Why did the British Attack China Again? - The Second Opium War

Why did the British Attack China Again? - The Second Opium War
By the 1850s, Britain had been attempting to gain even more influence and privileges within China and aimed to take full advantage of its possession of Hong Kong. As part of this strategy, the British began to grant registration for some of the Chinese-operated ships in Hong Kong, with one of those vessels being the Arrow.

    I'm just glad these assholes didn't show up on our doorstep a few years later during OUR Civil War. The Confederates wanted their help but I wouldn't be surprised if they imposed something on them for a price, such as a partial return of Louisiana to France or various port access to both nations. This would be an awesome alternate history. The CSA was not the USA; it didn't give a damn about European colonization. It probably wanted to get into the business itself. It wouldn't be above letting European powers use its territory.

    The US was an active participant in the Second Opium war during the Battle of the Barrier Forts and the Second Battle of the Taku forts , killing up to 500 Chinese troops. So while the US could claim "neutrality," its Naval Commanders, far out of contact with Washington, could pretty much get away with anything. And did repeatedly, in Sumatra, Vietnam, Korea, throughout Central and South America. Western Navies roamed the globe, desperately in search of pretenses, an insult, a bar-fight, not allowing "wahines" to swim out to your ship, etc., and the troops would start landing, the cannons blazing. For example, US troops invaded Canton under the oft used "pretense" of protecting American lives, used dozens of times on several continents. Invited to leave, during the withdrawal, the Taku Forts fired a couple of warning shots at the rowboats being used to evacuate the US forces. Firing warning shots at suspicious, potentially hostile craft was SOP during the 19th Century...presumeably the four forts could've sank a few rowboats if they'd intended to. This gave the US Naval forces the pretense they needed to attack and destroy the forts. And of course, the US benefited from the infamous unequal treaties. Not until 1949, did the US finally withdraw its ships and men from China. An aside. Watch the outstanding movie Sand Pebbles with Steve Mcqueen about this era.

  • @stephenjenkins7971

    @stephenjenkins7971

    And the US would do so again, considering that the Battle of the Barrier Forts only occurred because they fired on US ships. US paid lip service to the Coalition by sending marines and then withdrawing with no violence; only to get fired on while they were withdrawing. If that was a pretense, then the Chinese made the mistake of not ignoring it and instead incited yet another power at a time it could ill afford it. Imperialism was the name of the game, and China was a big fan...until it was the weaker party.

    it was clearly an excuse to attack. No sovereign nation would allow an army/armed navy from a hostile nation into its territory and that has always been common knowledge, so the admiral must have known that. This is like if Russia had shown up with an army on Ukraine's doorstep and said we need to escort our ambassador to Kyiv, let the entire army in. Then when they were obviously declined, they attacked. It would rightly be seen as nothing more than an excuse to attack

The thing I remember as a disinterested teenager, is when he said he was talking to an elderly Chinese man as he crossed a river in a boat and the old man said to him; "Come back in 1000 years and lets see who is still going to be here". Because the Chinese people are actually a cultural concept rather than a racial concept.Chinese culture has a strong inclusiveness and assimilation, and many ethnic groups, ideas and religions are eventually integrated into Chinese culture.Like Confucianism, Legalism, Buddhism, Taoism,including modern Marxist-Leninist.Because Chinese philosophy differs from Western philosophy in emphasizing duality,Chinese philosophy emphasizes fusion and transformation.Its source comes from a book in ancient China,“I-Ching(易经)”.This is the reason why Chinese civilization can continue to this day

  • @Homer-OJ-Simpson

    @@goodluck250 yeah, that’s sounds right historically though not true in my opinion under the CCP. The “Chinese culture” continued for thousands of years because if a non Han group conquered china, that group would assimilate or accept much of Chinese culture and modify it only slightly. Europe in contrast has various religious differences, various languages, various groups of somewhat similar population sizes, etc. And before nationalism started becoming popular in the 1800’s, the people did not care much about who took over so long as they can practice their Christian beliefs. Roman culture disappeared in 1453 because a group took over that was wildly different and which religion was ultra important - the Muslims Turks. The lack of one dominant religion that is a deep part of one’s identity such as the Abrahamic religions (Islam Christianity Judaism) is a major reason why Chinese continued as a culture. That divide in Europe and Middle East / Central Asia lead to many cultural changes.

While China has had one culture that has changed over time but remained Chinese, is there really an Indian culture that goes far back? It’s been changed by so many factors such as Islam vs Hindu vs the smaller religions, different languages, etc. they are so diverse because they didn’t accept one Indian culture and India land as we know it today was almost never unified. India is probably more similar to the whole of Europe.

    @@Homer-OJ-Simpson Indigenization of religions and ideas will inevitably occur in the process of dissemination. CCP is the same in China, localization has already happened as early as Mao Zedong’s time.This is a question about interpretation of doubts and a game of interests.Culture and system are complementary relationship. During the Qin Dynasty, the concept of a unified prefecture and county system appeared in China, but due to the lack of cultural integration, the Qin Dynasty soon perished. Until the Han Dynasty, after the emperor promoted Confucianism, Confucianism became a very important part of Chinese culture.Because the system created by the Qin Dynasty and the Han Dynasty complemented the culture, Chinese civilization has experienced many divisions in history, but eventually it still moves towards a great unification. The system in ancient China is different from the feudal system in Europe. China is a dynasty.Because the aristocratic system has begun to weaken in the Tang Dynasty of China, the royal power overwhelmed the aristocrats through the alliance of the scholar-bureaucrat class, but the European aristocracy has continued into modern times, and their energy can still be seen even now.India has always been a geographical concept before the founding of the modern nation, and it is indeed a large version of Europe as you said

    Well, perhaps you don't understand what "Germanic" means.Germanic has nothing to do with modern Germany, which wasn't created until 1870. British is actually the correct term, because you have to consider that it's a culture that grew from many influences.Ultimately, the Norman invasion with the hope of "total autocratic rule," took over an Anglo-Saxon culture which was practising and early form of republic, with many different interconnected communities, operating with a king that was only so for galvanising troops in times of war and discussing relations with other states should a single voice need to be communicated with, to prevent war or invasion.This all broke down because their last king didn't have an Anglo-Saxon child and therefore the throne passed to a hybrid Viking/Frankish/Gallo-Roman cultural spin-off called the Normans. *Ultimately, this autocratic culture was shaped by the Anglo-Saxons, plus the Celts in Scotland and Wales down the centuries to mean that something more decentralised was achieved in the 17th century as constituency-based, Parliamentary democracy. This is not often talked about, but there were so many uprisings, due to Royal violations of different human and Civil Rights legislation, enforced on kings, despite numerous murders and imprisonments, the people stayed firm and wouldn't pay taxes, leading to desperation from Kings and signing documents, they wouldn't have otherwise.None of this was happening in Different German state,Scandinavian or French culture, where autocratic rule was total and dissent crushed unilaterally. The catalyst was irrefutably Anglo-Saxon common-law (1041), which was insisted upon, despite constant brutal opposition by William the Conqueror, leading to the Charter of liberties (1100) being coerced from King John, after William died… The rest is history These influences are irrefutable and even Voltaire running away from backward, autocratic, intolerant French culture, said of England, after being there as the only place where he could fled to to speak his mind in 1726 onwards: - "this is the land of liberty", "the English are nation of philosophers", "the 1st free state" and "England taught Europe how to think". These quotes are taken from his letters to Friends in France and books decades later, eg: lettres sur la Anglais and la Henrietta

    @@CP-qo7tz it has always been a mess. If it wasn't debauched emperor's, it was corrupt eunuchs, and crazy peasant rebellions that only ever recreate the former dynasty again, and watch it degrade into nepotism and privation AGAIN. I wish they could just stand up and be independent without crippling regimes handicapping them.

    @@ommsterlitz1805 No, so England (and lowland Scotland) genetically are a mix of Anglo-saxons and Celts. When the Germanic migrants got to the island it is likely they took Celtic wives who raised their children then in Anglo-Saxon culture. So the majority of indigenous Brit’s have paternal Anglo-Saxon genes but maternal Celtic ones. The Normans were just the ruling class in England and only around 8000 Norman’s actually settled in England. The US originally was vast majority Anglo settlers with some Dutch, Scot’s and Irish and white Americans still are but generally modern Americans like to identify with there more recent ancestor who came to the US. So someone 3/4 Anglo Saxon would say they’re of German descent if they have a German last name/German grand father so English Americans are under counted. Hope this helps :)

    @@Nishkid641 no bro. Afghanistan is not commonwealth country. It's not even in UN and even WHO has NO JURISDICTION in Afghanistan. There's literally no proof that Afghanistan was defeated. The fact that Afghanistan still dubbed The Graveyard Of Empires after British empire attacked it is proof that British got defeated and collapsed after. Just like USSR and USA. Lol. Idiot. There's not even a shred of british influence like India and Pakistan in the government of Afghanistan. Idiot think!!
