Desert Eagle: The Pop Culture Icon Nobody Uses - Loadout

Ойындар

A heavy duty hand cannon with an imposing title and a big bang to match, the Desert Eagle is one of the most famous handguns in history. It appears in hundreds of movies and games, from The Matrix to Call of Duty, Max Payne to Austin Powers, but despite its prominence in our favorite media, it is seldom seen in the real world. So how did a gun that sees almost no serious use get so much pop culture attention?
In this episode of Loadout, Dave Jewitt visits the Royal Armouries to talk to Keeper of Firearms & Artillery Jonathan Ferguson to find out why the Desert Eagle might not be the all-conquering weapon that games and movies would have you believe.

As a Desert Eagle owner I can can confirm that they are heavy (weigh nearly 5lbs unloaded), impractical, expensive ($1699 and up) and awkward to handle for newcomers. However they are a fun range toy and can definitely be used in a self defense role. Granted you'd probably take care of the threat in front of you and who ever was unfortunate enough to be on the other side of the wall behind them. The 357 variant is probably the most practical in terms of cost (ammo) and actual utility. Unless you've got an out break of bears, T-rex, tigers (the tank) or the sudden urge to to dislocate your wrist whilst taking down that pesky government satellite.

It's a lot harder for the police to use the argument that you used excessive force when individuals shot with it are more likely to survive and be pacified. It's also just harder to accidentally shoot too many times, which again the police might use against you. Usually excessive force is homeowners using shotguns with spread like buckshot or hollow points, which are almost guaranteed to cause death/numerous surgeries by design or they get you with the "Why did you shoot 5 times?". Even still the smartest home defense is a shotgun loaded with slugs.

@@yetanother9127 Eh, .454 Casull has similar muzzle energy to some of the hotter loaded .50AE rounds, and the Desert Eagle does have a higher capacity (7+1 vs. 6) and less recoil due to said gas system as well as being semi auto. So the Desert Eagle is practical in that sense, although the gas system does also mean it's more maintenance intensive. As the proud owner of a desert eagle 50ae, I'm happy to say that I love it and is my most favorite possession that I own. But that being said, I can also attest to the fact that it is slow, heavy, and thus inaccurate (certainly at least if you don't have the strength and grip to steady it). Another problem with it that is rarely mentioned (a fact rarely covered with any gun) is the fact that it's high maintenance. I say that because I made the rookie mistake of not cleaning the thing for a while after using it and found out the hard way that if a gun gets too much powder in it, it can rust all the parts and lock it, which is especially bad considering that desert eagle has to be a pretty well tuned in order to handle all that power. But I managed to get it fixed and I'm happy to say it's working again, but I have come to say from experience though that it is certainly not a gun for everybody. Me on the other hand, I liked it for its power and appearance; and if power comes with a price this is one of those times I gladly paid it.

For me, that's the very reason I chose the Dirt Bird! Gas-operated, rotating (and very mutated-AR-looking) bolt, polygonal rifling. The versions with bolt-on and integrated compensators are both bonkers. The 10" barreled model is beyond absurd. It's just so weird, while the Grizz truly is just a giant 1911. The LAR makes the widely-available MR gun look like a bargain as well: the only LAR I've seen in person a few years ago was used, albeit in factory-floor mint condition, and the seller was asking $2,950. And it was in puny .357. At a glance on GunJoker, I see a 45WinMag with a starting bid of $2,450, and another with a 'buy-it-now' of $4,525. I'll stick with the Deagle and the extra 3 mags of ammo that $2k difference will get me :D

Not to mention: One full magazine of 7 rounds equals between 15 and 20+ bucks in ammunition. And the cartridges usually come in packs of 20. That stuff is indeed expensive AF, even if you buy in bulk (in which case you clearly have too much money on your hands). I remember the gun mags at the time going on about how this would be the new generation of carry guns for military and law enforcement, old school 1911's and revolvers were now obsolete and .357 magnum was the absolute minimum and up to two extra rounds over a revolver would make all the difference ...

@@reaganharder1480 Between the two something like a S&W 686 with seven shots is probably the better option. But back then people really believed everyone was going to adopt the Desert Eagle, just like all the target shooters dismissed the Glock as a silly inaccurate plastic pistol that needed 17 shots to be slightly stable. The amount of change in gun culture from the 1980's to today is incredible.

I shot one at a range in Thailand some 10 years back. Even seated and braced on a bag the kick was ungainly. If you had to use one unexpectedly for self defense, without ear protection, I reckon you'd be gambling with deafness even if you come out fine.

It rewards skill, at least in counter strike. That makes it so prestigious to use and master. Plenty of memorable plays from the best players are achieved by this weapon choice and have direct impact to important matches at giant tournaments. In a game I played during my childhood, Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus, the Deagle had a gold variant unlocked at rank 71 (out of 72) and I believe that is the highest I ever reached.

i disagree with it being inaccurate. no play in how the barrel locks onto the frame, its as accurate as the shooter. mines cerakoted in a nice chameleon purple/green. heavy to help recoil, slow because ur throwing 2-3 dollars downrange with each shot. its fun to bring out and end a session and to turn heads :)

buddy of mine makes his own ammo, he let me shoot diffrent guns and his favorite magnum calibar was a revolver, not the Deagle. It totally makes a diffrence on recoil, how much blackpowder there is in your ammunition. It can have as little of a recoil as a normal handgun, either way, the experience was great since im not too knowledgable or used to guns, living in europe.
