The good ol’ centurion 🇬🇧 mad to think some variants were used as late as 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict the Israel Defense Forces employed modified Centurions as APC’s and combat engineering vehicles. The South African National Defence Force also still employs over 170 Centurions, which were modernised in the 1980s and 2000s into the ‘olifant’ mk1 , it has a locally produced gun, power pack, transmission, tracks, wheels and fire control system and thus, at least the Olifant 2 can be seen as almost a new tank… ‘almost’ being the key word

One thing that’s always amazing to me is how crude even the best made stuff was back then vs now. When I was a kid my first exposure to vintage war machines was in miniature and the model biz didn’t have the tech to represent such imperfections until like thr last 15 years or so especially on airplanes with their warping of riveted plates. Eventually my folks took me to war museums at my request. They supported this and were grateful I had no interest in amusement parks. I was shocked by how crude the assembly of these things what they accomplished even more impressive.

Everyone loves to hate the Sherman, without looking at all the facts. Like the US had to ship them across oceans instead of just rolling them out the back of a factory. Or that they were never intended to take on heavy German tanks. Or that the heavy German tanks were so unreliable only a fraction ever made it into combat. Or that there were only three actual engagements between Shermans and Tigers and Shermans won all three. Or that if you get assigned the terrible job of cleaning out blown up tanks and then write a book, you undoubtedly see the Sherman only as a death trap.

@fedfrederick5607 Myth. German heavy tanks actually had a better than 70% operational average in 1944. It was near 80%. At the end of September they actually reached a high of 98%. Source. Thomas L Jentz, Tiger I and II Combat Tactics. I can assure you that there were more than 3 Sherman v Tiger engagements, with the kill ratio well in favour of the Tiger.

@fredfrederick5607 On 9th August 1944 during Operation Totalize the Canadian 28th Armoured Regiment at Estrees la Campagne /Quesnay Wood lost a whopping 44 Shermans, mostly to a small number of Tigers from Schwere SS Panzer Abteilung 101. No Tigers were lost. The Tigers stood off and sniped them from 1,000 yards and more. It was a complete one sided annihilation. Without mass artillery, infantry and air support the Sherman was a mediocre tank in direct frontal engagements v Tigers. During Operation Totalize, Tigers had a 10:1 kill ratio v Shermans overall. 60 plus Shermans lost compared to only 6 Tigers. That's direct Tiger v Sherman engagements.

A number of things I can pick up from this: 1. This tank was used for target practice and was NOT lost on the battlefield. 2. The holes on it are of uniform (to a degree) and circular, hinting it was not shrapnel from explosives but bullets (most likely from a .50 or larger like shoulder launched AT practice rounds) 3. The American markings on the tank along with the placard suggest that this tank was used for target practice by West Germany 4. The side with the missing road wheels seems to have been subjected to explosives / AT rounds suggested by the large, torn away radio compartment and the missing road wheels. 5. @@yungdomino4718 yes that's true! I was just joking and I think dasboot6935 was joking too. Fact is that guns mounted on tanks could also be demiled and stay in place, just like those guns on display in many other museums. But I guess that because of the fact that this Sherman is located outside the risk of theft is too big and also the exposure to weather conditions would harm the gun...watch my new video telling the story of this tank here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/c4Gix6uPmcunmrA.html
