAS score….Damon “Snacks” Harrison….heard of him?! Lol Let’s see how everything turns out by start of the season!
Fun to revisit this after the season. I watched their Falcons grade to compare their Bijan analysis. To summarize, Bijan is a unicorn... and he was baaarely worth taking at 8. Gibbs, is a loooong shot to be a unicorn and isn't worth it at #12. Looks a bit different after the season. I think the Lions hit that long shot. My only issue about their after-season analysis, is that instead of admitting that Gibbs is probably a unicorn.. they talk about positional value to defend their initial assessment. We understand positional value. But can you just admit Gibbs is better than you thought and if Bijan is worth it at #8 then Gibbs is worth it at #12?
jahmyr will be just fine, ben johnson will find plays for him

Teams have to draft based on their own style and their competition. When was Goff at his absolute best and in the super bowl? When he had an elite RB with him. With Campbell, the NFC is built to run. 9 of the top 12 rushing offenses in the league including the Lions, Bears, Eagles, Cowboys & Niners are in the NFC. We’re being built for the environment we’re currently in. We’re better than the Cowboys and we’re built to handle the Eagles & Niners. This draft makes total sense.
Positional value is mock draft talk. We'll see you in the Superbowl!!!
Also, the reach and positional value points are the same point. Not two separate things, in this case.
The Lions got the players they needed, Gibbs is a better runningback tha Robinson, Robinson is limited in his abilities. Bijan Robinson does not have open field speed like Gibbs. Detroit got great players through free agency before the draft. All they needed was solid players not high paid divas. Jalen Carter has a tendancy to quit on plays, so he is not a Lions type player. Every player has interviews with the perspective team The Divas did not pass Holmes interviews. Quit looking at the surface and dig deeper. How come there hasn't been a player used like Marshall Faulk? Marshall would catch passes 30 plus yards down the field, there is no other running back that has been used that way. Jerrick McKinnon or Dalvin Cook aren't capable of catching those passes? I would think that would create match-up problems for a safety or a linebacker.
It obvious Detroit didn’t want Jalen Carter or Bijan. They went after JGIBBS by trading back and received Another great value pik. Gibbs was reported to be going to the Jet’s @15. They got their guy’s plus great value further down the line. Apparently it doesn’t matter what some say players should go.

Yes. 4.3 speed. You want to give him the ballin open spaces. Gibbs will only get the ball about 15 to 20 Xs. No need to worry. They have it all figured out.

You’re stat’s didn’t show the YAC Laporta has. He’s 1st.
The conversation about value, touches and system are antiquated terms that no longer work in today's game to a team's benefit. Once upon a time it made sense because some positions were undervalued, but today the pendulum has swung and they have become way overvalued. To live by today's tenant that you might lose a spec of value by not following some template that says this position is higher than one is like throwing out the baby for the bathwater. As long as you are getting the players you need and improving your team in a meaningful fashion, who cares. Take any of these draft picks and exchange the order and you can feel good about it still even to those that are still dying on that sword. Brad Holmes is using the league and this mentality as his playground. He is using it to get a jump on everyone. As a Lions fan, I'm happy if you all keep doing it for a few more years until you figure it out, but I think everyone is starting to catch on. I hope not though, and this conversation means we may still have a few years left before it really catches fire.
Most of the NFC North are run first offenses. It makes sense to draft the best Lb in the draft.
“You’re not going to like this if you hate nuance” *literally the guy beside him hating nuance*
This was the most balanced critique of the Lions’ draft that I’ve seen thus far. Clearly, Gibbs is a polarizing choice at #12. To hear you guys, he basically has to cure cancer to justify that selection. That said, other than Van Ness, I don’t see another fit that they missed on at #12. And, if they were doubling down on a more explosive offense, then Gibbs was the pick…not a TE or a WR.

Yeah the take home point was "what did you leave on the table to draft Jahmyr Gibbs" but also didn't name a player available they would rather have had the Lions take. Sure, in a vacuum, WR or TE can be a higher value pick there but I think if the Lions pick Quentin Johnston at 12 we circle back to the same argument that the Lions reached for a player. I think JSN is the only WR that realistically had a chance to go there but with the questions about his ability to play on the outside, I don't really want the chance that he would be competing with ARSB for playing time. I also think that the TE argument is a moot point because I don't view the difference between Kincaid, Mayer, La Porta, or Washington to be that big which was evidenced by the Lions still taking TE2 at pick 34 with La Porta and Mayer still being on the board

Love how well these Lions draft grades from all these armchair GMs have aged. Kind of hard to grade a draft class before they've even taken an NFL snap!
I’m sorry, but I just can’t see how Bijan is THAT much better than Gibbs. I disagree with Sam, it’s not often you see a running back with the skill set of Gibbs while also having legit 4.3 speed. He has Jamaal Charles type skill set. Guys with the skill set of Gibbs usually are not as explosive or fast as Gibbs.

Running back is a lower value position? Bro! It’s the most important position on the offense. It’s blocking, running and receiving. It’s the X factor for game clock management.
They should draft a certain position because of value, but it's a weak draft. They got good players in a weak draft. It's a win
i also think detroit is drafting for depth, they are getting to the point that by the time the season starts the back ups will be just as good as the starters at many positions
It's a good thing you guys are not picking in the draft, Holmes and Campbell know what's best for this team
Both these 2 guys..watched the video and saved it to a Playlist. Why? Later on with the Slappy Reviews both these gentlemen will take some heat. Gibbs, Campbell...we went after what we NEEDED not a sexy overrated overweight Delinquent Driving maniac..also remember we went and improved our secondary through FA while still drafting youth! Bad overall review which hell in Detroit we are used to the HATE!
What’s wrong with taking a WR/RB at 12? Holmes straight up said that Gibbs is going to help fill the void that was created by Jameson Williams’ suspension. He isn’t gonna do that by running. You have to think outside of the compartments that you’re putting these player into.
For a team that didn't make the playoffs you'd think there would be need at high value positions but they really don't. Detroit is in a fine tuning the roster phase. They're ready to compete. Now so draft for long term success.
Giving Detroit and A especially after practices....!
I would love to hear Sam have to put numbers to what would make Gibbs worth the #12 pick? Or is he just claiming even Barry Sanders isnt worth a top ten pick?
Gibbs will be more of a WR than a RB in Ben Johnson offense. Get ya popcorn ready 🍿
If you reorganize the Lions picks, they get the same exact people, in the "typical" draft order, according to the prediction by The Athletic. And very close in other mock drafts.
It all comes down to opportunity cost... They could have had "great", instead they just got "good"... Would you rather have Jalen Carter and D. Swift, or J Gibbs, Laporta and a '25 4th round pick?
Sam I need to know this from you. You are a GM. This is your Board. Will Anderson, CJ Stroud, Devon Witherspoon, Do you trade back and then decide the next players will be there because they are RBs? Your next group of players in order are Bijan, Gibbs, Darnell Wright, Jack Campbell, Sam LaPorta, etc. WHO are your picks at 12, 18, and 34, which you got by trading back to 12? By the way, you gave the draft a B+.
Bijan Robinson is probably the 2nd or 3rd RB in the draft. I had Gibbs #1 and Israel Abanikanda ranked #2 with Bijan coming in at #3. Why? His long speed is not elite when compared to Gibbs or Abankanda both of whom are a homerun threat every time they touch it.
