Derrick White On The Crazy Good Celtics, Tatum's MVP Season, Coach Pop (Plus Mina Kimes!)

Спорт

The Old Man and The Three is back with two amazing interviews. First up we have Boston Celtics guard, Derrick White. If you haven't heard Derrick's story then be prepared to start cheering for this guy because he has one of the most unique NBA journeys we've ever heard. First he talks about being a 5'6" freshman in high school - unrecruited and undersized to first round draft pick in The NBA Draft. He talks about his college journey and paying off student loans WHILE playing in The NBA. Other topics include: Being drafted by The San Antonio Spurs and what he learned playing for Gregg Popovich, getting traded from The San Antonio Spurs to The Boston Celtics, what it's actually like for NBA players during the 24-48 hours right after getting traded, trying to fit into The Boston Celtics offense with Jayson Tatum, Marcus Smart and Al Horford, what it's like playing with Jayson Tatum, marveling over Tatum's playoff performance last season and pinpointing the subtle changes he's made to his game this season that's made him even more of a thread, Derrick shares just how awesome Joe Mazzulla has been as the Celtics head coach in light of all the moving parts, what Marcus Smart is really like off the court, just what exactly is making this Celtics team so good right now and so much more. And finally, Mina Kimes joins us to talk about Super Bowl predictions and draft "Topics you shouldn't bring up around the holidays" which leads to some real revelations about Tommy Alter. You can't miss this one.

D White was my neighbor, my son's friend and I coached him in baseball growing up. He was so small, we had him bunt 90% of his at bats, cuz he couldn't hit the ball out of the infield, but he was so fast. We kept shaking our head wondering when will this kid's growth spurt kick in. But, man - Heart of a Lion and major competitor. It was fun to watch this episode as I literally think I've only heard him utter 4 words in all the time I knew him; he was so quiet, but so intensely focused on being his best and a great teammate. Lesson to be learned for anyone wanting to play at the next level - every time I went to the gym to workout, there was D-White shooting in the gym and working on his game. He put in the work and countless hours to achieve his goals. Love this kid, Love his family. Way to go D! Congrats to you my man.

Absolute killer on the court and nicest person ever off the court! He’s not that quiet now though, always cracking jokes with his teammates! Just has to get comfortable around people before he comes out. I’m the same way honestly! I was so quiet people thought I was weird lol. But yea such a cool Story bro! Thanks for sharing that! I’m a Celtics fan and Derrick is one of my favorite players on the team. I feel like some C’s fans and a lot of NBA fans (besides Spurs fans) don’t understand just how good he is. I remember that series against the Nuggets where he balled out. He just does so many things well and doesn’t really make many mistakes. Oh and his 3 point shot this year has been outstanding compared to when we got him last year

I'm a Celtics fan too and honestly as I grew older I never had the time anymore to follow other teams. I have heard of Derrick White the Spurs starter pre-Celtics so I know he got game, but I was pleasantly surprised when he got traded. Such a high IQ guy, accepts his role, steps up in big moments. Not to mention he's so humble. I'm happy to have guys like him and Al on the team, their contributions are invaluable.

Same. I always remembered that series and especially that game against the Nuggets too. And people, even Celtics fans, definitely don't realize how good he is. He makes the offense run for us by making everything go smoothly. Even during the playoffs he was a sneaky really great driver, even though he doesn't look like it, and his rim pressure really opened things up for us. I love our trifecta of guards in Smart, Brogdon and White. I don't think there is a better trio of guards where none of them is a superstar than what we've got. I hope we can keep them for a long time. Those 3, the Jays, Grant and Rob mean great teams for a long time, even if it'll be sad to see Al go. Hope he stays around the team somehow.

Man I love Derrick White. He seems like such a chill, humble, good dude. From his hat to the way he talks he emits good vibes. Love having him on the Celtics, and he clearly put the work in this offseason. Running with the starters, running the second unit, knocking down open 3's. Also to go from an organization like the Spurs to the Celtics as they make their banner push, just what a great guy to have.

I didn't like that comment, because we got him to go out there and ball, not walk on eggshells. This year he's more relaxed it seems and just playing his game. Love this guy. Underrated and Underappreciated by fans because his not vocal or explosive kind player that will Wow the media and fans. However, his always Team first be a starter or off the bench. They should let him handle the ball more often, i like the way he take his time and analyze the situation rather than have him stuck at the corner three. Great player should be in all defensive team

JJ and Tommy, your podcast is consistently the best! Hands down! One word of advice. You don't need shockmounts for this setting. I think they're a little distracting. If not already, try dynamic mics instead. Maybe I'm wrong, just my humble 2 cent.

I love the San Antonio Spurs, the always draft players that are selfless. Players that play hard, and Derrick was one of those players. I’m glad that Coaches that go through Pops system are extremely successful. I wish they kept Derrick, great player, but I like watching him be successful and making an impact on a contending team, when Derrick got to Boston they started winning, just saying. Pay attention to their record before
