Details on the American missionaries killed in Haiti

Two American missionaries were among three people killed in Haiti in an apparent gang attack. Two of the victims were the daughter and son-in-law of Missouri state Rep. Ben Baker. Jacqueline Charles, Haiti and Caribbean correspondent for the Miami Herald, joins CBS News with more.

This beautiful young couple were the best of us. They aware of the danger, they were dedicated and committed. The husband, Davey Grew Up in Haiti, his parents started the orphanage mission in 2000. Our prayers are for the innocent children, and the parents of thees two wonderful souls that literally gave their lives for the love and care of others that were less fortunate. People do dangerous things that other would not, like first responders going into dangerous situation to save others, or some do extreem sports for $$. This couple knew the risk, yet loved to the very end. May God welcome such commited people.

It is incredibly sad that the majority of the people commenting on this truly have no idea what selfless love really is. You can love this life, but you will still one day lose it. These two young people and their friend, lived selflessly for OTHERS. And they died doing that. There was a day that very few, if anyone would dare speak against such a noble life lived. Shame one you all for speaking this way. To know Christ is to know love. Know Him, and you'll know this kind of selfless LOVE. GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS, THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS.

God also said to follow the laws of the land and people were told not to go to haiti. So if people want to sacrifice their lives it makes no difference. I'm sorry to say but I don't see where it made any difference. And how can these people expect since they are successful with the bakery in a school that these gangsters weren't going to eventually get to them? This man should have had his wife at home during this horrible time. These people need to fix their own damn problems.

  • @waitaminute2015

There comes a point where staying is actually putting more people at risk. That is not selfless, that's selfish. Exploiting vulnerable people trying to survive, while you are drawing more attention to them is selfish. A similar thing happened in Jamaica. A married couple that were missionaries, helped a community building homes. Eventually jealousy of others began and quarreling and stealing went on . The husband and his partner were found chopped up after years of supposedly getting along with everyone. Not everyone agrees with your missionary work and you must have discernment to know when your good deeds become just a selfish way to fulfill yourself ignoring danger.

I personally knew this mission family and they grew up in Haiti and ran an orphanage. A big part of being a missionary is loving the unloved of the world and that's what they have done for 20+ years. It's hard to leave the children you've grown up with and cared for for that long.

Crazy thing is I’m going on a cruise to labadi in northern Haiti in November. But I have a small advantage, I’m a natural born Haitian and know to stay the at least 50 miles away from the capital. Everywhere else is fine. All the rich Haitian families are staying in Haiti and enjoy their money on a Caribbean island. If you’re not from there, don’t speak the language or know how things work, stay away. Even if you’re a white missionary who’s been living in Haiti forever, You’re risking your life for very little in this new gang era in Haiti. Things have just changed way too fast in the country.

Take a few minutes to learn & read of these kind, compassionate people. They are not suicidal. They loved Life they loved God & His Word & were willing & able to go, successfully work in the walled Compound , Bakery, school, and home. They operated with caution, armed security, and Faith. This is a new level of violence against American Missionaries, some had been abducted for Ransome, but not killed. They were killed & now a line has been crossed. There very well may be more. Through it all , there also well may be something new for Haiti. After this coming war there will be a settled peace & a new beginning. An army of dedicated, companionate, able & faithful, God Fearing people are awakening to a call to take up and continue this mission. In the coming years we will look back and see clearer what all actually transpired. God sees it all. The Martyr Stephen was also such a case . Saul converted to Paul the apostle. What an impact they left on their generation. The same will happen now

Most Christian missionaries don't proselytize like the Mormons and JW's. Most Christian missionaries are spreading love and charity to those in need. Haiti is filled with orphans and poverty. That's why they go to places like that- to help people, bring them healthy food and water, education, dentistry, medical needs, how to be self-reliant, care for orphans and abandoned children, etc.

What kind of parents stay in an environment where their five year old has been kidnapped? That young man was deeply indoctrinated by his parents. The wifes parents also failed her, she was still a teen when she married him. They shouldn't have allowed that. They were rich enough to get him away from her. Thankfully they didnt have the opportunity to bring any children into this situation. It's so important to encourage children to develop a strong survival instinct and think in common sense so they don't end up in a completely avoidable situation like this.

They took the risk going into a very dangerous situation. I don’t believe you should be doing missionary work unless you have a high level skill in professions such as medicine and engineering. Going into a dangerous situation when you are unskilled and inexperienced, no matter how well intentioned, puts others at risk and further complicates a situation. The state department should not have allowed it, but daddy is a senator.

I'm glad you brought up the fact that it puts locals at greater risk of harm. Why they chose to ignore this is troubling. There were problems years ago with people trafficking orphaned children years ago. I'm not saying they were guilty of this but why did they put others at risk. Jealousy in a time of war brings attention to charities and it reaches a point that you are exploring people with little options to be at risk.

When they walked into heaven together they were full of Joy at giving their lives for Jesus
