James is 100% correct to not engage the Orange Order. I grew up in England, and then lived in Belfast for a few years, and during that time the Oranges didn't respect my Englishness; in fact, an Englishman who hangs out with Catholics is WORSE to them. In their minds, I was (and therefore James would be) a "traitor".

Orange marches are a series of parades by members of the Orange Order and other Protestant fraternal societies, held during the summer months in various Commonwealth nations, most notably Ulster. The parades typically build up to 12 July celebrations marking Prince William of Orange's victory over King James II & VII at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. Orange walks are considered controversial and face opposition from Catholics, Irish nationalists and Scottish nationalists who see the parades as sectarian and triumphalist. They have also drawn criticism in recent years from other religious communities, left-wing groups, and trade unions.

Theres a real irony here, that even in England, the Orange Order is considered... strange... I mean... The Order celebrates a time that the rightful king was overthrown, the Dutch King was invited to rule, who proceeded to land an army, and the English nobility didn't put up so much of a fight. As a method of celebrating anti-Catholicism, its pretty on point. But as a method of British Nationalism? *The time we overthrow the British King and invited Dutch Rule* isn't very... Pro-British. If you ask me. Its really quite bizarre...

@Rusty Shackleford There's a tendency to think the that troubles were between Britian and Ireland, and that N.Ireland was this battleground. But, whilst that may have been true of early 20th Century Irish Politics, where the IRA was the legitimate Irish military, that isn't really true of the later troubles; which were localised around Northern Ireland. To most English people, the Ireland situation was resolved with the formation of the Irish Free State, and have no ill will to Ireland anymore than they would India, America, South Africa or the rest of the commonwealth. Whether that is a fair or appropriate attitude to take is another question entirely. But the English don't really learn any Irish History. The experiences of the Northern Irish during the troubles of the 1970s onwards were not shared at all by the people on the Island of Britian. As far as the English were concerned that Troubles were between two groups of people in Northern Ireland who wanted to join the Republic, and people who wanted to remain part of the UK; and it was fundementally nothing to do with either Ireland or the UK until 'they' sorted it out. Of course it's delusional to think you can entirely divorce Northern Ireland from either of the two countries. There's 1000 years to unpack. But there you have it. Most English are astonishingly ignorant of Irish History, let alone recent Irish Politics. Too ignorant to hold one opinion or the other. I think the sad fact is that most English don't seem to care strongly one way or the other. The Orangsists are seen as rather silly and pretentious. At best. And there are Catholics living in Britian. The average Englishman doesn't understand why there aren't many fiercely unionist Catholics. The notion of something so political being divided on religious lines is something that is alien to most of the English. The one thing everyone seems to agree on is that we cannot afford to go backwards.

The order celebrates king William as the deliverer of freedom for protestants in ireland. Up until he overthrew the Catholic monarchy there was untold amounts of instances of genocide against irish protestants. The orange order was established as a fraternity to defend the protestant community. More ironic that you pretend to know about a subject which you clearly have little to no understanding of.

The Orange Order are conservative Protestants in Northern Ireland who favour union with the United Kingdom. Although Derry is in Northern Ireland, it is mostly Catholic and our main characters are Catholic (James too). In the 90s it was common for the Orange Order to march near Catholic areas, resulting in fights. Also the parades usually have a heavy security presence (like the policeman pointing his gun at them) so there's more chance of them getting into trouble. All this is funnier when you remember the entire reason the Quinns planned this trip in the first place was to escape the noise and fuss caused by the parade.
