DESTROYED by the British - The Old Summer Palace 圆明园

The Old Summer Palace was the grandest of Chinese Imperial Gardens. In 1860 during the second Opium War it was looted and burnt to the ground by British and French forces - here is the story....

The reality is most of the beautiful objects in British museums are not…British. But of course the Anglos were dastardly thieves and still control exquisite and historic objects like the Parthenon marbles (I’m not mentioning the name of the British bastard who looted them).

Britain should return all stolen treasures to China and other countries she invaded & colonised. It's the right thing to do , not to mention the countless dead during the invasion. Even though this happened long long time ago , a apology is needed & it's appropriate. Shame for stealing & shame for not returning. Shame indeed. 🇸🇬

The hostility, racism and discrimination it has shown towards Chinese people have continued to this day as if it is still fighting the Opium Wars. It is labelling China a threat, banned Huawei, banned China from participating in its nuclear power station project, formed alliances against China, constantly interfering in internal affairs, and so on.

Shame doesn't even cross their minds, just look at Palstine geno, U$UK are the only 2 terror states vetoing a ceasefire, they wanted to inflict and supported as much destructions as possible, just as their ancestors did in Summer Palace and now in Palstine and all over the world. The British and French troops were led by Lord Elgin, the son of the other Lord Elgin who looted the Elgin Marbles from the Parthenon Greece. Looting and theft seems to run in the family. There are other videos of this famous ruin of the old Summer Palace, but never showing the parkland and paths. It's good to get an expanded perspective of this Palace Garden from your walk. Thanks. When Chinese people spoke of these period, they always refer to "the Eight Allied Nation", not just the British and French. The G8 allied forces that invaded the Qing Dynasty with military actions in 1900 are: (1) the British Empire, (2) the United States of America, (3) the Third Republic of France, (4) the German Empire, (5) the Russian Empire, (6) the Japanese Empire, (7) the Austria Hungary Empire (8) the Italian kingdom. Chinese students should commit these names to their memory.

The amazing thing is there are many today who'd defend the English, even highly educated ones who are into histories or antiques. I've heard podcasts by historians or at least hobby historians making overtures that a lot of these stolen pieces were not really stolen because the old Chinese didn't have museums at the time nor did they treat them as such. It wasn't just art but they also throw in priceless artifacts like ones taken from the Mogao Caves in truck loads and without permission. Some argue the West had actually saved these works from destruction/loss/not recognized during years of China's decline. Sure, most argued the burning of the Summer Palace was tragic, but they also hinted that the British could have done worse, as if the English had "held" their hand.... And to think of all the other nations the English and the West had done that to, that these mighty countries could be so comfortable in refusing to return these stolen goods, while touting words like freedom and justice and democracy, lecturing China and others how to behave as we supply bombs and weapons to Ukraine and Israel.... Yups, these men of freedom and justice are out there alright, including a lot working at the British Museum I imagine. May be that would explain why every time the Indiana Jones theme comes on I run for a paper bag. Now if only someone goes and burns down the Buckingham....

Man, every time I peep at The Old Summer Palace, my heart sinks like a stone in a swamp. That joint used to be the ultimate flex in Chinese Imperial Gardens, straight-up majestic, you feel me? But then, in 1860, smack dab in the middle of the second Opium War, it got straight-up wrecked, looted, and torched by those British and French forces. Like, what the actual hell, right? It's a tragedy on steroids, a historical gut punch that leaves you feeling like you just got sucker-punched in the feels. Just imagining all that opulence and beauty going up in flames makes my blood boil. Those imperial gardens were more than just fancy plants and pretty rocks; they were a symbol of culture, history, and damn it, pride. And those invaders just stomped all over it like they owned the place. while we mourn the loss of The Old Summer Palace, let's also use it as a reminder to stand strong in the face of adversity and never let the bastards grind us down.

Then what do you think of looting and burning down the Palace of Versailles? Or looting and burning the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg? Actually the nazis heavily damaged the Winter Palace but the Soviets went all in to fix the damage. The Chinese CORRECTLY WANT the DESTROYED Summer Palace to stand as a reminder to the "Century of Humiliation".

Thanks for filming these ruins of the Summer Palace. I'm old now and can't travel to see for myself. This is one of several events which began what China today calls their "century of humiliation". Despite the Chinese calling the colonisers "sea barbarians" the emperor and people were far too complacent, too unwary, just how vicious the barbarians could be, too inward looking as the "middle kingdom" to realise or know about the Viking impulse inherit in the British mentality.

Yes, it has happened a long time ago but the Briitsh government have offered no apology, have not returned the priceless cultural treasures, and on top of that, it (along with the British media) keeps trashing China, making baseless claims about human rights and aggression, and dismissing China progress and emergence from its century-long difficulties - which the British played a huge role in creating, as this vlogger points out. I think if the British government and media simply stopped trashing and bashing China, it would go a long way toward healing and creating true good will between the peoples, even without an apology or returning the treasure.

Good video. I looked up the Summer Palace on the internet to find more information. UNESCO have got a good article. Yes the objects should be returned. Not as if another Cultural revolution will see them destroyed. As Nick says back in the Imperial past bad stuff was done. Lesson learned. Though as he says some more recent decisions still not good. Maybe Nick should visit the Kashgar Grand Bazaar and explain to us all the old features. Prehaps some go back further than the Qing dynasty after all the city is 2k years old.

They actually built a new Yuan Ming Yuan in Zhuhai. It brings together the most famous 18 sights in the old Yuan Ming Yuan. But the original should definitely not be restored or rebuilt but kept as a memorial to what happened in the 19th century when China was weak and got trampled by the western imperial powers.

I took part in a documentary film about the history of Yuan Ming Yuan. I played Lord Elgin. Although Elgin was the emissary of a foul policy (opium peddling backed by military force) he wasn't himself a violent man. When he was governor of Canada his house was attacked by a mob and he said he would rather his house was destroyed than that the police open fire on the mob. Of course his campaigns in China were quite violent, the Europeans had Armstrong guns which had twice the range of the smooth bore cannons that the Qing soldiers had and the Chinese were wiped out. As for Yuan Ming Yuan, Elgin had led the army up the river to Beijing and he had to make a retreat because winter was setting in. He was under orders to inflict a decisive blow to the Chinese and he burned Yuan Ming Yuan, I believe, because his argument was with the Qing rulers and not with the Chinese people. The alternative would have been to massacre soldiers and commoners. Remember that at that time Yuan Ming Yuan was the private property of the emperor and no ordinary person would ever be allowed in, so that even though it was a wonderful garden, it was almost entirely closed. Nobody imagined that scarcely half a century later the Xinhai Revolution would make the gardens the property of the Chinese people. In any case, the fact that it has this historical significance means that it will probably never be built over, so it remains a beautiful open space full of historical associations where people can walk and hold festivals and play accordions and do taiji. It was always one of my favourite places in Beijing.

When you tell the story you need to tell the truth .... This is what happened ... The British delegation that had gone to negotiate Chinese surrender had been taken prisoner. Some members, including the journalist Bowlby, were tortured and murdered. "For three days the men were tied up, and for three days their bandages were soaked with water so that they would become tighter and tighter," says historian Vera Schwarcz. "Every time they begged for water their mouths would be filled with dirt." Eventually several prisoners died, their corpses hardly recognisable. In response, Lord Elgin ordered the British troops to burn down the entire Summer Palace complex. The destruction, he wrote later, was intended "to mark, by a solemn act of retribution, the horror and indignation... with which we were inspired by the perpetration of a great crime". I am not condoning what Lord Elgin did but you'd have to agree with me when a delegation is send to negotiate a peace deal they should be treated with respect, instead they were brutally murdered. If the Chinese had not murdered the British delegation then their palace would still be here today .... TELL IT LIKE IT IS SAM !!!

Back in 200 years, it's hard to define civilization vs. barbarianism. Beyond the loss in this garden, a much greater cultural loss is that, many Chinese started to consider their own culture as inferior, disdained and forsook some of the core values in Chinese culture. This trend has been ongoing until today.

Not entirely by British, it’s actually by both corrupted Qin royalty and Chinese people themselves, the royalty spent a fortune building this magnificent palace as their private amusement park while the rest of country was in tatters, when British and bunch other western countries break into Beijing(peking at the time), civilians didn’t amount even slightest of resistance, they hated Qin’s royalty so much some of them even helped British and French with their raid. British and French were definitely not Salvation Army, but Qin sort of did themselves in.

Despite the passing of years, sadly the Brits n its Western allies led by US have never let go of my country! Their pirate DNA is still very much alive! Our ancestors suffered immensely during the Opium War. In fact the city I'm now living in was under the British Colonial rule for almost 200 years n was only returned to my Motherland in 1997.
