Bought a 2014 Haro 350.1 for 100.00. Mainly because it has a 21” top tube. Being 6’1” it felt more comfortable. Some parts could use an upgrade. But overall would consider it a good buy.

Just remember, all this advice goes out the door if the bike is old school. An old school BMX bike can be worth $100's if not over $1000. A young kid might not want it to ride, but you could definitely flip it. People throw out rare bikes that are collected now like old cars.

Just picked up an almost imaculate 20.5" 2012 haro 200.3 for £60... it has every single low end component you just mentioned, unsealed us bb is shot to pieces but everything else is factory fresh. Restored the bb cups and cones with emery cloth and made it usable but will be upgrading to a sealed 19mm bb on pay day. Already upgraded the seat and as parts wear out ill upgrade them one by one. Not a bad deal for the price really.

He might have been a little more convinced to not buy it if he seen someone like you talking about it and explaining it. You couldn’t of done a better job explaining it and I’m still gonna show him this video so he can still understand what I’m talking about! Back in the days of BMX Board I bought a used complete from a guy for $350. It was a Felt Sheriff (which I was not interested in) but all of the parts were aftermarket. Mostly Odyssey stuff: freestyle forks, Elementary stem, Wombolt cranks, sealed gyro, levers. It had a Thompson Elite seatpost, and Ti-spokes in the front wheel. All together I think it would have been around $1100 new. I sold the frame and bars (also Felt) and bought a Fly 3 Amigos frame, slapped on my Primo bars and pedals, my Macneil guard sprocket and I was all set. I've replace most of the parts since them but I'm still riding a few parts from that bike today.

Just bought my first racing bike at 43yo! paid 180 for a DK Sentry and thought it could have been a little cheaper. Said he had 2 other guys coming to look at it. The three parts you touched on were all on the lower end for quality according to you. Im going to learn on it, may upgrade a few things but that's once I get better. Wish I would have seen this yesterday. Oh well. Now I will know where to start next time. Thanks!

Racing you want to look for sealed 2-3 piece cranks and usually euro bb. There’s a lot more cross over between MTB (specifically downhill) and BMX race bikes than between MTB and Freestyle.

Hi. Thanks for the video. I am getting back to biking and have a mountain bike I enjoy riding when I get the time. I recently saw a late 80's restored GT and fell back in love with bmx and brought back many memories. I want to get one just to commute through campus and I was wondering what your opinion is on trek bikes? Got one for free and looks like the seat, handlebars and pedals have been changed. Can I put better parts on the trek ? Is it even worh it? Are fit bikes good for beginners? Are Elite bikes from amazon good for beginners? Thanks in advance.

Your explanations were awesome! Thanks for this video. I am researching to buy my son his first normal size, bmx style bike. I want to get him something better tham a Walmart Mongoose, but also cheaper than legit bikes...like $300 tops. I have found a Ruption Hacker for fairly low price, it has the standard external headset style, it does have a sealed mid style bottom bracket, 3 pc crank , and sealed hubs with the bigger 14mm rear axle. Would this be a decent starter for a 5'2" ish 13yr old? Also looked at a GT Air 2020, amd a couple im the $275-300 ramge, but it seems like getting a really good one I would have to step up to $400+...I figure if he gets really into riding, I can someday help him get a better GT/Kink/Stolen/Fit/Sunday/Haro/etc... Please let me know if the Ruption Hacker 2020(silver/chrome) , would be decent, or if you have a few other suggestions in the sub $300 range. Single dad raising 3 kids, so have to be somewhat budget conscious. Thanks again for the video.

  • @Brant_Moore

So here’s the way I look at it..If you buy a bike now and end up needing an upgrade, you’ll have the first bike for another kid. If they’re all older and you don’t see yourself needing to ever buy another bike unless it’s an upgrade, you may want to spend the extra 100-150$ now instead of spending $300 now and then $400-$450 later. Most bikes at that $300 price range are the about the same bike, but sometimes you can find deals on previous years model and get something better for the same price.

I bought a sub-$100 and rode tf out of it for a lil more than a year, it got me thru the worst of the learning curve of spins with several amateur wheel truings, one professional truing, and a donor set of wheels off a bike my buddy hadn't touched in a decade. It was a $98 Walmart Mongoose. Every single bad part mentioned was on it as well as very low rise handlebars, a 20" top tube which doesn't work well with my 6'1 frame, and tires made of nylon I believe?? Absolutely no grip to be had, but it served it's purpose to let me see if it was going to be a phase, or something I'd stick with before dropping serious cash on a new bike. There isn't really a BMX scene in my town, you're more likely to see a drunk guy pedaling past with a 12 pack on his shoulder.

Should I do any upgrade to it to improve it? Cause ik it can always be better what would you suggest to make it the best it can be? An also can the devotion be taken off not sure if it’s a sticker or actually painted to the bike. N thanks for quick response

Wow that’s pretty cool I hadn’t heard of that before. As far as the bike and upgrading it goes, there’s really only a couple things that I’d suggest. Everything on it is good enough to last for quite a while. The cranks and stem are the only two parts that are low end when compared to high end aftermarket parts. Always happy to try to help! Hope it’s enough to earn or keep your subscription!
