Designing the PUDDLE JUMPER and More Stargate Fighter Craft (Dial the Gate)

Ойын-сауық

STARGATE SET ITSELF APART with some amazing ships, both alien and Earth-made, both large capital ships and those sleek fighter craft. Would you rather fly an F-302 or a Puddle Jumper? An Asgard warship or a Lantean battle cruiser?
"Dial the Gate" host David Read goes behind the scenes of designing Stargate with long-time Stargate art director and production designer Bridget McGuire. In her more than 10 years with the franchise she helped create such iconic pieces as the Puddle Jumper, the F-302 fighter interceptor, the Wraith Dart, and many more. In this clip she talks about the look and functionality of the Atlantis Puddle Jumpers (inside and out), extending ships with visual effects, and the practicalities of filming on set and on location. Bridget also reveals what household device inspired the Jumper's unique shape.
This clip is from Dial the Gate's full-length, 80-minute conversation with Bridget. Watch the full interview here: • 210: Bridget McGuire, ...

I loved the retractable pods and the mini drones they used as weapons. And all the compartments all over the place just made it feel so practical.

The puddle jumper was such a brilliant design! Just the right size, not too simple, but as complex as needed... it is such a fantastic & perfect, iconic addition to the set/ inventory of Ancient/Lantean tech. And it was such a central & crucial component of so many storylines! I never did understand why they didn't bring at least one of them back to the Milky Way for Earth to use as required, especially since they have a cloak... Cuz obviously the one with Janis's time machine was just far too great of a risk to use! Even though the DHD wouldn't work with the Milky Way gates (although, I'm sure that they could adapt & reprogram it somehow), it would still be such a valuable asset for the SGC/Earth. LOVE THE JUMPER!!!

that's gotta be one of the coolest jobs for a creative person, coming up with all sorts of details and designs then having them shape the whole show. I know there's more people involved with that big task from the sets to the visual effects, but still must be a great job. The F-302 is soooo iconic in particular, I've really come to love the appearance even more than when it was new haha

the funny thing about the concept of the puddle jumper is back when the first stargate movie was being made, one of the ideas of the kinds of ships they were envisioning for Ra's death gliders, the first idea looked like a blocky kind of craft that would fit through the gate similar to the jumper design, but i think the jumper fits the look far better than the one described by the original movie, but artists envisioned look. but i love the idea that the jumper also transforms out the weapons platform that just ejects from the ship to form sort of wings, now they of course aren't wings, but they extend out of the hull of the ship and they can also retract, i just thought that design was very intuitive and smart and made sense that they would use such a ship to go through the gate.

Makes me wonder.. If they would have found the DHD next to the Stargate in Egypt - how much different would "our" technology be? Carter and McKay only found ways to "interface" with the crystal-based computers in those machines. Apparently, they never built own computers with that architecture. I presume it's because it would be very hard to convince anyone to port over Excel..

The design of the Puddle Jumpers always reminded me of the the old horse drawn Gypsy caravans.

Fun fact, the Nighthawk was actually a stealth bomber but given a fighter designation to make it a more attractive assignment for pilots.

Maybe not, but the SGC had a bad record when they "acquired" ships other than the Puddle Jumpers from other alien sources. They had a tendency to get destroyed either in the same episode or shortly thereafter.

"Person who made it" worked on two dozen different shows, remembering specifics for a certain show after all these years is bound to be tricky.
